200+ Funny Cat Names That Are Absolutely Hiss-terical

Looking for funny cat names? One of these feline aliases will be paws-itively purrfect for your furry pal.

So your family has a fabulous new feline, and “Here, kitty!” just doesn’t cut it. Sure, there are plenty of great pet names out there to choose from, but to avoid your cat’s name becoming a cat-astrophe, you need to choose one that’s utterly purrfect. And for some people, that means only one thing: a funny cat name. People sometimes think cats don’t have a sense of humor, but cat owners everywhere know that’s just not true (especially if they’ve ever introduced their cat to a cucumber). If you’ve ever surprised your cat mid-lick and caught them with a hilarious kitty expression, you’ve got a feline who deserves to be crowned with one of the best funny cat names.

We’ve sorted our favorite funny names for cats by category, so whether you’re looking for a name inspired by your cat’s personality, inspiring historical figures or your favorite meal, you’ll be able to find a moniker that paw-sitively fits a boy cat or a girl cat. Here are the best names for comedic kitties.

What should you keep in mind about funny cat names?

Before we get to the list, though, there are a few things to consider when giving your kitty a funny moniker. For starters, a sense of humor is a very individual thing, which makes choosing a funny cat name a bit of a minefield, particularly if your sense of humor runs on the edgy or dark side. Just ask cat behavior consultant Joey Lusvardi, who’s the proud owner of a fluffy ball of serotonin named Zoloft. But beyond your personal preferences, here’s what else you should think about.

Don’t make it too long

“Funny names may be amusing to say, but they can also be incredibly impractical,” says Lusvardi. “If you name your cat Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, it’s going to be really hard to get that name out every single time you need to use it.” Translation: You can have an “official” name that’s long and hilarious, but shorter is better when you’re actually using it with your cat.

“A shorter, simpler name that is made up of only one or two syllables is easier for the cat to understand than one that has a more complex structure,” Lusvardi says. “Personally, I’m a big fan of cats named after foods and cats with human names. One of my favorite cats is named Mitch, and it’s just such a perfect name for him.”

Keep it clean

Lusvardi also recommends against giving your cat a name that’s rude or potentially offensive. “While it may seem funny, it’s going to predispose you to thinking of your cat in a negative light,” he explains. If you have any doubts, think about shouting that “hilarious” moniker across your neighborhood (or in the waiting room at the vet). If you wouldn’t want your grandma to hear it, it’s probably not the best cat name. Luckily, you can’t go wrong with the funny cat names on this list!
