Your new favorite winter footwear

Even if you don’t love the winter, you have to admit that there’s something fun about the change of seasons. After all, when the thermostat drops, it’s time to get cozy with warm winter coats, sweaters, socks, slippers, and, of course, winter boots. That said, if you see flurries in the forecast and you’re wondering whether your boots will actually stand up to everything from slushy weather to the next snowpocalypse, it’s probably time to go shopping. But what really qualifies as the best snow boots for women, and how do you know that the ones you like are as good as they claim to be? We’re about to make things a lot simpler for you.

How to shop for snow boots

According to Jennie Flaming, chief adventure officer at the travel website Ordinary Adventures and a former Alaska and Washington State tour guide, the most important thing to consider when shopping for winter boots is whether you’ll wear them in predominantly wet or dry snow. (Refresher: Wet snow occurs when the temperature goes just above freezing, and dry snow occurs when the temperature drops below freezing.) In wet snow, you’ll want to prioritize a boot’s waterproofing, and in dry snow, you’ll want to prioritize its warmth.

Of course, when you’re dealing with snow, you always want something that’s waterproof, at least at the bottom of the boot. That’s true even in dry and cold climates, says Flaming. She also notes that boots should come at least to the mid-calf to prevent snow from spilling inside and should have a sole with tread to resist slipping.

The last thing to remember is socks. “Socks are just as important as boots to stay warm and dry,” says Flaming. She recommends wool socks from Smartwool and Darn Tough.

How we chose the best snow boots

In addition to getting recommendations from Flaming, we scoured thousands of online reviews to find the best women’s snow boots—whether you need them for trekking in deep snow or simply getting from the car to your front door safely. Each of the options on this list has an average rating of four stars or higher on Amazon, as well as a minimum of 500 reviews. Non-Amazon boots, including our favorite winter boots from Zappos, come highly recommended from a range of sources or are routinely considered best in class. One final note: Don’t delay! With supply chain issues and increased demand for everything these days, the best boots will likely sell out a lot sooner this year.

The best snow boots for women

OK, now let’s get shopping! Here are 2022’s best snow boots that will keep your toes toasty, no matter how awful the weather is. Know a guy in need of proper footwear, too? Check out these top-rated winter boots for men.

Kiwi Suede And Nubuck Care Kit Ecomm Via Amazon
via amazon.com

How should you clean suede boots?

Different materials require different care, but perhaps none is as tricky as suede. The finicky material can become stiff and brittle when it dries after becoming wet, which is why you might not want to wear suede boots in deep snow. Full suede boots are better for short distances in light snow, or you can opt for snow boots with suede accents. If they do get drenched, it’s possible to restore your beloved boots to their former glory. George P. H., founder of Shoethority, recommends a five-step process…once your boots are dry. “Always wait for [suede] to dry first,” he says.

Once it is, follow these steps:

  1. Use a suede brush to remove debris and dirt.
  2. Apply suede cleaner or saddle soap to a microfiber cloth or shoe brush.
  3. Work the cleaner into the suede using circular motions until clean.
  4. Rinse with a clean towel or microfiber cloth.
  5. Let dry fully.

He also recommends preempting damage by applying a suede protector or all-purpose leather protector that is safe for suede.

Adirondack 3 Hiker Ecomm Via Ugg
via ugg.com

How should you clean UGG boots?

Because the exterior is made of sheepskin suede, the Classic UGG boot—in all of its shapes and silhouettes—is notorious for getting dirty quickly. However, it’s one of our favorite snow boots for short distances, which is why we’re glad this can be prevented. “I strongly suggest applying suede protector or a good waterproofing spray before wearing UGGs out,” says P. H. “They’re very delicate. They can start shriveling up and losing their shape if exposed to the elements.”

If your suede UGGs are exposed, you can clean them using the same process that you would for any other suede boots, though P. H. does prefer a particular cleaner for them. “With UGGs, I specifically recommend suede cleaner, not saddle soap,” he says. “It does a better job.”

The good news: UGGs’ more technical styles—like the Adirondack III Hiker and the Classic Clear Mini—hold up to the elements well. You should be able to spot-clean them with a damp cloth to remove snow and salt stains.

Saphir Medaille Leather Cleaner Ecomm Via Walmart

How should you clean leather boots?

The best way to keep leather boots clean is to protect them from the start. “Use a tried-and-tested protectant spray formulated without silicones on new, clean shoes to help repel minor stains, spills, and splashes,” says Tamar Miller, founder of Bells & Becks, an online provider of Italian-made shoes. “Make sure you use a spray that is recommended for fine leathers in particular and follow the instructions carefully.”

If your boots get a few dirt or salt marks, you can wipe them down easily. To do so, dip a cloth into warm water and dish soap. Then, gently wipe the stain. “If a deeper clean is required or if you’re dealing with wet stains,” says Miller, “I’d recommend considering a professional for high-end suede and leather shoes.”
