200+ Cute Girl Cat Names for Your Purr-ty Princess

These girl cat names are simply purr-fect

Welcoming a new feline family member is an exciting time, and one way to involve the whole family is through name selection. As with boy cat names, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to girl cat names—so much so that, sometimes, it can be hard to agree. There’s an art to picking monikers, and given you’re potentially going to be using the pet name for 15 or more years, you want to get it right.

Certified animal behaviorist Janet Cutler, PhD, explains that naming a cat is an important step in forming a bond with them. “It allows us to see them as individuals, with their own distinct personalities,” she says.

But if you’re struggling to come up with a short list of the best names for your furry friend, we have some expert-approved tips to help you out. We’ve also compiled more than 200 suggestions, including cute, unique, color-coordinated and funny cat names for inspiration.

What are the best girl cat names?

There isn’t a definitive list of the best names for girl cats. A lot comes down to your preferences and possibly your kitty’s personality and appearance. For example, some work well for small cat breeds and others for orange cat breeds.

While independent cats might not be as quick to respond to their names as dogs, Cutler says they “can tell the difference between their name and other words that are the same length and have similar accents as their own name.”

You probably don’t want to go with a name that’s overly long, too similar to other pets in your home or difficult to pronounce. A better option? Cutler explains that studies show cats can discriminate between different vowel sounds. So a name with long vowel sound endings (like Sophie or Lucy) might be a winner, especially if you have multiple pets.

Whatever you pick, be sure to take steps that’ll help your cat recognize its name and increase the chances of it responding. It’s all about repetition and positive associations with food, play or attention. “Ideally, you want to start close to them and say their name and give them a treat,” Cutler says. “Over time, you can gradually move farther away.”

And try not to let your cat’s name be something it associates with unpleasantness or punishment. That can happen if cats are constantly “called away from something they like doing or [are] called by their name so they can be placed in their carrier,” Cutler says.

Cute girl cat names

Choose a cute pet name if looking at your kitty makes your heart melt. And if you really want to catch your pet’s attention, adopt a mushy, high-pitched tone whenever you use a cutesy name. “Cats can recognize speech directed toward a cat from speech directed toward another adult,” Cutler says. “However, they seem to only do this with people familiar to them, so it may be individual pitches and tones from familiar people that are important.”
