The dreamiest Cabo all-inclusive resorts

Why is Cabo San Lucas so amazing? Lets start with its stunning beaches, beautiful blue seas, sunny weather, striking rock formations and abundance of bars, restaurants and entertainment offerings. And if youre on or near the West Coast, its a no-brainer, since this Mexican hot spot on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula is just a three-hour plane ride from major cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Denver. Oh, and did we mention the vast array of dreamy Cabo all-inclusive resorts? Well, we should have! Not only do they look like they belong on a postcard, but since everythings included in your rate, they will make budgeting and planning incredibly easy.

So, have we officially convinced you to book your next trip to Cabo? If the answer’s yes, then you’ll want to keep reading to find our top picks for the destination’s best all-inclusive resorts!

What’s the best time to go to Cabo?

Cabo has year-round warm and sunny weather, which means there’s not really a “bad” time to visit. High season is generally between November and April, which also overlaps with prime whale-watching season (early December through mid-April). That said, keep in mind that this is also when Cabo will be more crowed and costly.

Low season, July through mid-October, brings fewer crowds but also the hottest temps and the rainiest weather. That said, you’ll also find lower hotel rates, which may be a draw for those on a budget. Shoulder season (May through June, and mid-October through November) serves as a happy medium, with fewer crowds and great weather.

How we chose the best all-inclusive resorts in Cabo

We sifted through hundreds of TripAdvisor reviews and consulted with travel pros to bring you the best of the best. The accommodations we chose all have private balconies or terraces, and most also have all-suite accommodations with amenities like bathtubs and water views. We also looked for resorts with bonus features, such as included non-motorized water sports, free spa access and state-of-the-art kids clubs, to name a few.

Just keep in mind that while all the best Cabo resorts on this list are located along gorgeous swaths of sand, not all of the beaches are swimmable. Unlike other warm-weather vacation destinations such as the Caribbean, which have warm, calm waters, some Cabo beaches have rough, strong currents. With this in mind, only some of these resorts are situated on swimmable beaches, but most are just a short walk or drive away from other excellent swimmable beaches.

Now, without further ado, scroll on down to see the 10 best Cabo all-inclusive resorts. And don’t forget to check out these all-inclusive resort tipsso that you can make the most of your trip!

We’ve all been sucked into tourist traps at some point during our travels. It usually happens by accident, of course, and with the best intentions. Maybe your uncle recommended it as a “must-visit” attraction. Or you’d seen countless photos of a famous destination and felt like youhadto see it in person. All too often, though, these spots end up not being the highlight of our trips: The tourist-heavy restaurant doesn’t have very good food, or a popular destination has long lines, endless visitors and inflated prices.

Of course, the key to avoiding tourist traps is knowing what they are in the first place, and two new studies can help with that. Vacation-rental and property-management company Casago and USA Today Blueprint each identified some of the most overhyped and overrated destinations so you can enjoy every part of your next vacation.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletter for more news, humor, cleaning, travel, tech and fun facts all week long.

How did these studies identify the biggest tourist traps?

Two different studies, two different methodologies. And before we get to the details, we should note that they looked at tourist traps around the world, but we’re focusing on the United States for this article.

The first study, from Casago, relied on tourist feedback from TripAdvisor. Its analysts searched for the number of times the words tourist trap were mentioned in a TripAdvisor review of a particular sight. They also made sure that each destination had at least five of these mentions and that the phrase “not a tourist trap” didn’t count toward this number. It’s also worth noting that four of the biggest tourist traps in the world are located in the United States, according to Casago’s analysis.

The July 2023 USA Today Blueprint study, on the other hand, was based on 23.2 million Google reviews for the world’s 500 most popular tourist attractions, which spanned 65 countries. This analysis took into account the frequency of words including tourist trap, overrated and expensive, and measured the relative frequency of those mentions compared with the total number of reviews for a particular attraction.

What are the worst tourist traps in the United States?

The two studies by Casago and USA Today Blueprint each produced different results, though one hot spot does appear on both lists. (More on that later, but how’s that for a dubious distinction?) And the “winners” are …

Fisherman’s Wharf

Famous Pier 39 with sea lions, San Francisco, USA

Casago’s study identified Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco as the biggest tourist trap in the United Statesand the world. Its analysis found 1,049 Trip Advisor reviews with the words tourist trap for the California city’s iconic waterfront business district that sees around 12 million visitors annually.

To be fair, there are some cool things to see here, such as sea lions sunbathing near the shores of the San Francisco Bay and two cable car lines to ride. But you can get that California-coastline experience elsewhere in San Fran, and the “world-class dining, shopping, hotels and endless entertainment opportunities” touted by the city’s tourism board aren’t quite what they’re cracked up to be, according to TripAdvisor reviewers. The issue? If you’re looking for an authentic San Francisco experienceand one without overpriced tourist trinketsyou probably won’t find it here, according to Steve from North Carolina. Another reviewer, Bert, called it a “mini Vegas” for its many mediocre restaurants and T-shirt shops.

Still feel like you need to visit Fisherman’s Wharf? By all means, stop by, says San Franciscobased travel agent Andrey Zakharenko … but then quickly move on to another site. “If you want to go to Alcatraz, it does depart from Pier 39, so you’re close to the Fisherman’s Wharf area,” he points out. “And just a little to the left of it, you’ve got Ghirardelli Square in Fort Mason, where there are more local vendors and more interesting places to visit.”

Four Corners Monument

Four Corners Monument Marking the Corner of Four States

The Four Corners Monumentlocated right at the intersection of Arizona, Colorado, Utah and New Mexicotopped USA Today‘s list. Situated in Navajo Tribal Park, it certainly has some intrigue, since it’s the only place in the United States where four states meet. If you’re on a quest to visit every state in the country, you can stand right on the spot and check off four!

But it’s hours from other big vacation destinations, so between that and its $8-per-person entry fee, many tourists didn’t feel it was worth the effort or expense. “It’s been on my bucket list since I was a kid,” Loana Grado acknowledged in a Google Review, adding she was glad she visited but that it “wasn’t a big whoop.” She adds: “I’d do it once in your lifetime, and that’s enough.”

Reviewer Joel Kermis likewise called it “a fun spot to visit if you’re already in the area … but it has little additional value beyond the novelty of being in four states at the same time.” Translation: It’s a great quick stop on a road trip or a possible must-see if you’re a geography nut, but it probably shouldn’t be your sole destination.

Other top tourist traps

So, what else should you avoid? Here are the other spots that rounded out Casago’s top 10 for the U.S. portion of its list:

  • Dole Plantation (a historic pineapple plantation in Wahiawa, Hawaii)
  • Times Square in New York City
  • Caf Du Monde in New Orleans
  • Navy Pier in Chicago
  • Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas
  • Hyman’s Seafood in Charleston, South Carolina
  • San Antonio River Walk in San Antonio, Texas
  • Cannery Row, a waterfront district in Monterey, California
  • The Hollywood Walk of Fame in California

Meanwhile, USA Today‘s analysis called out these popular destinations:

  • The Salem Witch Museum in Salem, Massachusetts
  • Calico Ghost Town in San Bernardino, California
  • Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer County, South Dakota
  • International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico
  • Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon
  • Pike Place Market in Seattle
  • Navy Pier in Chicago
  • Preservation Hall in New Orleans

Should you visit anyway?

Maybe. After all, you might really want to get a photo at Chicago’s Navy Pierwhich was, by the way, the only attraction that appeared in both Casago and USA Today‘s top 10. You also might want a beignet and a cup of coffee from Caf Du Monde in New Orleans. (Those beignets really are delicious!) It’s just that you should adjust your expectations and plan your visit strategically.

Zakharenko frequently works with clients who want to experience local culture when visiting a new place but might also want to throw in a popular tourist spot or two along the way. “If they want to see the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and stuff like that, then I say, ‘Let’s see if there’s a better date to do it when it may be less crowded,'” he says.

After all, planning a trip with a mix of photo-worthy spots and cool hidden gems can often make for the best trip. It all boils down to what you’re looking for. “It’s always good to ask why you’re doing it,” Zakharenko says. “Is it because someone told you or because you’re actually interested in the destination?”

You might be surprised by the lesser-known trending seaside town.

Summer vacation season may be in the rearview mirror, but there are still plenty of great reasons to travel. In fact, fall is an ideal time to plan a trip. The crowds tend to be smaller (at airports and popular vacation spots), the weather is still warm in many parts of the United States, and you miss peak-season pricing, depending on your destination.

Whether you’re considering a short weekend getaway for fall foliage or a weeklong family vacation to sunny shores, the fall season is one of the best to hit the roador the skies. The question is, where should you visit this fall? Lucky for travelers, Trip Advisor recently compiled a list of the top trending destinations for fall travel in 2023. Get ready to book!

How were the top trending destinations determined?

This is not a list of the mostpopular destinationsthose are what you’d expect: Las Vegas, New York City and Orlando. On the contrary, Trip Advisor wanted to identify the top trending destinations for fall 2023, lesser-known or surprising places people seem to be booking this year.

To do that, analysts gathered site data for travel between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30 and identified the places seeing the biggest booking growth, year-over-year. And there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of the town seeing the biggest spike in interest for autumnal travel.

What is the top trending vacation destination this fall?

Little Torch Key, Florida, is the top-trending destination, according to TripAdvisor’s report. As the name suggests, it’s one of the Florida Keysthe chain of islands in the Gulf of Mexico just south of Florida’s mainland.

Located along the iconic Route 1 highway connecting the keys, Little Torch Key is located near the larger Big Pine Key, and near Middle Torch Key and Ramrod Key. If you want to drive, it’s about 133 miles (about a two-hour-and-43-minute trek) from Miami International Airport. It’s a much shorter 35-minute drive from the southernmost (and perhaps best-known) key, Key West.

What does a vacation in Little Torch Key, Florida, look like?

Once you get to the island, you’ll find that it’s a fairly small residential and beach community. At around three miles from one end to the opposite, you could drive from the northernmost point to the southernmost on-road point in around seven minutes.

Wondering where to stay? Don’t bother searching for major hotel chainsit’s not a heavily commercialized island. However, you will find some smaller, boutique resorts, such as Parmer’s Resort or the Little Palm Island Resort and Spa, which describes itself as a tranquil paradise among white-sand beaches. You can also look for some beach house rentals on the island.

It’s not far from a great snorkeling site at one of the biggest coral barrier reefs in the world, Looe Key Reef. It’s also very casual when it comes to your dining options. Instead of well-known chains, you’ll find places like Kiki’s Sandbar and Grill, a waterfront dive featuring fresh seafood, nightly live music and the option to dine at tables on the sand.

Is it safe to visit the Florida Keys in the fall?

As you might expect, perhaps the biggest obstacle for visiting the Florida Keys in autumn is hurricanes. After all, Atlantic hurricane season technically stretches from June 1 to Nov. 30. The local government in Little Torch Key does caution: Hurricanes can hit anywhere in the keys or Florida, with the most active part of the season falling between mid-August and mid-October.

For that reason, if you’re planning an early autumn (or even a future, late-summer) trip to Little Torch Key, you may want to consider purchasing a travel insurance policy shortly after booking that will allow you to cancel and get a refund if a major storm develops.

Other popular fall 2023 destinations

Little Torch Key wasn’t the only destination Trip Advisor identified as trending this fall. Other locations seeing strong growth this year compared with last include several areas in Florida, a Pennsylvania lake town and other warm-weather destinations out west. Some of these trending spots are great romantic weekend getaways and might even have domestic all-inclusive resorts.

The list includes:

  • Indian Rocks Beach, Florida
  • Miami Springs, Florida
  • Hawley, Pennsylvania
  • Carefree, Arizona
  • Reno, Nevada
  • Cape Canaveral, Florida
  • Holmes Beach, Florida
  • Rutherford, California
  • Indio, California

Considering a trip this fall? Since these destinations seem to be getting a lot of attention right now, start looking soon, especially if you want to get the best deal for your travels.

New Survey: This Is the No. 1 Cheapest Airport to Fly from in the U.S. https://www.rd.com/article/cheapest-airport/ https://www.rd.com/article/cheapest-airport/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2023 22:29:24 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1858098 Traveling on a budget? There’s nothing more exciting than exploring a new vacation destination, but airfare that costs more than the rest of your trip combined can dampen your enthusiasm. Sure, you could figure out the best time to buy plane tickets for a stellar deal, book a flight on a budget airline or even use something like Southwest’s Companion Pass. But the fact is, airfare prices are on the rise.

Luckily for you, we have one more trick up our sleeves: Consider the airport you fly from. According to a Smart Asset study on airfare increases over the past year, some airports have managed to keep costs lower than others. Before you start planning your next trip, read on to find out which U.S. airports made the list of the cheapest in the country and which ranked as the most expensive.

GetReaders DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel news, humor, cleaning, tech and fun facts all week long.

How was the cheapest airport determined?

Narrowing down the list of airports to find the cheapest in the nation is no small task! Smart Asset sourced data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and zeroed in on the average cost of airfare for flights originating at U.S. airports that saw 100,000 or more passengers during 2022. The researchers then compared data from the first quarter of 2023 with data from the first quarter of 2022 to find out the percentage increase in fares for each airport.

What is the cheapest airport to fly out of in the United States?

At the top of the cheapest-airport listwith an average ticket price of $269.92 in the first quarter of 2023is Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. It’s ranked the 19th busiest airport in the world, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, considering Las Vegas is one of the most frequently visited destinations in the nation.

So why is the airport so cheap? There are more than enough flights to meet the demand, which drives prices down. Flying in and out of Las Vegas is often far more affordable than traveling out of less-popular destinations.

The low prices at Harry Reid International are also the result of so many carriers flying into and out of the airport. All of America’s major airlines use Harry Reid, and the sheer nature of competition makes prices even cheaper.

The top 10 cheapest airports in the United States

Harry Reid International Airport may be the cheapest in the country, but it isn’t the only airport that offers affordable airfare. The following 10 airports all offer pretty great prices, and if you can fly out of any of them, you may be able to save on your next trip. They may even give you the permission you need to finally plan that vacation to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

Here are the top 10 cheapest U.S. airportsand the cost of an average domestic flight in the first quarter of 2023:

  1. Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas: $269.92
  2. Kahului Airport (OGG) in Maui, Hawaii: $271.69
  3. Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Orlando, Florida: $274.08
  4. Metro Oakland International Airport (OAK) in Oakland, California: $275.86
  5. Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in Burbank, California: $285.53
  6. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida: $288.53
  7. San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) in San Jose, California: $306.68
  8. Luis Muoz Marn International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico: $309.74
  9. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) in Chicago: $313.72
  10. LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in Queens, New York: $325.76

The top 10 most expensive airports in the United States

On the other end of the spectrum are the country’s most expensive airports. At the top of the list is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska.

And what makes these so pricey? As with the cheapest airports, it all comes down to supply (of departures) and demand (from passengers). When the demand outpaces the number of available flights, prices increase. When you take these factors, along with location, into consideration, you can begin to predict which airports are likely to be the most expensive. Far fewer people travel through Alaska than they do Las Vegas, which is why you’ll spend almost twice as much on flights out of Anchorage.

Here are the top 10 most expensive U.S. airportsand the cost of an average domestic flight in the first quarter of 2023:

  1. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in Anchorage, Alaska: $508.85
  2. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Dulles, Virginia: $487.49
  3. MinneapolisSt. Paul International Airport (MSP) in St. Paul, Minnesota: $455.65
  4. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in Charlotte, North Carolina: $453.89
  5. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) in Salt Lake City: $448.55
  6. Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport (DTW) in Detroit: $447.64
  7. Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) in Oklahoma City: $431.85
  8. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in DFW Airport, Texas: $430.12
  9. Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) in Grand Rapids, Michigan: $427.97
  10. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) in Norfolk, Virginia: $427.85

Traveling on a budget

We get it: You can’t always control the airport you depart from. If you live near one of the top 10 most expensive airports, you may have no other options nearby when it comes to flights. If that’s the case, you can lower the overall cost of your trip by flying a budget airline like JetBlue, using Southwest’s Companion Pass to travel for free (for real) or focusing on cheap vacation destinations instead.

When it comes to vacation, I’m a “listen to your heart” kind of gal who eschews travel listicles and rarely even uses a guidebook, relying on word of mouth and intuition. So when I saw an AI travel planner and other tools making headlines this year for helping people save money and plan trips, my first instinct was to write them off as hype. I’ve found the whole idea of artificial intelligence more than a little scary, and the last thing I wanted to do was hand over control of one of my favorite activities to what I thought was just a fancy calculator that reads the internet.

The way I saw it, I didn’t need an AI assistant to tell me how to travel. And the prospect of ChatGPT advice was about as appealing as letting ChatGPT create my grocery list. In other words: unappealing.

But when I heard that an AI travel planner or other travel tool could save me money? I’ll admit that my ears pricked up. You could say that travel has been a lifelong obsession of mine, and since my pocketbook has never matched my ambitions, traveling on a budget has become an equally big obsession. When I was studying abroad in Europe in my early 20s, budget airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair were emerging, so I was one of those people who would sleep in a random European airport to take dirt-cheap flights if it meant saving a bit of cash.

It just so happens that I have a very expensive trip looming in my near future: a transatlantic voyage to New York City for a 10-day stay. So I decided to see whether the latest online travel tools could scratch my cheapskate’s itch for deals, anda big step for meI even put my fears aside and took an AI travel planner (or seven) for a test drive.

GetReaders DigestsRead Up newsletter for more tech tips, travel, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

How to save on flights

I decided to take the plunge right away and try out Microsoft’s Bing, an AI chatbot that runs on ChatGPT-4 technology. It’s free as part of the Microsoft Edge browser, whereas ChatGPT-4 requires payment. (Google Bard is another free option, though it runs on different technology.) And unlike the free version of ChatGPT, Bing has access to the internet.

I asked it to find me the cheapest flights between my country (all major airports are within a few hours of me) and New York City for a range of departure and arrival dates. And I was stunned: Bing claimed it had found a round-trip flight for just $380.

Maybe I had been wrong about AI all along?

Unfortunately, while Bing gave me a link to the aforementioned flight, when I clicked, it showed up as $947. I even asked Bing for the flight numbers and airlines so I could try the airline websites directly, but to no availthe actual price was still $947.

While the smart bot had let me down, I knew that the dumb ones had my back. I’m talking about flight search engines: Instead of opening 70 browser windows and manually searching for my flights on different airlines, I relied on tech to do that for mefast. These sites’ bots query zillions of airlines and display the results in a way that’s easy to navigate.

After testing out Kiwi, Expedia, Skyscanner, Momondo, Google Flights and much-hyped Hopper, I went back to my old standby: ITA Matrix, which you may not have heard of. Developed by an MIT AI researcher in the early 2000s, it was the original flight search engine.

It’s not as user-friendly as the newer engines, but in my experience, it finds hidden deals. This time, while the other flight search engines threw me flights of $700 or more and encouraged me to buy now, as flights weren’t likely to go down, ITA Matrix found a real cheapskate’s flight: $570 round trip, departing from a nearby city (a $5 train ride from me). Searching on my own through major carrier websites turned up flights of $1,100 or $1,300.

Total saved

I saved a whopping $530, paying $570 instead of $1,100 for my flight.

How to save on hotels

These Simple Online Travel Tools Helped Me Save $911 On My Vacation Getty Images Hotel

Even breathing can feel expensive in New York City, so I was extremely skeptical about AI’s ability to find me cheap places to stay for a week in the Big Apple. A quick check on Booking.com turned up $672 for a room with a shared bathroom in a hotel with a 3.8 rating, or $851 for 10 nights in a hostel rated 8.3that’s $85 a night for a bed in a room with 10 other people, folks.

I asked Bing to find 10 hotels that cost less than $100 a night. It helpfully provided a list, but it also turned up several articles from niche blogs that answered the same question. I went down the rabbit hole, but much like my experience with the flights, the information turned out to be wrong, perhaps because it’s outdatedsome decent-looking hotels that were promised to cost less than $100 a night ended up costing $250 or even $400 when I checked their websites. Google’s Bard gave me different options, but they were just as inaccurate ($300 a night instead of the promised $100).

Back to my old friends the bots and some hotel search engines. WayAway (more on that below) somehow found me the same hostel bed for $65 a nighta total of $250 in savings. I’ll take it.

Total saved

I saved $250 using WayAway, paying $65 a night instead of $85 a night for 10 nights.

How to save on sightseeing

To plan a cheapskate’s getaway in New York City, I turned to Expedia’s ChatGPT-powered AI assistant to come up with some free activities to do during my trip. AI trip planners ride on ChatGPT’s technology; trained on large pools of text, ChatGPT has learned how to parse natural-sounding sentences for what the user wants to know. Then it gathers and summarizes information accordingly.

I was impressed by Expedia’s ability to plan a seven-day itinerary, and as someone who has lived in New York City, I can vouch for the quality of its suggestions. It suggested some NYC hidden gems and even came up with free museums I wouldn’t have thought of.

It wasn’t 100% accurate, however; while it correctly stated that the Brooklyn Museum allows you to pay what you wish (including nothing, if you want), it erroneously claimed the Whitney Museum and Metropolitan Museum of the Art offered the same option. (The Met changed its policy in 2018.) I liked the fact that when it suggested the Tenement Museum, an attraction I haven’t visited, it was easy to ask how much the tours cost and then ask for a different suggestion. When prodded for more free museums, it gave me information on specific days and times when the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum are free.

Bing’s AI chatbot didn’t create as detailed an itinerary (it presented a bullet-point list rather than a narrative) and erroneously said the Bronx Zoo is a pay-what-you-wish facility (it’s free on Wednesdays, according to the website). But I liked that it also pulled up a few real, researched itineraries from niche blogs across the web that I probably wouldn’t have found on my own.

Switching back over to Expedia’s AI assistant, I was impressed by how easily it generated a list of 14 budget restaurants in New York City that covered a variety of ethnic foodsit also gave me five cheap Japanese restaurants when I prodded it for more. And it gave me several options for finding Broadway tickets and flagged some free street festivals during my trip.

Total saved

While it’s hard to calculate exactly how much I would have spent without AI’s help, let’s assume the intel might have saved me 50% on a Broadway ticket ($60), along with the $16 I would’ve spent on a Brooklyn Museum ticket, $30 on a Whitney Museum ticket and $25 on a Museum of Modern Art ticket. Overall, I’m spending $60 instead of $191so my AI travel planner trio of sites saved me $131.

In this case, the savings are really in time: I could have probably gotten all this information myself if I’d set aside a few hours, but it took me only a few minutes to compile all the information, thanks to AI.

My grand-total savings

Using AI and other platforms to plan my New York City vacation, I saved a grand total of $911. But I’m less impressed by AI than I wanted to betrue AI contributed only $131 in savings. The remaining $780 in savings came from booking sites.

The future of AI may be bright, but for now, AI chatbots are less helpful when it comes to landing deals than their less-intelligent counterparts.

Travel-planning tools

Eager to try out AI and other online travel tools for yourself? Use the tips below as you approach each part of the trip.

Tools for finding flights

These Simple Online Travel Tools Helped Me Save $911 On My Vacation Getty Images Flight

AI chatbots are good for general research about flights, while flight search engines should be your go-to when it’s time to buy. Read on for more.

Bing Chat and Bard

Find them: Bing Chat is free with Microsoft Edge, and Bard is free with a Google sign-in.

Pros:

Con:

  • They don’t seem to give accurate real-time information.

Flight search engines

The sites below are some of my go-to’s, but Skyscanner, Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Momondo and Hopperwhich additionally uses past data to predict future faresare all similar tools. (Bonus: Many of them offer a useful flight price tracker feature as well.) My advice is to take your time and try all of them to find the best deal.

ITA Matrix

Find it: ITA Matrix is free online.

Pros:

  • It allows for extreme flexibility with departure and arrival cities, and some flexibility with travel dates.
  • It seems to find hidden deals.

Cons:

  • You can’t book the flight directly from the website. When you find the itinerary you want, plug those dates and cities into Google Flights or visit the airline’s website.
  • It’s more labor-intensive to change the window of travel dates.
Google Flights

Find it: Google Flights is free online.

Pros:

  • You can pick your departure city and a time range, then look at how much it will cost to fly to different destinations on a map.
  • If you’re looking to fly to a specific destination, after your search you can easily scan through more dates around your desired departure date.

Con:

  • It may not find a lower fare that would show up on ITA Matrix.
Kiwi

Find it: Kiwi is free online.

Pros:

  • It offers extreme flexibility on dates.
  • The tool can shuffle two destinations to find which order gives you the cheapest itinerary.
  • It can show you deals from your city in a given month.

Con:

  • It may not find deals that turn up on ITA Matrix.

Tools for booking hotels

In general, use AI chatbots to research the cheapest season for your chosen destination, then use the following hotel search engines to find the best hotel deals for specific dates.

Expedia

Find it: Expedia is free online.

Pros:

  • It looks across platforms, including Vrbo, a site similar to Airbnb that allows people to rent out their homes.
  • The mobile app version has an AI assistant that can recommend hotels to suit your specifications.

Con:

  • It may not give the cheapest options, and the hotels recommended by the chatbot may not be as cheap as suggested.

WayAway

Find it: WayAway is free online.

Pro:

  • WayAway searches multiple reservation sitesin my case, it turned up a lower price than Booking.com for the same hotel on the same dates.

Con:

  • It doesn’t search for other types of stays, like homestays.

Bing Chat

Find it: Bing Chat is free with Microsoft Edge.

Pro:

  • It allows you to do general research on the cheapest months to visit a given destination. For instance, you can ask it for the cheapest time to visit Hawaii if you don’t have set dates in mind.

Con:

  • Price information for specific hotels seems to be inaccurate.

Bard

Find it: Bard is free with a Google sign-in.

Pro:

  • Bard gives different answers than Bing, so you can get a second opinion by using two AI travel planners.

Con:

  • As was the case with Bing, the price information wasn’t accurate at all.

Tools for planning activities

These Simple Online Travel Tools Helped Me Save $911 On My Vacation Sightseeing

There are many AI tools out there for creating travel itineraries; if you search your phone’s store for travel apps, you’ll find both professional and homegrown models. It’s still early days, but here are the ones I’ve tried so far.

Expedia’s AI assistant

Find it: The Expedia app is available for free.

Pros:

  • It easily whips up suggestions for budget restaurants and activities of different types.
  • You can easily tweak the itinerary according to your tastes.

Con:

  • It’s not 100% accurate.

Bing Chat

Find it: Bing Chat is free with Microsoft Edge.

Pro:

  • Bing provides answers, as well as sources and articles for additional information.

Cons:

  • It’s not 100% accurate.
  • It offers less-detailed responses.

Trip Planner AI

Find it: Trip Planner AI offers a limited free version or a pro paid version for $7.99 a month.

Pros:

  • It shows the cost of attractions.
  • You don’t have to bother with writing prompts.

Cons:

  • The free version doesn’t let you specify your tastes or budget.
  • It didn’t catch the fact that some museums are pay-what-you-wish places.

Wanderbot

Find it: Wanderbot is free online.

Pros:

  • It allows you to make changes to the itinerary via the chat.
  • You can book activities directly.
  • It provides a map with the activities already marked.

Con:

  • It appeared to be buggythe activity descriptions didn’t always match the titles.

Iplan.ai

Find it: Iplan.ai is free online.

Pros:

  • There’s no need to write prompts.
  • You can select your interests and budget.
  • The itineraries are organized by day and come with photos, maps and suggested times.
  • You can decide which hours you’re available each day.

Cons:

  • The itinerary doesn’t make sense geographically, sending you from one side of the city to the other.
  • It sent me to the same restaurant for every meal (I chose the budget option).

How to use online travel tools to save money

What did I learn from my high-tech travel plunge? That technology has changedand improved!since I was a college student hopping around Europe and spending more than the occasional night on the cold, hard floor of an airport.

As hesitant as I was to use AI to plan my trip, the tech really shone when it came to asking for recommendations about cheap and free activities. I liked the ability to probe options, reject them and explore additional possibilities as I began to collect information.

For example, asking about cheap Broadway tickets got me onto the topic of free staged readings, which is a terrific way to experience the New York theater scene. It was also easy to ask for prices or more detailed information about specific attractions, although, as is the case with everything ChatGPT does, I had to check its work manually. While the experience with the Expedia app’s AI assistant seemed to be more seamlessand it saves the information about activities in one convenient placeI liked that Bing pulled up relevant articles from niche publications that I could check out later if I felt like learning more.

Also, I tested these tools on a trip for which the destination and dates weren’t flexible. It seems to me that I would have saved more if I’d used AI to research the cheapest destinations and dates and then dreamed up my trip from there. Of course, when buying flights or booking hotels for specific dates, I would still switch over to more traditional (but still powerful) flight and hotel search engines.

And cheapskate that I am, I’ll admit that I’m tempted to begin my next vacation by firing up an AI chat assistant and typing, “Where’s the cheapest place to visit right now?”

What’s the first thing to do when you step in a hotel room? Test out the mattress? Raid the minibar? Peep the view? Check your hotel room for intruders or other hotel safety issues? Maybe you set your brand-new luggage set on the bed and start unpacking. Or maybe you put your suitcase in the bathtub. That’s right, the bathtub! But why would you put your luggage in the hotel bathroom, you ask?

There’s actually a really gross reason. Here’s what the experts say.

Get Readers Digests Read Up newsletter for travel, humor, cleaning, tech and fun facts all week long.

Why should you put your luggage in the bathtub?

There’s a very good (and pretty gross) reason not to toss your luggage on the hotel bedeverand instead put your suitcase in the bathroom, and that’s because of bed bugs. Whether you’re staying at a 5-star hotel or a budget motel, the threat of bed bugs is real. And because they are well-known for hitching rides to your next fabulous destination, putting your luggage in the bathroom before inspecting the room for bed bugs ensures those pesky insects stay far away from your clothes.

“When I worked in the hospitality industry, I learned that more hotels have bed bug problems than you might think,” says travel writer and consultant Marla Cimini. Her research-backed hack? “Upon entering your hotel room for the first time, it’s always a good idea to place your bag in the bathroom.”

Once your luggage is away from the bed, she says, check for bed bugs. “Check the bed and mattress by pulling out the sheets from the corners and sides and see if there’s any evidence of bugs. It’s also smart to check the drawers and headboard. It only takes a few minutesand it’s always good for peace of mind,” says Cimini.

Katelyn Kesheimer, an entomologist with Auburn University, agrees. She stashes her luggage in the bathroom while she does a thorough bed bug check of the entire room. “Once I know it is clear, I bring my luggage out into the main room, but I never put it on the bed, just in case.”

Why is a bathroom a safe place for luggage?

Why put luggage in the hotel bathroom? “A bathroom is the least likely place that bed bugs will be found in a hotel room due to the short amount of time that humans (the bed bugs’ source of food) spend in the bathroom relative to the rest of the room,” says Kesheimer.

Additionally, bathrooms do not offer great hiding places for bed bugs, compared with the rest of the hotel room. “Bed bugs also prefer more natural surfaces, and tubs and tiles do not provide this. Plus, towels and bathmats are removed and cleaned between guests, so any potential hiding places are constantly in flux.”

Are hotel closets and dressers safe from bed bugs?

“Bed bugs hang out near beds or other areas where humans spend a lot of time,” says Kesheimer. They spend their time where they can hide effectively and where they can have access to their next blood mealseriously, we told you it was gross.

They prefer dark, flat hiding places until they’re ready to come out to feed, typically between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. In the meantime, they like to hide out “behind a headboard, behind a picture on the wall, underneath the mattress and within the folds and creases of the mattress,” Kesheimer says. Beds are the main area we think of, but couches and accent chairs are other good examples. “These are the areas where we are sedentary for long periods of time that also provide a nearby hiding spot for the bed bugs.”

Your hotel room’s closets and dressers are only safe to use once you’ve thoroughly inspected the bedding and mattress and found no signs of bed bug infestation (which, by the way, is worse in these U.S. cities). And while the bed remains off-limits for luggage, there are some safe spaces to unpack, including the luggage rack.

How do I know if my luggage has bed bugs?

Because bed bugs are so great at hiding, “they can easily hitchhike a ride in your suitcase on the inside of the zipper or underneath a tag without being noticed,” says Kesheimer. Use the flashlight on your phone to inspect your luggage before you pack it up to leave the room. Pay attention to creases and folds within the luggage, along the zipper, underneath any tags and in other flat, concealed areas. Travel with large garbage bags in the event that you do encounter bed bugs on your trip. “This will allow you to enclose any potentially infested luggage or items and avoid further spread until you get home and have a chance to eradicate them,” she says.

How do I keep bed bugs out of my luggageand home?

In addition toputting luggage in the hotel bathroom until you’ve done a thorough inspection for bed bugs, Kesheimer says to avoid setting suitcases on the couch or armchair, and to avoid keeping clothes on the bed, couches or other upholstered surfaces altogether.

Once you’re at home, unpack immediately. Bed bugs will hide in clothing until they’re ready to come out looking for a meal. They like heat and carbon dioxide, two elements that humans generate. Either or both of these, says Kesheimer, “may trigger a bed bug to come out of a suitcase looking for a blood meal.”

If clothes are not cleaned when getting home, they can infest the next location they end up, says Kesheimerand that could be your entire closet. “High heat kills bed bugs,” she says, “so I always recommend throwing everything in the dryer for 45 minutes on high if you think your items may be infested.”

And as if you weren’t repulsed enough already, know that bed bugs are resilient little buggers that can live a very, very long time. “They can go months to over a year without a blood meal, so if left in a suitcase or on clothing, they can certainly survive and infest later on when there is access to food,” says Kesheimer. With that unnerving perspective, putting your suitcase in the hotel bathroom sounds like a pretty smart idea.

The Best Time to Visit New Orleans, According to a Frequent Visitor https://www.rd.com/article/best-time-to-visit-new-orleans/ https://www.rd.com/article/best-time-to-visit-new-orleans/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2023 22:58:21 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1856659 You can let the good times roll any time of the year in the Big Easy, but there is a “best” time to visit New Orleans.

The post The Best Time to Visit New Orleans, According to a Frequent Visitor appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
It’s easy to see why New Orleans consistently ranks as one of the top cities in the United States to visit. From beignets around the clock and rollicking live music to voodoo tours and street cars, plus food and music festivals and multi-month Mardi Gras celebrations, there’s always something cool happening here. I’ve visited the Big Easy nearly a dozen times, in every season, and I always find something new to amaze my taste buds and delight my eyes. But with so much going on, it can feel daunting to figure out the best time to visit New Orleans.

“New Orleans is a four-season destination,” says Walt Leger III, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company, the city’s tourism board. “And the best time to visit really depends on what you’re interested in, because we truly have something for everyone.”

Personally, I prefer the more temperate weather in the winter and the festivals that fill the early and late spring … but I can certainly appreciate the great deals being offered during the summer months too. So whether you’re heading on a quick trip or a longer vacation, here’s everything you need to know about which season to choose for your perfect vacation in New Orleans.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel, tech, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

What are the best months to visit New Orleans?

Unlike many other popular vacation destinations where the best weather may be limited to a few months, awesome weather in New Orleans stretches through three seasons! You’ll find pleasant skies and moderate temperatures from October through May. To get more specific, in the winter, you’ll need a light jacket for evenings that dip into the 50s, but otherwise, you’ll be treated to temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s until things start to heat up in May.

This period is also when most special events take place in New Orleansand when the city’s iconic festivals are in full swing. Here’s a handy cheat sheet:

  • LUNA Fte, a winter lights festival, takes place at the beginning of December.
  • Carnival season starts on Jan. 6 in 2024 and culminates in an over-the-top, colorful Mardi Gras blowout on Feb. 13.
  • JazzFest, a multi-day, multi-stage music extravaganza, will be held April 26 to May 5, 2024.
  • Spring break is also a great time to visit New Orleans.

But as much as I love the Big Easy, it’s a bit easier to enjoy the city when the weather isn’t humid, hot and sticky. Translation: The summer months can be pretty brutal, so this may not be the best time to visit New Orleans if you hate the heat. From June through September, temperatures soar to the 90s, and humidity levels can reach 79%. August and September are also peak hurricane season here, so proceed with caution during that two-month stretch.

Colorful homes and historic architecture in New Orleans, Louisiana

What time of year is New Orleans cheapest?

If you can handle the heat, summer is the best time to get a deal in New Orleans. “August is generally when you can get the most value for your money in terms of lodging, as well as dining and cultural activities,” says Leger. “August also brings us COOLinary and Museum Month, where visitors can take advantage of dining deals and all-access passes to many NOLA museums.”

Another good time to get a deal is the quieter shoulder season of late fall, which is also the best time to book a flight. In addition, many hotels offer “Papa Noel” discounted rates during the winter holiday season, from Thanksgiving through New Year’s. I’ve visited for the latter, and I can tell you that in addition to great weather and good prices, New Year’s is (probably unsurprisingly) a fun, all-day party in the Big Easycomplete with a fleur-de-lis “ball” drop in Jackson Square and fireworks.

What time of year is the best weather in New Orleans?

Unlike many vacation destinations in resort locations, where the peak season is either winter or summer, New Orleans really shines in the spring and fall. Spring is one of the prettiest times to visit, and in March and April, temperatures average from the low 60s to the upper 70s. Flowers are blooming, but there are occasional showers.

Fall’s crisp air and dropping temperatures make it a beloved season in New Orleans as well. In early September, temperatures remain in the upper 80s, but they begin to drop for the rest of the season. You can expect temperatures from the upper 70s to the mid-50s from October through November.

When is New Orleans the least crowded?

August through mid-September is best time to visit New Orleans if you don’t want to fight the crowds. Why? “Because there’s no getting around itsummer in the South is warm,” notes New Orleans & Company. However, that means fewer crowds and more value for your money, as well as easier access to restaurants and cultural attractions.

One highlight you’ll want to check out, especially when it’s hot outside, is the newly reopened Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium. “Plan to spend the day there, wandering through the natural habitats for sharks, rays, a cool white gator named Chompatoulous and a giant sea turtle named King Midas,” says Jody Rohlena, executive editor of Reader’s Digest, who recently visited. “And don’t skip the Insectariumit’s not at all creepy.” Rohlena also recommends the cafe, where bug treats like cricket king cake are on the menu.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA downtown cityscape with and trollies.

How many days in New Orleans is enough?

The number of days you spend in New Orleans depends on what you want to experience while you’re in town. Want to stay mostly near the French Quarter, eating and drinking your way through the town and listening to live music? Three to four days will provide ample time. Add another day if you want to leave the downtown area for a swamp tour or a trip to City Park, where you’ll find the New Orleans Botanical Gardens and the New Orleans Museum of Art. If you’ve got kids in tow, you’ll definitely want to leave another afternoon free to visit the Aquarium and Insectarium.

On a recent family trip this past January with my husband and teen son, I spent three nights in NOLA. Here’s a snapshot of our itinerary:

  • We spent the first afternoon exploring the French Quarter, with a mandatory stop for piping-hot beignets at Caf du Monde, the best coffee shop in the state, then looped around Jackson Square. At night, we took in a live concert (good for all ages) at Preservation Hall for some quintessential New Orleans jazz.
  • Sunday morning centered around a jazz brunch at Arnaud’s in the French Quarterand an indulgent three-course meal that included gumbo, grits and even flaming crpes Suzette! In the afternoon, we hopped on a tour bus for a trip to the bayou to see alligators (my hotel, the Eliza Jane, helped us plan our adventure). Then we had yet another amazing meal, this time in the hip Warehouse District.
  • Finally, on our last day, we took a ride on a classic streetcar to visit the Garden District, with a stop at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Rohlena covered similar ground to my trip when she visited this past spring, including beignets and jazz, but she spent a day at City Park and the Aquarium and Insectarium instead of going on a swamp tour. If you’d like to do all these activities, plan on a four-night trip. For special events such as Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras, extend another day or two so you can enjoy the festivities and also see the best of the city.

Places to stay in New Orleans

Now that you know the best time to visit New Orleans, you need the perfect place to stay. From swanky luxury properties in the French Quarter to independent boutiques in the Garden District, there’s a hotel in New Orleans to fit every personality. Rohlena stayed at the centrally located, wonderfully comfortable The Westin New Orleans, which has panoramic views from its waterfront perch on the Mississippi River, as well as special perks including an elevator margarita cart on hot days. (Yes, please!)

On my most recent visit, I was immersed in history at The Eliza Jane, the former home of The Daily Picayune newspaper. It’s now a swanky hotel with a fabulous lobby bar, Print, and it’s just a block from the French Quarter.

Or you can check into one of our favorite value hotels, The Quarter House. It’s loaded with inclusive extras, such as a private Jacuzzi tub in all rooms, a pool, complimentary live jazz breakfast every Sunday and a Mardi Gras celebration every Tuesday with wine, NOLA cuisine and more music. And yep, all those perks are 100% gratis. The only issue? You’re never going to want to leave!

The Best Time to Visit Scotland for Better Weather and Stargazing https://www.rd.com/article/best-time-to-visit-scotland/ https://www.rd.com/article/best-time-to-visit-scotland/#respond Mon, 28 Aug 2023 21:44:56 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1855362 From island-hopping and hiking to stargazing and Northern Lights hunting, here's info on the best time to visit Scotland, depending on what you want to do.

The post The Best Time to Visit Scotland for Better Weather and Stargazing appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
The best time to visit Scotland is right now. Seriously. No matter the month, no matter the year, Scotland is calling, and you should answer.

This past June and July, I was lucky enough to spend an entire month in Scotland. I cruised around its remote islands, hiked 96 miles through the rugged Highlands, visited countless historical sites and castles, and explored large and small cities by foot, bicycle and tram. Scotland immediately became one of my favorite countries in the world, and I’m already planning my return.

While some travelers add a short trip to Scotland onto a larger trip to London (which is quite easy to do), doing so means you’ll only see the tip of the proverbial Scottish iceberg. There is so much to see, do, eat and drink here that Scotland definitely deserves its own visit. Though Scotland is about the size of South Carolina, you’d think it’s as large as Alaska when it comes to its varied geography. From farm-flung islands surrounded by sea stacks to castles perched atop dramatic cliffs to rugged mountain wilderness and modern metropolis cities, you’ll find a bit of everything.

So stop drooling over those wanderlust-inducing photos of Scotland and plan a trip so you can see all those sights in person. Whether you’re hunting for cheap places to travel while visiting the UK or plan to splurge on a fancy castle stay, we have information on the best time to visit Scotland, what to know before you go and how to plan your trip.

GetReaders DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel tips, humor, cleaning, tech and fun facts all week long.

What are the best months to go to Scotland?

Technically, there is no best time of year to visit Scotland because “the best” time depends entirely on what you want to do. Do you want to attend festivals and concerts? Shop at the Christmas market? Explore castles and historical ruins? Stargaze? Marvel at the Northern Lights? There is something amazing to do every month, so your goals will determine the best time to visit Scotland.

Because I wanted to take a small-ship cruise to hard-to-reach Scottish islands and hike the world-famous West Highland Way, I visited during late June and early July.(I highly recommend Adventure Canadas Scotland Slowly cruise and Wilderness Scotlands trek.)

Scotland receives the most visitors between July and September, which offer warm weather and lots of activities. Keep in mind that different parts of the country receive different amounts of tourists, so no matter when you visit far-flung places like the Shetland Islands, you’ll encounter fewer people than you’ll find in Edinburgh.

And speaking of that famous Scottish city, Edinburgh is especially popular in late July and August because it hosts many popular music, theater, food and cultural festivals. Prices will be higher, and the crowds will be thicker (this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe sold more than a million tickets). But the entertainment options are endless.

If you’d rather avoid crowds, skip the summer. And there’s another good reason to do that: You’ll have the best chance of avoiding the notorious Scottish midge, a teensy two-winged fly that’ll swarm you and make you wish you’d brought a netted hat. Peak midge season occurs from mid-May to September, and the swarms are worse at dusk and dawn.

What time of year is the cheapest to visit Scotland?

If saving money matters most to you, the best time of year to visit Scotland is between January and March. Because relatively few visitors plan their trips during these months, this tends to be the best time to book a flight to the country. To save even more money, consider the best time to book a hotel room to get the most for your money.

The shoulder seasons are April to May and October to December. That said, Scotland is well known for its Christmas markets and New Year celebrations, so to avoid higher prices, plan your trip before mid-December or wait until mid-January.

What are the rainy months in Scotland?

The short answer is that every month is a rainy month in Scotland. After all, Scotland is part of the UK, which is famous for its gray skies, fog and rain. For many travelers, the best time to visit Scotland is during its drier summer months. In general, January is the rainiest month (averaging 19 days of rain), with October and November close behind (averaging 18 rainy days). Compare that with April through June, which averages 13 days of rain.

But the weather is never predictable, so you can end up with sunshine or rain any time of year. I encountered nonstop sunshine and unseasonably high temperatures during the first 12 days of my trip to Scotland.

Keep in mind that despite the rain, there are plenty of things to do in Scotland every month, and the rain is often brief. Western Scotland is wetter than Eastern Scotland, and while I saw more days of sustained rain in the Highlands, most of the showers I encountered in Edinburgh and Glasgow lasted fewer than 10 minutes.

I noticed that many locals carried umbrellas with them, which they put to use on outdoor patios while continuing to enjoy their beer, coffee and food. Most hotels I stayed in provided umbrellas, but you might as well add the item to your vacation packing list. As for me, I brought a waterproof jacket and shoes, which is what I typically relied on.

When can you see the Northern Lights in Scotland?

Northern Lights in Scotland

Fancy seeing one of the seven natural wonders of the world while you’re in the country? You’re in luck.

Northern Scotland lies at the same latitude as Stavanger, Norway, and Nunivak Island, Alaska, meaning you’ll have a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights if you visit. The best time to visit Scotland to catch the Northern Lights would be between November and February, which have the longest periods of darkness and the highest frequency of clear nightsboth of which are required. That said, because part of Scotland is so far north, you can get some good views starting in late September.

Though it’s possible to occasionally catch the aurora borealis in the capital city, Edinburgh, your best chance of viewing the Northern Lights in Scotland will be in more remote and wilderness regions.

Stargazing in Scotland is excellent, as the country has some of Europe’s largest expanses of dark sky and is home to Europe’s second Dark Sky Park. It’s also home to many Dark Sky Discovery Sites, which experience low or practically nonexistent levels of light pollution, leaving ink-black skies filled with dazzling stars.

The Isle of Skye and its northerly Trotternish Peninsula have a whopping nine Dark Sky Discovery Sites, making this one of the best places in Scotland for stargazing and seeing the Northern Lights.

How many days are enough to visit Scotland?

The further you travel and the more regions you want to visit, the longer you’ll want your trip to be. I flew directly from New York City to Edinburgh, which is only a seven-hour flight, so I got off the plane, took a bus to Glasgow and spent several hours walking around the city before crashing and sleeping off my jet lag.

If you’re traveling on a plane from Los Angeles or Seattle, however, you’ll be looking at 13 to 15 hours of flight time. Not only do you have farther to fly from the West Coast, but you also have to factor in the time it takes for layovers, which can be even longer if you stop in another country and have to go through customs.

In 2022, the average visitor spent 9.2 days in Scotland, a respectable amount of time for a trip but still only enough time to see a very small slice of the country. I may be biased, since Scotland is one of my favorite countries, but I spent a month here, and it was nowhere near enough time. When planning your trip to Scotland, remember that though it is a relatively small country, it is extraordinarily diverse in terms of geography, sites and attractions, so this is not somewhere to rush through.

Getting around Scotland

Once you’ve determined the best time to visit Scotland based on your interests and trip goals, it’s time to start planning your vacation. The first thing to know is that it’s extremely easy to get around the country and view all its hidden gems, so don’t be afraid to stray away from the largest cities and most popular attractions.

Affordable bus, train and ferry options can move you around within and between cities and across the entire country. They are typically much cheaper, more accessible and easier to understand and use than public transportation options in the United States.

Traveling by rail

Scotland’s railway, ScotRail, is one of the best ways to get around the country, as it’s fast, safe, clean and affordable, and it connects large cities and tiny towns alike. It travels to popular places like Inverness, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fort William, where you can catch the Jacobite steam train that crosses the Glenfinnan viaduct (made famous by the Harry Potter films). To give you an example of how affordable this is if you’re traveling on a budget: I paid about $18 for a round-trip train ticket from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and the scenic ride took about 45 minutes.

Trains accept credit cards, but you typically must purchase tickets from the station’s ticketing machines (or information desk) before boarding to avoid a fee. While you can purchase train tickets in advance, you can also buy them when you arrive at the station. For instance, I had a pre-booked ticket for my 2.5-hour train ride from Edinburgh to Inverness, but I also purchased train tickets on the spot in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Traveling by bus

Buses are another great option and, like trains, you can pay using your credit card. (Pro tip: Get a credit card with travel rewards and save even more.) The main difference is that you typically pay for trains before boarding (otherwise, you may incur a fee), while with buses, you pay after boarding.

In Inverness, I popped into the centrally located bus station. I learned that I could take a public bus to the historic Culloden Battlefield (which was only seven miles away) instead of having to sign up for a more expensive tour to take me there. The staff told me which bus to take and gave me a schedule so I knew when I could catch a bus back to downtown Inverness.

Traveling by car

Renting a car is also an optionI drove myself from Aberdeen to Glasgow, making several stops over a few days. But if you go this route, remember that the British drive on the other side of the road.

Instead, relax in comfort and style—with free food and drinks—at the best airport lounges.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You arrive at the airport only to discover that your flight has been delayed, and you now have multiple hours to fill in an overcrowded terminal before you can board your flight. I’ve had this happen more times than I care to count. After an especially excruciating delay trying to fly from Newark to Puerto Rico with my young son in tow (where we spent hours sitting on the floor because all the seats were filled), I finally took the plunge into the world of airline lounges. That was more than a decade ago, and I’m here to tell you that the best airline lounges are anairport’s best-kept secrets, and theyll make you feel like you’ve gotten aflight upgrade.

The best lounges I’ve visited have made-to-order food, sleeping areas and showersand one even had a champagne bar! But even the least memorable provided some basic free amenities and food, not to mention a more private spot than the food court or the flight gate. And this comes in handy not only when youre delayed or have a long layover but also when you just want to have a more pleasant airport experience.

So how do you access these magical sites? By knowing some strategic air-travel tips, including using the best travel credit cards. And here’s the big secret: You might already be entitled to access. Heres what you need to know.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel tips, tech, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

What are airport lounges, anyway?

At their core, the best airport lounges are a respite from the busy airport terminal, a kind of private living room away from the hustle and bustle of the airport. “Some lounges are barely more than a quiet space with a bowl of pretzels, but some are an oasis in which to escape from an airport’s many announcements,” says Ryan Smith, a senior editor at AwardWallet, a service that helps you track any type of loyalty account and manage your travel plans. Common amenities, he adds, include free Wi-Fi, drinks and light bites.

There are three types of lounges: those operated by the airlines, those affiliated with specific credit cards and those that operate on an individual membership basis. The perks you’ll get at airport lounges also vary by city, country and airport. In small regional airports (especially those that don’t have international service), you may not find any lounges at all.

What types of perks will you find at an airport lounge?

Miami International Airport, American Airlines business class Flagship lounge

Aside from a quiet place to chill before your flight, food is a big draw, but as mentioned, the type and quality varies. I’ve been to United lounges in the United States that are only “grab and go,” meaning you can bring food on the plane (think: packaged cheese and crackers, cookies and cans of soda or bottled water). My favorite airport lounge, though, was Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong. It had a dumpling bar and made-to-order noodle bowls that were among the best I’ve eaten anywhere.

And food isn’t all you can expect. “Some lounges will have showers, separate areas for sleeping or for children, and even sit-down meals,” says Smith. “In order to know what you’ll find at various lounges so you can choose from your available options, look for photos online from recent visitors. These will tell the full story of what the lounge has or what it lacks.”

Another excellent, under-the-radar benefit? If you’re visiting an airline lounge, you’ll have front-of-the-line access to airline help-desk personal, who maintain a separate desk in the lounge only for those passengers with club access. This is a priceless perk when dealing with delays, canceled flights or missed connections.

Why should you care about airport-lounge access?

OK, let’s address the elephant in the room: From the outside looking in, airport lounges seem a lot like elitist waiting rooms, yet another pay-for-play amenity at the airport. However, let’s say you’re in the middle of long-haul travellike, New York to Nairobi with a multi-hour layover in Frankfurt. At an airport lounge, you’ll have a place to sit down and close your eyes without worrying about your bag’s safety (one of the perks I truly appreciate). You might also have a spot to shower or lay down, since some lounges have rooms where you can take an uninterrupted nap.

You can see how those benefits would be totally worth it in that sort of travel situation. But even if you’re flying domestic, being able to grab a meal and charge your electronics while sitting in a comfy chair and having a glass of wineall gratiscan go a long way toward soothing a tense trip.

“I love visiting the Capital One Lounge at DFW (Dallas Fort Worth),” says Senitra Horbrook, who covers how to get lounge access at her Points Travelher Instagram (and is often my first source of info about credit card travel perks). “The lounge not only has a stylish designit also has extensive amenities such as a relaxation room, cycling and yoga room, and food stations with convenient individual portions available.”

How can you get into the world’s best airport lounges?

Miami International Airport, American Airlines business class Flagship lounge

There are multiple ways to get access to the best airport lounges and clubs, and you may be surprised at how many of them don’t involve paying for individual visits. Some are as easy as having the right credit card in your wallet, having elite frequent-flier status or flying in a premium-class seat on an international flight.

Even if you don’t have any of these, you can enter some lounges for about $35 a visit (for example, with Priority Pass, as you’ll see below), or purchase a pass for multiple visits, which brings down the cost. Scan the list below for the method that best suits you and your travel plans.

Use a credit card with travel perks

Airport-lounge access is one of the most popular travel credit card benefits, according to WalletHub. And you may already have this perk as part of your credit card’s benefits and not realize it, especially if you have a credit card from your employer. Some travel credit cards have an airline allegiance, and they may provide anywhere from two free lounge passes (for example, the United Explorer card, which has an annual fee of $95) to unlimited access to the branded clubs for a year (the United Infinite Card, with an annual fee of $525).

You can also apply for a card that gives you access to a range of lounges. The American Express Platinum Card was the original, high-end travel credit card. Today, it will get you into any Priority Pass network lounge, any Delta Skyclub (as long as you hold a Delta ticket) and American Express’s own branded clubs (Centurion Lounges), which often offer free spa treatments, wine tasting and other premium amenities. Note that for this level of access, the annual fee is $695, but you’ll also receive other perks, including large travel credits for hundreds of dollars.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is Horbrook’s pick. The annual fee of $395 is less than the others in this category, and not only can you visit Capital One lounges, she says, but “you can also access more than 1,000 other lounges worldwide via the membership in Priority Pass this credit card provides.”

Buy premium international tickets

Most airlines have branded lounges in their hub airports and in airports where they have extended flights. (Note that budget airlines don’t have lounges.) These are available to passengers flying business class or first class. However, it’s important to note that most airlines require you to be flying in a premium cabin internationallynot just, say, from Dallas to Chicagoto get lounge access, says Smith.

Earn elite status on an airline carrier

If you fly United or one of the two dozen other Star Alliance airlines (these include international carriers such as Lufthansa, Singapore and Turkish Air) and have Gold frequent-flier status or higher, you can access any of the nearly 1,000 Star Alliance lounges around the world. This is the best free perk I’ve enjoyed with my elite United status, which I earned simply by flying (OK, by flying a lot) and not by paying any additional fees. With this perk, I’ve enjoyed a buffet of treats at airports in Athens, Frankfurt and even South Africa, thanks to my status, and I haven’t paid an extra dime.

Have active military status

If you’re a current member of the United States armed services, you are eligible for free USO lounge access. These special lounges can be found across the United States and are available to U.S. Armed Forces active duty, Reserve and Guard service members; family members of these active military-service personal are welcome in the lounges too. The lounges are staffed by volunteers and usually offer free Wi-Fi, snacks and comfy seats.

Purchase a membership

Don’t have airline status, aren’t flying in a premium seat internationally and don’t want to pay for a travel credit card? Don’t worrythere are still ways to get into the best airport lounges without paying a bundle.

Priority Pass allows you to pay for a membership, then pay for individual visits to one of their more than 1,000 lounges and clubs around the globe. The cheapest membership costs $99 per year, and then you’ll pay $32 per visit. The most expensive membership costs $429 per year and includes unlimited visits. (Compare this with having Priority Pass as part of a credit card such as Capital One Venture X, and you’ll start to see why it’s valuable to have a travel credit card).

Finally, you can find lounge access through Plaza Premium Lounges. This site will let you book a single visit through its website starting at about $40 a visit, and it offers access to a large array of lounges around the world, instead of having its own clubs. There’s no membership required, so if you’re in the midst of an airport meltdown and need somewhere to relax, this could give you instant travel serenity for about the price of a checked piece of luggage.

Next, learn how to fly for free, according to frequent travelers.

There are two types of travelers: Those who arrive at the airport early (the recommend two or three hours prior to the flight time) and those who casually stroll in as the plane is boarding. If you recognize yourself as the first type, wait times may not often be an issue for you. But if you hope to breeze through security, chances are you’ve come close to missing your flight due to long wait times.

While early arrivals help to avoid the stress of travel and navigating security lines, all airports are not created equal. Some have a reputation for zipping passengers through security in under five minutes, while others are just considered slow. Which U.S. airports have earned the title of the country’s worst for security wait times? We’ve got the info.

The 10 worst airports for security wait times

The airport control tower at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan with a weather front moving in behind it.

According to a comprehensive report by Planet Ware, an online source for travel guides, these 10 airports have the longest average security wait times, so plan ahead if you’re departing from these destinations.

  1. Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City, Michigan, 28.10 minutes
  2. Palm Springs International Airport, Palm Springs, California, 26.70 minutes
  3. Lihue Airport, Lihue, Hawaii, 23.60 minutes
  4. Monterey Peninsula Regional Airport, Monterey, California, 23.40 minutes

The 10 busiest airports with the longest security wait times

Hawaiian airlines airplane being fueled and loaded for the next flight at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

Some airports are more likely to be visited than others, so Planet Ware also narrowed down the list of the longest wait times to the airports with the most passengers on average each year. These are the busiest airports with the longest average wait times.

  1. Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, O’ahu, Hawaii, 20.5 minutes
  2. O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, 19.5 minutes
  3. Midway International Airport, Chicago, 18.4 minutes
  4. George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, 17.1 minutes
  5. Tampa International Airport, Tampa Bay, Florida, 17.1 minutes
  6. San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco, 16.4 minutes
  7. Washington Dulles International Airport, Dulles, Virginia, 16.3 minutes
  8. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta, 14.5 minutes
  9. Orlando International Airport, Orlando, Florida, 14.5 minutes
  10. Logan International Airport, Boston, 13.2 minutes

How were the longest security wait times determined?

The website’s travel experts collected data from more than 150 airports across the country. They gathered data each day for one week during the busiest time, which happens to be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. From there, they ranked the airports from the longest to shortest wait times.

Tips for getting through security faster

Airplane passengers line up for TSA security screenings at Denver International Airport in Denver, Colorado.

No matter which airport is the starting point for your next trip, getting through security can be a hassle. Here are a handful of tips that will help you zip through the line quickly, so there’s no need to rush to your gate.

Sign up for Clear, TSA Precheck or Global Entry

Depending on where you plan to travel, any combination of Clear, TSA Precheck or Global Entry may help you save quite a bit of time when getting through security. A Clear membership is a faster identification process that allows you to skip to the front of the line. TSA Precheck provides an expedited screening program for flights originating in the United States. And Global Entry gives prescreened, low-risk travelers the opportunity to pass through U.S. Customs and Border Protection faster when returning to the U.S. from an international flight.

Know the TSA liquid limit

If you plan to pack your toiletries in your carry-on, it’s important to know about the TSA liquid limit and exceptions, as well as TSA food rules. For instance, liquids under 3.4 ounces are permitted in carry-on luggage; larger liquids must be packed in a checked bag or they will be confiscated by TSA agents.

Book the first flight of the day

The earlier your flight departs, the less likely there is to be an overcrowded security line. If you book the first flight of the day, you are bound to zip through security quickly, and you’re far less likely to experience flight delays.

Pack carry-on luggage properly

It’s not just larger liquids that can’t go in your carry-on. Familiarize yourself with the TSA’s carry-on rules in advance of your flight and pack accordingly. If you need to pack items that are not permitted in a carry-on, arrive at the airport early in order to check your bag.

Make sure your license or passport is up-to-date

TSA agents are responsible for verifying your identity before allowing you through security, which means you’ll need an up-to-date license or passport. If you arrive at the airport with expired identification, you are likely to spend far more time navigating security, and in some cases you may not be permitted to board your flight at all.

Here’s How Many Miles You Can Drive After the Gas Light Comes On https://www.rd.com/article/drive-on-empty-chart/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 10:00:00 +0000 http://www.rd.com/?p=298688 Driving with the gas light on can be dangerous—for you and your vehicle. Here's how many miles you can actually drive on empty.

The post Here’s How Many Miles You Can Drive After the Gas Light Comes On appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
We’ve all driven a bit too long after the gas light comes on, overestimating our gas mileage and pushing our tank to the limit. Whether you were trying to beat rush hour orsave money on gasby waiting to fill up, it can be a panic-filled moment looking for the nearest gas station. But just how many miles can you safely drive after the gas light comes on? The exact number will depend on several factors, including the make and model of your car, your driving habits, regular gas mileage and whether you drive afuel-efficient car, says Kyle MacDonald, vice president of marketing at Force by Mojio, a GPS fleet tracking app for small businesses. You’re not going to get as far, for instance, in a sports car driven aggressively than you will in a compact car driven carefully.

But here’s the good news: You have more wiggle room than you think. While knowing how to find cheap gas, utilizing the best gas appsand best gas credit cards, and understanding how to get better gas mileage can help you avoid running on empty, you can still learn a thing or two about driving with your gas light on and preventing any damage to your engine. Here’s how many miles you should be driving with the gas light on.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletterfor more travel, tech, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

How far can you drive after the gas light comes on?

There’s not a standard number of miles you can drive when the gas light comes on, says automotive electrician and road safety expert Robert Muoz. “Typically, it will light up when the tank is below 10% to 15% of its capacity.” In general, after the gas light comes on, Muoz says it’s safe to drive about 20 to 30 miles in a smaller vehicle or up to 50 miles in a larger vehicle.

Does a car’s make or model affect how many miles you can drive after the gas light comes on?

Yes, the type of car you have makes a big difference. A car with a 10-gallon gas tank might have one gallon remaining when the light comes on. A Ram 1500 truck, however, will have around three to four gallons of gas left. Consider each car’s mpg: If a small city car with a 10-gallon gas tank gets about 40 mpg, it could probably make it 40 miles to the next gas station. Meanwhile, a Ram 1500, which gets around 30 mpg on the highway, could make it as far as 100 miles after the gas light comes on. Typically, when the gas light goes on, about two to four gallons are left in the tank.

Does vehicle age, condition and road condition impact how far you can drive after the gas light comes on?

The short answer is yes, according to Muoz. A car’s age and condition will have an impact, as will road conditions. For example, winter driving mistakes could put you in danger. Cold weather significantly reduces a vehicle’s fuel economy, and if your gas light comes on when it is extremely cold, you should get to a gas station quickly.

A poorly maintained vehicle that hasn’t received regular oil changes or scheduled maintenance will get a lower mpg, and therefore, it will run out of gas sooner when on empty. On the other hand, if a vehicle has been well maintained, its age shouldn’t impact fuel economy, so you should be able to stick with the general estimates.

What happens when the gas light comes on?

Your car is running low on fuel, and soon, its engine will die, says Margarette Stine, an automotive expert for 4 Wheel Online. While this may sound scary, driving a few miles to the nearest gas station is not likely to damage your car. However, the fuel pump needs gasoline to lubricate the engine. “If there’s no gasoline,” Stine explains, “the engine will overheat and eventually seize up.” Wondering if you’re damaging your car in other ways? These are the top carmistakes mechanics would never make.

Is it bad to drive with the gas light on?

“Driving too long and too often with a tank that is almost empty will stress your fuel pump more than usual wear and tear,” says MacDonald. “And once the fuel pump goes, a car is useless until it’s replaced.”

Over time, you risk a clogged fuel filter as your car begins pulling dirt and debris through its engine. You also risk a damaged fuel pump and even engine misfires, warns Muoz. In an emergency, it is OK to drive a few miles with the gas light on, every once in a while, but generally, Muoz believes the risk to your vehicle (and yourself if an accident were to occur) simply isn’t worth it.

Can driving with the gas light on damage your car?

Fuel tanks aren’t perfectly clean environments, says Muoz, and driving after the gas light comes on can move the debris through your engine. Why is this a problem? It can clog up your vehicle’s components, damage your air filter and harm your fuel pump. Additionally, he says, when your engine isn’t provided the fuel it needs to run properly, “you can expect it to start misfiring when the tank is really low. A bad misfire can damage your engine or even cause an accident while you’re driving.”

What should you do if the gas light comes on?

Stine says there are a few things you can do to minimize potential damage. First, as you look for a gas station, avoid driving at high speeds to prevent the engine from overheating. Second, turn off any unnecessary electronics in your car, including the radio, air conditioning and heated or cooled seats. These kinds of electronics don’t use gas, but they can put a strain on your vehicle’s battery, which will shorten the amount of time you have before the engine dies.

If you find yourself with the gas light on and no gas stations nearby, pull over safely and call for helpyou can’t know for sure how many miles you have before the car dies. “You may be able to make it to the next town or gas station,” Stine says (especially if you’re driving the top road trip car or using recommended road trip apps). “However, it’s always best to err on the side of caution, because driving with the gas light on is not advisable and can cause damage to your car.”

How can you stay safe on the road?

If you follow road safety tips, you should be able to drive without damaging your car or putting your own safety at risk after the gas light comes on. However, if driving on empty is common for you, consider investing in a roadside assistance plan, such as AAA, to help in the event of an emergency or if you run out of gas. Of course, the best course of action is to always have enough gas in your tank in the first place. Heading on a long road trip? Start with a full tank of gas and calculate your gas costs. And if you want to stay extra safe on the road, these are the car gadgets that make driving safer.

Does driving with the gas light on save money?

Filling up your gas tank less frequently does not mean you’re saving money, says Muoz. In fact, the damage being done to your vehicle may end up costing you money. If you’re looking to save a buck, learn how Costco keeps its gas prices so low (and how its gas pumps know when your tank is full). And to keep your money safe at gas stations, be aware of the gas pump skimmer, a scam that could steal your credit card information.

Is it bad to drive on a low battery in an EV?

Running an EV battery flat can not only damage it, says Muoz, but also prevent it from fully recharging in the future. Even in the most eco-friendly cars, a general rule is to prevent the battery from dipping below 20%. When money is tight and gas prices (or EV charging costs) are high, don’t push your vehicle’s fuel tank to the limit.

What are the seven natural wonders of the world?

Riffing on the wonders of the ancient world (more on those below), the Seven Natural Wonders foundation named the seven natural wonders of the world to highlight earth’s most awe-inspiring spots. (The organization got compilation help from CNN when creating the list.) Unlike the ancient wonders, though, these natural wonders still exist, and you can see them in person todaythey’re spread across continents and countries.

The ultimate reason for naming these natural wonders isn’t tourism. It’s the desire to conserve and protect these special places by raising awareness of both their special place in the world and the need for education about the delicate balance of tourism and preservation. The hope is to keep them safe for future generations.

What is the eighth natural wonder of the world?

Unlike the seven natural wonders of the world list, which has been agreed upon by several global organizations and foundations, there is no “official” eighth natural wonder. That doesn’t mean you won’t see many truly worthy natural wonders billed as “the eighth natural wonder,” including Niagara Falls in New York and Canada, Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, Ngorongoro Crater in Kenya and the Pink and White Terraces of New Zealand.

What are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

The concept of the seven wonders is hardly a new one. More than 2,000 years ago, Hellenic travelers and poets in ancient Greece enumerated the world’s seven greatest achievements. Yes, humans have been making “best of” lists for more than two millennia!

These lists date back as far as the fifth century B.C., according to National Geographic, so it might not come as much of a surprise to hear that almost all of them no longer exist, with the exception of one: the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, one of the most breathtaking man-made structures in the world.

These are the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:

  • Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Statue of Zeus
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Temple of Artemis
  • Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
  • Colossus of Rhodes
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria

What are the new seven wonders of the modern world?

In 2001, the New Seven Wonders Foundation created a worldwide poll to name the new seven wonders of the modern world. Mind you, these aren’t “modern” in a 21st-century sense. Some are many hundreds of years old. But you can still visit them, and all are attractions in the modern world.

These are the new seven wonders of the modern world:

  • Machu Picchu (Peru)
  • Chichn Itz (Mexico)
  • Christ the Redeemer (Brazil)
  • Great Wall of China (China)
  • Petra (Jordan)
  • Taj Mahal (India)
  • Colosseum (Italy)

Visit the seven natural wonders of the world

Anyone with a case of wanderlust can visit the seven natural wonders of the world today. I personally have been to two of these incredible places, and I interviewed travelers who’ve visited the other five in person. Their insights underscore the importance of preserving the natural landscape through conservation and education.

Excited to start exploring the world? Read on to find out why these seven spots put the wonder in wonderful.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon - North Rim

Let’s start with the most accessible of the seven natural wonders of the world for anyone based in the United States: Grand Canyon National Park. One of the most popular national parks in the country, with an estimated 5.9 million annual visitors, the Grand Canyon was formed tens of millions of years ago. A series of extraordinary geologic events created deep chasms and massive rock formations, giving it an average depth of 4,000 feet for its entire 277 miles.

“It’s truly awe-inspiring. Because I could drive to the Grand Canyon, I wasn’t quite prepared for how completely breathtaking it was when I arrived,” says Mark Sullivan, a travel writer and editor. “I had driven from Sedona, in the summer, where it was very hot, and the Grand Canyon had trees, shade and a breeze, which made it feel completely different from other spots in the Southwest.”

Something about the way it’s situated makes it seem endless, adds Sullivan, who also told me that he was amazed by how quickly the scenery changed when doing even a short hike around the popular South Rim. “Every time I looked up, there was another view that was unlike anything I had ever seen,” he says. “I was completely captivated.”

Plan a visit: Summer is the busiest time at the Grand Canyon, and July and August are also the hottest months. Try visiting in the shoulder seasonlate spring and early fallwhen you’ll have temperate weather and fewer crowds. For a glamping experience under the stars (don’t worry, there are four-poster beds, indoor plumbing and wood-pellet stoves, so you won’t exactly be roughing it), head just 25 minutes from the South Rim to the luxury tents of Under Canvas Grand Canyon.

Northern Lights

Beautiful Northern Lights aurora borealis borealisgreen Norway nature

Unlike the wonders that are located in a single destination, the aurora borealis (aka the Northern Lights) is a phenomenon that occurs in multiple destinations above the Arctic Circle and occasionally even in spots across the Northern United States. It’s a technicolor light show that definitely creates an argument for winter travel.

I saw the dazzling aurora borealis on a trip up the coast of Norway in February. Yes, it was cold. Very, very cold. And the first time I spotted the lights, just to the north of the Arctic Circle, they were a faint green ghost in the distant sky, not the light show I had imagined. But several days later, farther north and many miles above the Arctic Circle, on the completely frozen Lofoten Islands, snowmobiling in the pitch black and worrying about my contacts freezing to my eyes (did I mention it was cold?), I had a completely different experience.

Everyone in my group turned off their motors and their lights. There was complete darkness, and then I looked up to see dancing helixes of purple and green looping through the cosmos. The inky sky was filled with galaxies of stars, and the entire sky seemed to bend. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And yes, while the glowing Northern Lights ribboned around the velvet darkness, I forgot about how cold I was.

Plan a visit: If you want to see the Northern Lights, you have options: Visit Alaska, Finland, Canada, Iceland or other northern countries. I had an awe-inspiring view of them in Norway, and I’d recommend the trip to anyone.

The northernmost point of Europe, right on the border of Russia, is really, really cold in winter (like 16 degrees in the sun). But it has to be cold for the Snowhotel Kirkenes to welcome visitors to its ice-sculpted rooms. I’ve stayed here, and I didn’t love spending the night on ice. Instead, choose to stay in one of the property’s cozy glass-roofed Gamme Cabins, where you can spot the ethereal vision of the aurora borealis from your bed.

Plan a Visit

Mount Everest

Evening view of Ama Dablam

Towering at 29,000 feet above Tibet, Mount Everest (locally known as Chomolungma, which means “the goddess mother of the world” in Tibetan) is the pinnacle, quite literally, for many mountain climbers and adventure travelers. It’s also dangerous and often fraught with inexperienced climbers who have made a “mess at the top of the world,” according to some sources. But the scenery is beyond compare, even from base camp.

“After many dusty hours in a jeep passing through remote Tibetan villages and over several high passes, we finally arrived at Rongbuk monastery,” recalls Nick Fulford, who has spent the past 20 years leading tour groups around the world. “The views along the way of the Himalayas stretching into the distance have been tantalizing, but now, at the head of the valley, bathed in soft evening sunshine, is what we’ve been waiting for: Chomolungma in all her glory.”

After dismounting at base camp, Fulford walked very slowly up to a viewpoint, breathing heavily in the thin air. “At 5,100 meters, we stop and stare at this stunning mountain as the colors of the setting sun change the mood constantly,” he says. “Not far from here, we were surprised to see a small hill in the moraine, which acts as a memorial for lost climbers. These include legendary explorers such as Mallory and Irvine but also climbers from the current season who made the ultimate sacrifice in order to fulfill their adventurous spirit.”

As Fulford notes, the peak isn’t on everyone’s bucket list, and that’s OK. Just seeing the immensity of the mountain in person is enough. “For me, this was as close as I wished to be to this iconic mountain. This was my summit,” he says. “I feel privileged to have had this moment to enjoy the raw natural beauty whilst appreciating the dangers of such a harsh environment.”

Plan a visit: Climbing Everest is a major undertaking, one that not only takes a great deal of physical stamina and training but also costs anywhere from $10,000 and (way) more to reach the summit with the necessary guides, gear and oxygen. Visiting base camp is less of an undertaking but still requires advanced planning and physical agility. In other words, this isn’t a trip to take lightly. But if you think you’re up for it, there are numerous multiday treks and tours, most of which depart from Kathmandu.

Plan a Visit

Paricutin Volcano

Paricutin Volcano

As the youngest volcano on earth, Paricutin fascinated scientists back in 1943 as they witnessed the birth of a volcano for the first time in this century. This lesser-known of the seven natural wonders of the world is hard to reach and rarely visited by travelers, but it offers an intriguing visit for intrepid explorers willing to venture off the tourist trail in Mexico.

“A visit to this volcano requires a grueling hike or an uncomfortable horse ride from a nearby Purpecha community, and as volcanoes go, it is perhaps a little underwhelming,” says Louise France, a Welsh mountain leader and snowboard instructor who has visited Paricutin several times. “It’s not a particularly large volcano, and there’s no magma to be seen in the depths of the crater. But what makes this site special for me and for many locals lies nestled amongst the lava field at the base of the volcano.”

During its eruption, lava destroyed two nearby towns, leaving a single structure standing: the church of San Juan Parangaricutiro. “From a distance, the church spire can be seen standing incredulously amongst the blackened lava field,” she says. “The seemingly miraculous nature of the building’s survival has resulted in the church becoming a major pilgrimage site.”

She didn’t know that before her first visit, though. Only after arriving did she learn just how important the church is. “Mexicans had traveled far and wide to see this holy site,” she recounts. “I was also very aware that this was not a destination for most Westerners traveling to Mexico, with little to no English being spoken. I felt truly off the beaten path. I was lucky enough to visit Paricutin several times, and I always enjoyed making the exploration to both the church and the volcano itself.”

The short scramble to the crater summit wasn’t too strenuous, she told me, adding that running down the volcano elicited peels of laughter.

Plan a visit: Paricutin is not an easy site to reach, and there is no modern tourism infrastructure in place. While this is wonderful from a preservation perspective, it makes a trip here difficult to plan. The closest international airport is Morelia, a 2.5-hour drive. And as France mentions, there are no roads here, so you’ll need to hire a tour guide and hike or horseback ride to the site.

Plan a Visit

Victoria Falls

Aerial view of famous Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia

Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “Smoke That Thunders” in the local Lozi language, these massive waterfalls are a sight to behold, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit them three times now over the past two decades. More than twice the height of Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls in southeastern Africa (one of the places I most love to visit) straddles the Zambezi River running between Zimbabwe and Zambia and measures in at a whopping 355 feet tall and more than 5,500 feet wide.

I’ve been able to visit in different seasonsspring, summer and winter. I’ve experienced everything from visiting an island in the middle of the river during the December “dry” season (I had a romantic lunch with my husband while hippos wallowed around us and the falls plunged into the river just upstream) to getting drenched with my daughter when the falls were at their pounding apex in June. All of it was spectacular, not just because Victoria Falls is so epically proportioned but also because of the natural world bordering it.

On a small, motorized boat on my June trip, we watched tiny, colorful birds called bee-eaters dash in and out of the muddy river walls as they built nests. After, I joined a ranger for a hike into an adjacent national park, where I watched some of the remaining white rhinos in Zambia peacefully nibble high grass.

On a May trip, a helicopter “flip” (as flights over the falls are terrifyingly called) showed me how vast the watery wonder is, including the secluded natural pool where intrepid visitors can take a dip. On foot, on the wettest visit, droplets drenched my clothes while rainbows filled the misty air, truly giving the waterfalls a magical glow. I can’t wait to return again to see more wonders of Africa’s beautiful “smoking” falls.

Plan a visit: It’s easy to fly into Livingstone International Airport on the Zambian side of the falls, where you’ll be able to reach the majority of lodges and activities offered here. My favorite spot to stay at Victoria Falls is also the property with the best location, the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara.

The luxury property perches right on the Zambezi River, with a cocktail bar set on a deck with views of the mist from the falls on one side and resident gentle zebras resting on the green lawn on the other. Being able to follow an easy walking path to arrive at Victoria Falls from the hotel in just a few minutes may make this the easiest of the seven natural wonders of the world to visit (after you fly to Africa, that is).

Plan a Visit

Great Barrier Reef

Australia. Whitsundays. Great Barrier Reef. Aerial View

This 1,429-mile ecosystem is the largest living thing on the planet and a stunning deep-sea sight. It’s so enormous, astronauts could even see it from outer space. This natural wonder wows with its dazzling array of fish, mollusks, dolphins, sharks and turtles.

Intrepid traveler and AwardWallet editor Ryan Smith visited the storied reef for a honeymoon getaway. “It’s one of the world’s most interesting places, and I’ll never forget scuba diving here on my honeymoon,” he says. “We saw countless fish, beautiful coral and even an octopus that quickly buried itself in the sand to hide. Many people dream of visiting this place, and seeing it up close made it even more magical.”

For other honeymooners, a romantic spot worth seeking out is located in the Great Barrier Reef of the Whitsundays in Australia: The Heart Reef is 55 feet in diameter and one of nature’s best mysteries. The coral formed into the shape of a heart by itself over time and was discovered in 1975 by a pilot. By air is still the best way to visitthe only way to see the heart shape is by plane or helicopter. (It isn’t a surprise that a lot of those flights turn into in-air proposals!)

Plan a visit: You can’t go wrong with a stay at the InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, which is positioned right at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Surrounded by verdant cliffs, white-sand beaches and celestial-blue sea, the resort’s 182 rooms, suites and villas will immerse you in the spectacular scenery of the area and give you easy access to explore the watery wonders here.

Plan a Visit

Harbor of Rio de Janeiro

Sugarloaf Mountain

Almost 5,400 people per square kilometer are packed into urban Rio de Janeiro, the storied city on Brazil’s golden coast, making it one of the most populated places on earth. It’s also one of the most popular travel destinations in South America, due in no small part to its breathtaking harbor, also known as Guanabara Bay. The turquoise bay is surrounded by a stunning beach and framed by granite monolith mountains, including iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statue stands watching the entire city. Just past the harbor, numerous islands dot the water.

“While the beaches might be your first thought [when you picture Rio], my fondest memories of the harbor come from above,” says Smith, who has visited the area multiple times. “The Mirante Dona Marta, or Dona Marta Lookout Point, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood offers spectacular views of the whole harbor, plus Christ the Redeemer. From this height, you can see everything, and that view is what comes to mind when I think of Rio de Janeiro.”

Plan a visit: The Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort sits directly on the beach and offers a tropical resort setting in busy Rio. You’ll have direct access to the sand and surf, plus access to a large pool, landscaped gardens and a range of restaurants and spa experiences to truly make you feel like you’re in a beach oasis.

Here's why.

The post This Is the No. 1 City People Want to Move to in the U.S. appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
If you’ve recently considered moving to an entirely new city, you’re not alone. Ever since the pandemic, many of us have had more flexibility when it comes to where we work and, as a result, where we live. That’s caused millions of people to rethink where they call home, whether they’re looking for the best place to retire or just generally searching for the nicest places in America to settle down, with lower living costs, better job opportunities and higher quality of life.

So, just where are people looking? According to a new study by real-estate site Redfin, one of the most popular places homebuyers are perusing also happens to be one of America’s most popular vacation destinations. Read on to find out what it isand if it could be a good fit for you.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletter for more news, humor, cleaning, travel, tech and fun facts all week long.

How did the study determine the top cities of interest?

To pinpoint which cities were getting the most attention from potential homebuyers, Redfin’s analysts sifted through 2 million web searches between April 2023 and June 2023. The company homed in on members who viewed at least 10 for-sale houses, including at least one outside their current metropolitan area. In other words, it tried to focus on people who seemed to show serious interest in relocating to an entirely new place.

One caveat: The study didn’t track actual home purchases or moves after people showed online interest. And while those potential homebuyers might not actually pack up and head to another city, they are definitely moving-curious and likely to do so.

Which town do people most want to move to in the United States?

A photo of the world famous Las Vegas city skyline

The city that came out on top in Redfin’s study is … Las Vegas. Yes, that Vegashome to the world’s most famous stretch of casinos, resorts, thrill shows, tourist attractions and debauchery. It was the first time Las Vegas ever topped this particular list for Redfin.

Now, there’s a good chance Sin City has never crossed your mind as a place to live and that you’ve instead considered it as a fun weekend getaway. But for a lot of folks, that’s changing.

Why do so many people want to move to Las Vegas?

Tourists know Las Vegas for its bright lights, gaming and star-studded shows. But like a lot of cities, the experience for the locals is far different. “There’s a lot more to Las Vegas than just the Strip,” says realtor Michael Bondi, who’s lived in the area for almost 20 years. “The only time I go down to the Strip as a local is if there’s a concert, a sporting event or a restaurant I want to go to.”

World Population Review recently identified Nevada as one of the nation’s fastest-growing states. Here are some of the top reasons for that.

Affordability

One of the biggest reasons to consider Las Vegas, especially for those in large metropolitan areas: cost of living. Someone who lives in San Francisco and makes $115,000 would need to earn just $62,683 to maintain their standard of living in Las Vegas, we found using a cost-of-living calculator from NerdWallet.

Plus, the home prices here are far more affordable than some of the big West Coast cities where, Redfin found, a lot of the people eyeing Vegas homes currently live. Redfin reports a typical home in the Vegas area costs around $412,000. Compare that with around $975,000 in the Los Angeles area, about $1.4 million in San Francisco and around $826,000 in Seattle.

Also appealing? Nevada doesn’t have state income tax.

Job opportunities

Nevada ranks as one of the nation’s fastest-growing states. Interestingly, at some points this year, the state reported higher unemployment rates than the country as a whole, but there are still a lot of job opportunities in the area. Just think about all the touristy businesses downtown!

The opportunities are only growing too, Bondi points out. Las Vegas recently added a few new professional sports franchises, and it may soon be home to a couple major motion picture studios … which will translate to thousands of new jobs.

“We’ve got so many projects coming here that are going to transform Las Vegas,” Bondi says.

Quality of life

Ultimately, it’s not the Bellagio or the Venetian that Bondi likes having close to his home in the Vegas suburbs. It’s the two Home Depot stores within a five-minute drive, along with the calm traffic. It’s that type of convenient suburban environment that many of his clients from big cities have been searching for. “It takes me 20 minutes to go from one side of town to the other,” he says. “We have traffic, but it’s manageable.”

Plus, there’s the weather: Vegas’s dry desert climate means comfortable temperatures much of the year as long as you can brave the summer heat.

And, of course, if you’re looking for a bit more excitement, you can always venture down to the Strip!

Where else are people looking to move?

Houston, Texas, USA Drone Skyline Aerial Panorama

Las Vegas isn’t the only city getting attention among Americans looking for a new place to live. Redfin’s study also looked at the nine other top cities drawing eyeballs from would-be movers. One thing nearly all of them have in common: They’re located in the Sun Belt, keeping with the recent trend of Americans moving to warm-weather places. (And yep, a few Florida beach towns made their way onto this list.)

Here are the other cities in the top 10:

  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Tampa, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Sacramento, California
  • North Port/Sarasota, Florida
  • Cape Coral, Florida
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Miami, Florida
  • Houston, Texas

The top cities residents are looking to leave, according to Redfin? San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, Seattle, Hartford, Denver and Detroit.

Is now a good time to move?

Of course, any potential homebuyer should be aware that average nationwide mortgage rates in June stood at 6.7%, versus 3% in early 2022. That’s thanks to the Fed raising interest rates at a historic pace to tame inflation. And it means your monthly mortgage payments could be higher if you do choose to move.

Bondi notes this has actually kept home inventory low in the Las Vegas region. So if you want to move there or to another in-demand city, it’s a good idea to start your search early. “If you’re thinking of relocating within the next year, you need to start looking now,” he says. “It’s getting to be a really competitive market.”

About the expert

  • Michael Bondi has been a full-time realtor in the greater Las Vegas area for 19 years. He holds a Certified Residential Specialist designation and works with clients in Las Vegas and its surrounding suburbs of Summerlin and Henderson.

Dont make these hotel etiquette mistakes

Hotel workers deal with a lot of people every day and a lot of personalities. It’s definitely not an easy job! You, as a kind and reasonable human being, understand this, so you do your best to be polite. Of course, you know that certainetiquette rulesapply here, but you may not realize that some “polite habits” aren’t quite as polite as you might think. In fact, these things could actually be getting in the way of hotel workers doing their jobs and providing you with the best service possible. (And sometimes those habits are just really annoying!)

“Kindness is everything, and it really does make a huge difference to us, so I never want to discourage people from doing their best to be nice,” says Ken F., a hotel concierge at a four-star hotel in Manhattan who says he’s seeneverythingin his 18 years behind the front desk. “But there are definitely some things that, while we know are meant to be nice, we’d really rather you don’t do. So if you really want to know, I’ll be brutally honest!”

Oh, we want to know everything, Ken!

To help you avoid making these all-too-commonetiquette mistakes, we talked to Ken and other hotel workers to find out which polite habits drive them nuts at motels, hotels and all-inclusive resortsand what you should do instead. In case you were wondering, even though there are certain things you wont see in hotels anymore, you should still always follow these guidelines.

Denver International Airport scenes

The dos and don’ts of flying

It seems like every day there’s a new viral video showing passengers getting kicked off airplanes for all types of unruly, rude and sometimes violent behaviors. But one thing remains constant in all these crazy scenes: how polite and calm the flight attendants remain. Seeing these videos may make you feel even more motivated to be a polite and helpful passenger when you fly.

“This is a great instinct, and we definitely appreciate it when passengers go out of their way to be helpful usually,” says Tania M., a flight attendant with nearly 20 years of experience. After all, like most people who work with the public, flight attendants love when you are considerate, follow proper etiquetteand skip the annoying comments.Bonus points if you know what to do on a flight. In fact, these are some of the first thingsflight attendants notice about you.

So where do things go awry? When passengers good intentions to help end up making a flight attendants job harder. This can happen when passengers don’t understand the protocols the cabin crew must follow on board, or because theyre looking at things from the wrong perspective. If youre wondering whether youve ever accidentally crossed the line, youre about to find out. We went straight to the source and asked flight attendants which seemingly polite habits actually drive them nutsand what truly helpful passengers should do instead.

Alabama

State fairs originated in the 1800s as a sort of trade show for local farmers. Over the decades, they’ve evolved into great big, boisterous grassroots celebrations highlighting each state’s unique culture, traditions, and quirks. Inevitably, those quirks involve wonderfully greasy food as well as amusement park rides, carnival games, arts and crafts shows, auto- and motorcycle racing, and large scale musical concerts. Still, scratch the surface of any state fair, and you’ll find the heart and soul of the state. That’s certainly the case with Alabama’s National Fair, as you’ll realize as soon as you click on its home page. (Hint: Turn down the volume on your device before loading.)

Taking place annually since 1954, Alabama’s National Fair features a big-top circus, pig racing, and more than 60 carnival midway rides and games. It’s also one of a handful of state fairs that takes place after the heat of the summer dies down, and as such is quite laid-back. The 2018 fair will take place September 28 through October 8 in the city of Montgomery. And let’s not forget to mention the food, which is quite remarkable, featuring all the usual deep-fried suspects, as well as some others you’ve only ever imagined (or not!). If you’ve never chowed down on a pork-chop on a stick, then don’t miss Charlie’s Pork-On-A-Stick, and be sure to wash it down with a pia colada that comes in an actual hollowed-out pineapple. These are the healthiest foods you’ll find at state fairs.

The post Flight Attendants Use a Secret Language—Here’s How to Decode It appeared first on Reader's Digest.

Just about every industry has its own secret language, and if you listen carefully enough on your next flight, you might notice a shared vocabulary used by flight attendants. But while you may recognize terms like “galley” and “service,” there are likely quite a few words that are far less familiar.

Flight attendants rely on their special shorthand for effective and clear communication with one another. Don’t understand what they’re talking about? There’s no reason to feel left out! Your flight attendant may not reveal these industry terms, but Bobby Laurie will. He’s a former flight attendant and the current co-host of the travel show The Jet Set, and he has the inside scoop.

We asked him to decode the key terms flight attendants around the world use in the air and on the ground. Keep reading to learn the meanings behind some of their most common code words, and look out for them on your next flight.

Takeoff and landing

Rear View of Air Stewardess Explaining Aeroplane Safety to Passengers

Flight attendants may toss around the following words as they ready the aircraft to launch into the air or land on the ground.

Red-eye

Here’s one you’ve probably heard before, but in case you need a refresher: A red-eye is usually an overnight flight that arrives early in the morning.

“It can be a good option when you don’t want to use a day of precious sightseeing time getting to your vacation destination,” says Laurie. Instead, you can sleep on the plane and start touring as soon as you check in to your hotel.

Pink-eye

Nope, we’re not talking about conjunctivitis here. A pink-eye flight takes off earlier than a red-eye (even if only slightly) but still occurs late at night. The difference: It’s not an overnight flight.

Holding pen

The holding pen is the area surrounding the gate where passengers wait to board, often standing around or milling about.

Runner

A runner is a passenger who is late to the airport or late from a connecting flight and is quite literally running to catch their departing flight.

Spinner

A spinner is a passenger who arrives without a seat assignment and stands in the middle of the aisle, confused and likely spinning to find their seat on the airplane.

Cross-check

A cross-check “refers to one flight attendant or two double-checking that the aircraft doors are armed or disarmed correctly before departure or before opening the door,” Laurie explains.

All call

“Generally, after a cross-check, there’s an all call, where all of the flight attendants get on the internal phone system and verify with each other that the aircraft doors have been correctly armed or disarmed,” Laurie says.

Jump seat

You may have noticed the special seat that flight attendants use at takeoff, landing and any point in the flight when they must be seated. This smaller seat may not be the safest seat on an airplane, but it makes it easy for flight attendants to jump to attention. The seat itself practically jumps into a folded position when the flight attendant stands.

Specials

According to Laurie, the term specials refers “to passengers who require special attention, such as those with mobility issues. But it also includes passengers who may require any sort of extra assistance.”

In flight

Stewardess take water bottle from trolley cart

Just as flight attendants have specific terms for takeoff and landing activities, they have flight code words to use once you’ve reached your cruising altitude.

Privo

Privo is “an all-encompassing term that references the provisioning on the aircraft: for the flight drinks, snacks, meals, etc.,” says Laurie.

U.M.

A U.M. (say each letter, not the filler word um) is an “unaccompanied minor traveling alone who is in the flight crew’s care,” Laurie says.

Blue room

Flight attendants often call the bathroom the “blue room” among themselves. The term is a reference to the blue liquid used in aircraft toilets.

Service

The term service “refers to any time the flight attendants put the beverage and meal carts together to go into the aisle and provide snacks or drinks to the passengers,” Laurie explains.

Galley

The galley is the aircraft’s small kitchen. Here, flight attendants prepare food, snacks and beverages.

Galley queen

This is a slang term for a flight attendant who is particulareven territorialwhen it comes to the galley. The galley queen often prefers others stay out of their space.

Flight attendant life

Smiling Stewardess Poses and Crosses Her Arms While Smiling on airplane in aisle inbetween of airplane seats

Flight attendants don’t leave behind their secret language when the plane lands or they leave the airport. They use certain terms to talk about the flight attendant lifestyle.

RON

“If you’re flying on a late-night flight, during deplaning you might hear the crew asking if this is a RON, or a Remain Overnight,” Laurie says. “They’re asking whether or not the plane is done for the day and spending the night. In other words, it’s not going back out that evening. Sometimes it’s also called a terminator.”

Originator

An originator is “the first flight of the day from an airport,” says Laurie. “Airlines are very interested in making sure the originators depart on time because a delay on that flight would cause every flight that airplane operates for the day to be behind schedule.”

On that note, the best time of day to fly to avoid delays is first thing in the morning.

Turn

“A turn is a flight pairing that the flight attendants work where they depart from a city, fly to another, then go right back to the city they departed from,” Laurie explains. “In context, a Los Angelesbased flight attendant can do a D.C. turn, a San Francisco turn [or] a Seattle turn.”

Pairing or trip

“This refers to the one-, two-, three- or four-day schedule the flight attendant is currently operating,” says Laurie. You may hear a flight attendant talking about their “pairing of flights” or the “trip they’re on.”

Commuter

According to Laurie, a commuter is “a flight attendant who lives in a city other than the city in which they’re based with the airline, such as living in Las Vegas but working flights out of Los Angeles. They would fly to workor ‘commute’ to workbefore flying for work.”

Crash pad

A crash pad is an apartment that a group of flight attendants share. “It’s just a place to crash in between flights,” Laurie says. “It’s usually used by commuters who need a place to sleep between shifts when they don’t live in the same city they work in.”

It makes sense when you consider that commuting flight attendants wouldn’t want to shell out for a motel or hotel on days when their shifts don’t leave enough time to commute home for sleep.

The Real Reason You Should Travel with an Empty Water Bottle https://www.rd.com/article/travel-empty-water-bottle/ https://www.rd.com/article/travel-empty-water-bottle/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2023 19:00:06 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1852598 Always have a water bottle on you when you travel? It can do way more than keep you hydrated. Here's why you need to bring one on your next trip.

The post The Real Reason You Should Travel with an Empty Water Bottle appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
Be honest: When you travel, where do you hide your valuables? In the hotel room safe? While this tends to be a go-to spot for travelers, it may not be the best place to hide your jewelry, passport or other precious items. Instead, travel experts recommend reaching for a reusable water bottle.

Yup, you heard that correctly. After you inspect your hotel room for any hidden dangers, safely hide your valuables in a water bottle. Of course, not all bottles are created equal. So before you book your next hotel stay, learn why you should reconsider using the hotel safe and how to use a water bottle to hide important items.

GetReaders DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel, humor, cleaning, tech and fun facts all week long.

The problem with hotel safes

A hotel safe seems like the (ahem) safe place to store valuables. And admittedly, it’s a smarter option than leaving items strewn about. Still, using the safe is one thing smart travelers never do in a hotel room.

There are ways a thief can gain access to your locked-up goods, such as by using a master key or safe code that can override previous codes and open the safe. Considering this is one of the first places thieves will check for valuables, the existence of a workaround isn’t good news for you.

Why a water bottle is the perfect place to hide your valuables

Resuable Water Bottle Safe Via Merchant

We know what you’re thinking: A water bottle really? We’ll admit to some initial skepticism. But the concept makes a lot more sense when you consider the type of bottle you’ll be using and the fact that it’s a less-obvious storage solution.

Avoid grabbing the Dasani you bought at the airport. If it’s see-through, this won’t work. An opaque, reusable, wide-mouth water bottle works well if you don’t plan to fill it. (You don’t want to soak your valuables!) Even better is a reusable water bottle with a twist-off bottom for hidden storage.

“You’d be amazed at how a simple water bottle can transform into a hidden treasure chest,” says Jaume Ros, a travel expert and founder of New.to travel experiences. “All you need is a bottle with a removable bottom where you can insert your valuables. Then refill it with water to make it seem like just a regular water bottle. This not only disguises your valuables from potential thieves but also ensures you have them within reach, whether you’re on a flight, at the beach or exploring a new city.”

Water bottles made for this specific purpose can really fake someone out. The Diversion Safe Water Bottle serves both as a water bottle and a hidden compartment. Plus, it comes in different colors! If you’re looking for a faux safe, this Fake Water Bottle will get the job done. It looks like a normal plastic water bottle but opens to reveal a secret compartment for stashing important items.

Other ways to keep your valuables safe during travel

While using a water bottle is certainly a sneaky way to hide your valuables while you travel, there are other ways you can hide your items without having to use the hotel safe.

“Although a water bottle is a great hiding place, always remember to diversify the locations of your valuable items,” says Ros. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basketor in this case, your water bottle. This way, if something unfortunate happens, not everything valuable is lost or stolen. Plus, be sure to check the regulations of your airline or destination, as some places may not allow full water bottles through security.”

Looking for another hiding spot? In an interview with Express, a Spanish flight attendant named Joaquin says the inside of a shoe can be a great spot to hide valuables, as can the hollow of a hairbrush handle. (Yes, really!)

Empty travel containers, such as bottles for shampoo, conditioner and lotion, can also work for hiding these items. Bottles that are opaque and have a hotel logo on them will spark even less suspicion.

Last, traveling with a money belt is never a bad idea, especially if you’re wary about leaving your valuables in the hotel room. The belts rest under your clothes, so you can keep your items closebut far out of reach of thieves.

And if you do use that hotel safe? At least put a shoe in it so you won’t accidentally leave your valuables behind.

Away vs. Beis: Which Luggage Brand Is Better? https://www.rd.com/article/away-vs-beis/ https://www.rd.com/article/away-vs-beis/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:48:36 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1849423 Trying to find the perfect luggage for your traveling needs doesn't have to be daunting. This Away vs Beis comparison will make it a breeze.

The post Away vs. Beis: Which Luggage Brand Is Better? appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
Friends, family and even complete strangers on Instagram often ask my advice about choosing the best luggage brands. It just comes with the territory when you spend upwards of 90 days a year exploring the world as a travel writer. Plus, a big part of my job is testing products and giving my honest review. The two brands I get asked about the most? Beis vs Away: the most popular social media darlings these days.

I’ve spent plenty of time moving through airports, cobblestone streets, carpeted hotel hallways, inclement weather and public transportation with my Beis and Away bags, and I love them both for different reasons. I use them both equally often, so read on to see which brand is best for your travel needs, style and budget.

What’s the difference between Beis vs Away?

Both brands are female-founded and specialize in lightweight, hard-shell luggage made of durable polycarbonate. They both favor neutral and subdued colors, with a few brighter hues thrown into the mix. And they both prioritize such features as TSA locks, interior compression straps and 360-degree wheels to help make traveling safer and easier.

Away debuted in 2015 and quickly became known for its signature product, the popular Carry-On bag. This brand is the more luxurious of the two, possibly because it’s been around a bit longer and has a slightly higher price point.

Beis launched a few years later, in late 2018, as the brainchild of actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell. This brand, which has a viral presence on TikTok and is a bit more affordably priced, is best known for its Weekender bagbut has plenty of excellent luggage and accessories too.

All about Away luggage

Img 0091 Away Carry On Courtsy Jill Schildhouse Jvedit

Away luggage is the type of aspirational luggage I dreamt about for several years before finally getting my hands on a bag of my own. Not long after I got the Bigger Carry-On, I also ordered The Medium Flex for my longer trips. I’d seen it for years in airports and Instagram ads and its sleek lines and sophisticated color palette drew me right in. I love how easily the wheels traverse any surface encountered, how lightweight the bag is before adding my contents and how it holds up to all my adventures effortlessly.

Pros

  • Personalize bags and luggage tags with up to three letters (additional fee)
  • Add a USB charger (additional fee)
  • Leather details, including a leather luggage tag
  • 100-day worry-free return policy (unless personalized)
  • Interior compression system
  • Spinner wheels for a smooth ride
  • Hidden laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate
  • Luggage sets designed to nest inside each other for space saving

Cons

  • Must spend at least $100 for free shipping
  • Lacking internal organizational compartments, so I always use packing cubes

All about Beis luggage

Beis Carry On Roller

After seeing what felt like my 100th TikTok video of happy travelers using their Beis Carry-On Roller and The Mini Weekender, I just had to see what all the fuss was about. I was preparing for disappointment, thinking nothing could compare with my Away bagsI was wrong.

I was immediately impressed by the additional features in my Carry-On, including more organizational compartments, a padded handle to help make my grip more comfortable, the retractable bag attach strap for when I don’t want to carry my purse and the weight-limit indicator so I never risk going over the 50-pound max on most airlines.

Pros

  • Expandable for two extra inches of room
  • Weight limit indicator (so you won’t need this portable luggage scale)
  • Retractable bag attach strap holds up to 15 pounds
  • Padded handle for increased comfort
  • Interior compression system
  • Save up to 15% when you build a bundled set
  • Slightly more affordable
  • Spinner wheels for a smooth ride

Cons

  • Must spend at least $150 for free shipping
  • Return products within 45 days, but there’s a $10 handling fee

FAQ

Is Away more expensive than Beis?

Yes, it’s a bit more expensive. When determining if you’re going to purchase Away vs Beis, budget is definitely a consideration to keep in mind. For instance, the Away Bigger Carry-On Suitcase starts at $295, and the similarly sized Carry-On Roller from Beis is $218. When looking at their larger bags, the Beis 26-in Check-In Roller is $308 while the similarly sized Away Medium Flex is $395.

How reliable is Beis vs Away luggage?

In my experience, they are both equally reliable in terms of durability in the shell, handle and wheels. Neither one has ever let me down in terms of the TSA locks, compression straps or zippers. In fact, both brands pass all seven of the signs of a well-made piece of luggage with flying colors.

How long does luggage last?

This answer really depends on how often you travel, how often you check your bag (where it’s more likely to sustain damage) and how you treat it while on the road. Even with my demanding travel schedule, both brands held up well for a couple of years and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. They both show some scuff marks on the shell, which is truly unavoidable in hard-sided luggage.

For added peace of mind about your purchase, know that Away comes with a guaranteed limited lifetime warranty that covers any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage. Beis also offers a limited warranty that covers issues with the shell, wheels, handles, zippers or rips/tears in the fabric beyond normal wear and tear.

The bottom line

I can say, without hesitation, that you can’t go wrong with either brand. Both are durable, chic and on-trend. When deciding between Beis vs Away, let each bag’s features, colorways and price tag be the guide to the perfect selection.

If you prefer more bells and whistles, Beis bags offer a few extra features that come in awfully handy at a lower cost. And if you’re in the market for simple sophistication with personalized details and smart features, Away is the stand-out choice.

Beis vs Monos: Two Game-Changing Luggage Brands, But Which Is Worth the Splurge? https://www.rd.com/article/beis-vs-monos/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:12:43 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1850993 When it comes to Beis vs Monos, it's hard to find a clear cut winner. Here are some of the pros and cons of each for your next trip.

The post Beis vs Monos: Two Game-Changing Luggage Brands, But Which Is Worth the Splurge? appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
Beis Vs Mono bag

Picking the right luggage is almost as difficult (and critical) as picking the right hotel on vacation. What size do you need? What’s the budget? How long is the trip? Travel accessories make any trip go a little smoother. But when it comes to the most popular luggage brands, which is the right choice? Here’s the rundown on Beis vs Monos luggage.

Monos and Beis may not be heritage brands like Samsonite or Rimowa, but both carry a wide variety of bags, suitcases and accessories. Although they offer very similar products, there are some key differences.

Beis vs Monos: What’s the difference?

In a nutshell, Monos is slightly more expensive and understated, as opposed to the trendy Beis pieces. Both have all the essentials from carry-ons to luggage sets. But the final decision might come down to budget and personal style.

Beis is very deliberate with the features and marketing of its luggage. Key lanyards, built-in weight indicators and secret compartments are just some of the amenities offered. The soft bags flaunt canvas and vegan leather, while the rolling luggage opts for a polycarbonate hard shell. Theres also a much wider range of bright colors for the Beis bags, targeting people who love to travel in bold style.

Monos, on the other hand, answers to a more refined traveler. Its bags and suitcases are minimal, chic and maybe a bit more durable. Colors mostly stay in a neutral palette, but there’s a choice of nylon, vegan leather and polycarbonate hard shell for the luggage. Monos is also a climate-neutral brand and contributes 1% of revenue to fighting climate change.

All about Beis

Beis Weekend Bag On Suitcase Andrea Carrillo Jvedit

Beis was founded by actress Shay Mitchell in 2018. You mightve seen it pop up on your social media feed or in the airport. Its trendy but for good reason. Each piece prioritizes functionality and style. Unique features are strategically placed around the luggage, solving some of the most frustrating packing mistakes.

Luggage options

Whether youre going on a weekend getaway or an international adventure, Beis has lots of cute luggage options. Polycarbonate suitcases protect belongings and users love the built-in weight indicators and zippered pockets. Weekend warriors and commuters appreciate the portability of the Weekender bags and work totes.

Accessories range from packing cubes and makeup bags to toiletry bags and water bottle slings. It even sells luggage for kids. There are arguably more options than Monos, and the children’s, pets’ and babies’ departments are a bonus.

Special features

Beis is extremely functional. Depending on the piece, some of the luggage has built-in weight indicators, TSA locks, compression pads and all kinds of separate pouches. The totes, diaper bags and Weekenders also have lots of hidden features like key lanyards, hidden pockets and straps.

One of its best and most notable features is the extra storage compartments throughout the Weekenders, toiletry bags and accessory bags. I recently took my Mini Weekender on an international trip and was surprised by how many items fit inside (yes, it counts as a personal item!). Just be mindful that canvas scuffs easily and carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder can strain your neck and back.

Shipping, returns policy and warranty

Beis does a good job of packaging and shipping. The packaging does have a big “Beis” sticker, so beware of porch pirates. Rolling luggage comes with a lifetime warranty if a zipper breaks or the shell cracks. There are 45 days to return or exchange an item if youre not loving it. Theres also a $10 handling fee for returns, but exchanges are free.

All about Monos

Monos is everything frequent travelers want in a sleek luggage brand. The sustainable bags look and feel luxurious, but many users are shocked at the price. Its affordable luxury without compromising quality. In fact, each piece undergoes a rigorous testing process. For every bump in the road, reviewers say Monos handles it all.

Luggage options

If you’re looking for carry-on bags and checked luggage, Monos has a series of models. Even though theyre made of aerospace-grade polycarbonate, the rolling suitcases are extremely light, leaving more room for clothes and souvenirs. For something more versatile, try weekender bags, duffels, backpacks and more travel accessories to complete pre- and post-flight packing. There may be fewer options, but Monos covers the basics and covers them well.

Special features

Compression pads and straps in the rolling suitcases make sure everythings tight and locked in. Just pick between hard vs soft luggage. The handles are durable and light, and all the suitcases include a laundry bag, two shoe bags and a vegan leather luggage tag. Toiletry bags, suitcases and even a belt bag sport the same, no-frills look.

I was impressed by the caliber of construction, lifetime warranty and careful attention to detail, writes Senior Shopping Editor Caroline Lubinsky in her carry-on review. I own the Metro Weekender and have to agree: Monos takes care of every detail. The fabric feels soft, durable and extremely luxurious.

Shipping, returns policies and warranty

Shipping is quick and I appreciated that my Metro Weekender arrived with a complimentary dustbag. A lifetime warranty covers all damage except cosmetic wear and tear, regardless of whether it was bought from Monos or a third-party retailer. To return a Monos bag, send the unused item with the original packaging intact. You have 100 days to make a return too.

The bottom line

Beis Vs Mono bag

There are so many luggage brands to choose from. We get it. But when it comes to Monos vs Beis, both are options with a lot of strengths. The price point on both is comparable and even more affordable than other brands, and the features are travel lifesavers. From extra storage space to helpful add-ons, it’s tough to choose between the two.

For those who prefer to stay on trend, accessorize in bright colors and have an everyday bag, Beis may be the better option. Travelers who want to invest in solid, sleek and performance-forward luggage will appreciate the quality of Monos. At the end of the day, it might not be a battle between Beis vs Monos at all. If you can’t choose between the two, who says you can’t mix and match?

According to the consumer research company Statista, more than 10 million Americans made the trek to France, Italy, Spain and Germany in 2019 alone. But if you want to travel there after January 2024, you’ll have to register and pay a fee. It’s all thanks to the newly launched European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

The European Union’s new system will add an extra step to your travel requirements for 30 European countries. But though it sounds complicated, the process won’t be difficult. And we’ve got everything you need to know before you book your next European vacay.

GetReaders DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel, humor, cleaning, tech and fun facts all week long.

What is ETIAS?

There’s no such thing as an ETIAS visa, and the system isn’t a digital nomad visa either. So what is it, then? According to the official website, ETIAS is the “new travel permit for Americans and other visa-exempt non-EU citizens visiting European destinations.” It’s an electronic travel authorization for visa-free countries, and it has a faster application and processing time than a visa.

In other words, U.S. citizens won’t need a visa to continue traveling to Europebut they must apply for ETIAS.

If you meet the ETIAS requirements, you won’t need a visa if you’re traveling for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for business, short-term study or tourism. If you currently hold a passport or will soon apply for a passport from one of 59 travel-visa-free countries and are between the ages of 18 and 70, you will need the new travel authorization for European travel within the Schengen area (a travel zone made up of 27 European countries).

Why are these European requirements changing?

Rear view of a man looking at Amsterdam canal on a sunny day, Netherlands

The European Union is changing its requirements to include ETIAS to benefit both travelers and the European Union. When traveling overseas to Europe using ETIAS, you’ll benefit from a more streamlined border crossingthe new travel authorization will get you through faster.

But the launch of the electronic authorization system aims to keep the European Union safer too. Better border management means officials can keep an eye on security issues at the borders. And because ETIAS links to security databases, it’ll be easier to fight terrorism and criminal activity.

When will ETIAS go into effect?

The current launch date for ETIAS in Europe is sometime in January 2024. But that comes after some delays. The European Union initially intended ETIAS to go into effect in January 2021 but later postponed the kickoff to 2023. The quiet pushback of the launch date, following a series of hiccups, has led up to its slated release in 2024, but some sources note that it may take a while for it to go into effect.

Per the ETIAS website, “after the initial launch, there may be a short period of three to six months where ETIAS may not be mandatory for travel. This is to allow the EU to work through any system issues, which may negatively impact travelers due to complications with the initial rollout.” Additionally, the site notes that this is “barring any delay in implementation,” so it’s unclear whether the 2024 launch date is set in stone.

Still, if you’re planning a romantic European vacation and want to skip the new system, you’ll have to travel soon.

What countries will require authorization?

Europe Map With Yellow Push Pins in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland

Gearing up for some European country-hopping? These 23 European countries in the Schengen area will require ETIAS authorization from American travelers:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden

You will also need ETIAS for four non-EU member states:

  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Norway
  • Switzerland

Additionally, these non-Schengen EU states will require ETIAS:

Close up of american visa label in passport.

  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Romania

Finally, these microstates will also require the new travel authorization:

  • Monaco
  • San Marino
  • Vatican City

What’s the difference between ETIAS and EES?

The European Union is launching not only ETIAS but also a border-management strategy called the Entry/Exist System (EES). The first thing to know: ETIAS and EES are not the same thing.

For starters, ETIAS is a new entry requirement, while EES is a registration. When traveling visa free, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS travel authorization, but you won’t need to take any action before your trip for EES registration. Instead, this is done automatically at the external border of any of the 29 European countries using EES, and this registration will take place each time you cross an external border between countries. EES will also replace manual passport stamps.

How much does ETIAS cost?

Different denominations on a gray background. 5, 10, 50 euros and 100 dollar US bills

Luckily, if you’re traveling on a budget, the application fee for ETIAS won’t break the bankit’s less than $10. Travelers will pay $8 for ETIAS (or 7).

How do you apply for ETIAS?

Applying for ETIAS online is a relatively simple process. You’ll fill out the electronic form with personal information, such as your first and last name, nationality, place of birth, address, phone number and email. You’ll also need to include your passport information, your travel plans and your history of travel, and you’ll have to answer security-based questions. From there, you’ll pay the fee and submit your application.

It’s important to avoid scam websites pretending to be ETIAS. Make sure you apply on the official site using this application.

Overall, the application process should take about 10 minutes, while approval for your travel authorization will take 96 hours or fewer. You’ll know your application has been approved when you receive an official confirmation email.

How long does an ETIAS authorization last?

US passport and Euros on French map

Once you’ve received your ETIAS authorization, it will remain valid for three years from the issue date. You may use it to travel multiple times as long as your travel documents have not expired.

How often do you need to renew/reapply?

You will need to reapply for ETIAS when your previous travel permit has expired, which will happen three years after your application date. If your passport expires sooner, you will need to get a new passport and reapply for ETIAS.

We put it to the test to see what all the hype is about and if it's worth it.

The post Beis Carry-On Review: A Travel Expert Tests the Internet-Loved Bag appeared first on Reader's Digest.

I have a confession: I’m extremely judgmental when it comes to luggage brands, with high expectations for both form and function. I test a lot of luggage as part of my job as a travel writer who spends roughly 90 nights a year on the road. I’m always looking to upgrade my travel style while simultaneously creating more efficiencies with my suitcase choices.

Lately, my Instagram and TikTok feeds have been inundated with influencers and content creators raving about the Beis Carry-On Roller. They all claim it’s the “best bag ever,” and I’ve done little more than roll my eyes at what I perceived to be a knock-off of my beloved Away The Bigger Carry On. But I figured I should at least order it and see first-hand what all the fuss is about.

I fully expected to end up with a laundry list of complaints about its various shortcomings. Turns out, and this is tough for me to admit, this skeptic actually loves it. In fact, it may become my new go-to bag, and this revelation shook me to my core.

What is the Beis Carry-On Roller?

Beis Carry On Roller

Actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell founded Beis in 2018. Her goal was to create stylish and quality luggage that won’t break the bankwell, mission: accomplished. The Carry-On Roller is a sleek-looking bag with a 3D stripe design along its durable polycarbonate casing.

It comes in colors ranging from sherbet hues to neutral tones. The exterior measurements are 15.7 inches wide x 22.8 inches high x 9.8 inches deep (interior: 14.5 x 13.9 x 9.8) and it weighs just 8.36 pounds. The best part? It’s only $218.

The 360-degree wheels navigate uneven or rough surfaces with ease, and the butterfly opening makes it convenient to pack and unpack. Four-point compression straps help squish everything down to maximize the space while numerous zipper pockets work overtime to keep you organized.

And don’t just stop at exploring this carry-on bag, because everything from Beis is stylish and comfortably priced.

Beis Carry-On Roller features

Beis Carry On Roller

The one feature in this bag that immediately blew me away was the weight limit indicator, which is built into the side handle. If the bag weighs over 50 pounds, it will turn red.

Another brilliant feature is the retractable bag attach strap, something none of my other luggage pieces have. You’ll no longer have to worry about balancing a second bag perfectly on top of this Carry-On Roller and waiting for it to fall off at the most inopportune time. Attach any bag up to 15 pounds to this strap and move about your travels in complete confidence that it’ll stay put.

Sick of luggage handles that hurt your hand? Me too. This one is cushioned with a little pillow underneath. This makes it comfortable to wheel around so you won’t need to keep adjusting your grip.

Finally, the expandable zippered section makes a huge difference when trying to cram one or two more things into the bag. My golden rule of using an expander is to only use it on the flight home. This ensures that there will be enough room for souvenirs.

How we tested it

Beis Carry On Roller

I visited my parents for four days over the Fourth of July, but I wasn’t sure what to wear. So, I overpacked by a lot. I was able to fit all of this: one pair of jeans, three dresses, two jumpers, one romper, five shirts, one skirt, one pair of shorts, a pair of heeled sandals, a pair of flat sandals, my toiletries bag, makeup bag, travel hair dryer, adapter, a bathing suit and an evening bag (I left space for my undergarments and pajamas, not pictured).

Had I used compression packing cubes and rolled my clothes more carefully, I easily could have squeezed another couple of outfits in. Moreover, I didn’t have to expand the bag to make this all fit. What excited me most about packing in this bag was the various organizational features, something my Away bag is lacking.

One side features two pockets (both zip and one is frosted PVC). The other side features a removable compression flap with a large zippered mesh pocket and a U-shaped zip flap. This gave me so many extra ways to separate my belongings and secure places to store smaller items that may otherwise get lost in the shuffle. I also appreciated the matching bags that came with it. I used one to store a pair of shoes so the soles wouldn’t get anything dirty and the other as a laundry bag.

The bag rolls beautifully, the zippers are flawless and the pale pink color (called Atlas Pink) is the perfect mix of sophisticated and girly. I made use of the four-point compression straps to keep everything secure. After its impressive debut, I’m excited to take it on my upcoming flight to Indiana.

And I think I’m going to need to buy the Atlas Pink Beis Mini Weekender bag to complete my luggage set there’s nothing more chic than a matching luggage set while gliding through an airport.

Pros

  • Priced less than competitors
  • Expandable for two extra inches of room
  • Weight limit indicator
  • 360-degree wheels
  • TSA locks
  • Detachable compression flap with pocket
  • Durable, hard-sided polycarbonate
  • Comes in 9 colors to match any aesthetic
  • Retractable bag attach strap holds up to 15 pounds
  • Limited lifetime warranty included
  • Separate pouches for dirty clothes and shoes
  • Capacity of 49-61 liters
  • Water-resistant zipper tape
  • Save up to 15% when you build a bundle (buy a set)

  • Return or exchange products within 45 days, but there’s a $10 handling fee for returns

FAQ

Beis Carry On Roller

Does the Beis Carry-On Roller fit in overhead bins?

It’s important to double-check the size restrictions of each airline carrier before making any assumptions. However, this bag should fit on most domestic planes. It will not fit on most regional flights (those smaller planes have much smaller overhead bins) and it may not work on international carriers.

Does the Beis Carry-On Roller have a weight limit indicator?

Yes, and it’s built right into the side handle. It will turn red if the luggage clocks in over 50 pounds. That means you won’t have to schlep a separate luggage scale to ensure the bag isn’t too heavy.

What other reviewers had to say

The Beis Carry-On Roller has more than 7,000 reviews on the brand’s website, and they firmly sit at 4.9 stars.

Verified buyer Denise O. says, “I bought it for my daughter. She has already taken it on a trip and fell in love with it. I am now going to buy one for myself.”

Corky B. appreciates every thoughtful detail in the bag’s design. “I love this carry-on. There are so many compartments inside to keep everything nice and neat. It is so easy to maneuver, and you can grip it with your hand without a problem.”

And Samantha T.’s obsession with the Beis Carry-On Roller says it all. “I love my Beis carry-on so much that I told all my friends all about it. They even asked me what my promo code was because they thought I worked for them.”

Product comparison

You’re going to see the Beis Carry-On Roller bag everywhere you look while traveling, but don’t confuse it with the Away Bigger Carry-On, which has a similar vibe thanks to its horizontal stripes and more than 3,300 4.9-star reviews. However, the Away bag costs almost a hundred dollars more and has fewer convenience features (no organizational compartments, no expander, no weight indicator and no retractable bag attach strap). One cool feature of the Away suitcase is that this smart bag has an upgrade option for a USB charger (+$20).

Another noteworthy competitor is the Monos Carry-On Plus, which will cost about $90 more but comes in a wider variety of colors. Monos has 1,300 reviews, maintains a 4.9-star rating, offers a 100-day trial and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Final verdict

Consider me a believer in Beis. Honestly, the Beis Carry-On Roller is one of the best carry-on bags I’ve tested. The fact that this suitcase offers so many useful features for nearly $100 less than its closest competitors is rather mind-boggling.

It’ll certainly meet your needs for 4-5 days, and up to a full week with smart packing techniques. This is the exact reason you’ll see this durable and affordable bag on planes, trains and automobiles throughout your travels. Now that I know the brand’s hype is real, I’ll be adding additional pieces to my collection.

I Use A Wheelchair And These Are The 5 Best Accessible Vacations I've Ever Taken 1

Disabled travel made easier

I grew up in a big vacation family. Every year, my parents would carefully craft an itinerary and whisk me and my sisters away to new and exciting destinations. They truly believed in the importance of seeing the world and exposing our young minds to the transformative power of travel.

Our family vacations took various forms. Sometimes, the focus was on relaxation, with beachside fun and quality family time taking precedence. Other times, our trips were filled with adventure, packed with thrilling experiences and opportunities to immerse ourselves in diverse cultures and traditions. But amid the excitement and anticipation, there was always one crucial aspect that remained at the forefront of our planning process: accessibility. Because let’s face it: Disabled travel is not easy.

As someone living with spinal muscular atrophy, I require an electric wheelchair to navigate. This highly specialized mobility aid is nearly $40,000 and is specifically designed to support the unique contours of my body, maintain the angle that allows me to breathe properly and feature the hypersensitive controls I need to drive independently. Weighing in at more than 400 pounds, this is not a chair that someone can effortlessly lift up a few steps or throw into the back of a pickup truck should a wheelchair-accessible taxi be unavailable. This means that each place I visit must be 100% accessible, as makeshift accessibility measures just won’t cut it.

While this might sound daunting to some, planning to this level of detail becomes second nature over time. I am grateful that it never hindered my parents’ determination to let me explore the world. Their love, resilience and unwavering commitment to finding ways for me to experience extraordinary places instilled in me a profound passion for travel, which I continue to embrace in adulthood. Now, at the age of 25, I consider myself a seasoned traveler and even have my own travel blog dedicated to helping fellow adventure-seekers with disabilities find wheelchair-accessible escapes that ignite their spirits, just as travel has done for me.

So without further ado, here are my top five favorite vacations ever. Disabled travel may seem tricky, but trust me: As a wheelchair user, I can confirm these trips are worth taking.

How to Fly for Free, According to Frequent Travelers https://www.rd.com/article/southwest-companion-pass/ https://www.rd.com/article/southwest-companion-pass/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2023 03:47:09 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1849076 Nope, you’re not dreaming. It is possible to fly for free for an entire year—if you have a Southwest Companion Pass.

The post How to Fly for Free, According to Frequent Travelers appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
David Ocamb and his wife, Dorene, are avid international travelers. But with pandemic travel restrictions still in place for much of 2021 and 2022, they felt it was safer to fly to destinations within the United States and surrounding area. That led them to a tool that saved them thousands of dollars: the Southwest Companion Pass.

It’s a deal that allows two people to fly for the price of one, though if you factor in the couple’s toddler, who, at the time, flew for free in their laps, the family often got three people on planes for the price of one. Their savings climbed as they visited one U.S. destination after another and even took trips to some of Southwest’s Caribbean destinations, including the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

“It was a fantastic tool for us,” Ocamb says. “If it fits your travel style, it is a phenomenal deal absolutely worth pursuing.”

Along with savvy tactics like using a flight price tracker and knowing the best time to book a flight, companion passes are among the tools budget-conscious travelers covet the most. Intrigued? You should be. Read on to find out how to travel for free on Southwest and other airlines.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletterfor more travel, tech, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

What is a companion pass, exactly?

A companion pass is essentially a “buy one, get one free” deal. You purchase an airline ticket for yourself and can add a family or friend as your flying companion to your reservation, free of charge, as long as there’s a seat on the plane. The deals are typically offered as either a high-level reward of airline loyalty or as a perk of carrying an airline-affiliated credit card.

The Southwest Companion Pass is perhaps the most prominent example of such a program in the United States, because it allows qualified members who meet its qualifying benchmarks to use it on an unlimited number of flights. Though other airlines do have variations of the buddy-pass setup, they often take the form of an annual, single-use coupon as part a travel credit card perk. This includes certain Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines credit cardholders. For many of these certificates, though, there are dollar limits on the discount.

Why the Southwest Companion Pass is such a great deal

Southwest Companion Pass Promo

Customers who qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass can save a lot of money. If you fly frequently with a significant other, spouse, child or co-worker, it’s a way for them to fly with you, virtually for free, an unlimited number of times while you have the pass.

Another perk? It’s easy to use. The first step is going into your airline account and designating who your companion is. From there, “it’s absolutely seamless,” Ocamb says. “When you book a ticket, you literally just book the ticket for yourself. It has a button that says ‘add companion’ and you click that button, and you now have your companion’s pass.”

Members just have to pay the nominal taxes and fees, which comes to $5.60, one way, for a domestic flight. (That’s also what you pay in cash when booking a flight using points or miles.) Even after Southwest’s holiday 2022 meltdown, you can see why this airline was rated No. 1 for customer satisfaction.

How much you can save with a Companion Pass

Generally speaking, your savings are virtually unlimited. You can add a Companion Pass flier to cheap fares and expensive fares. That means however much you spend on the first ticket is, essentially, how much you’re saving on the second ticket.

“For us, it saved thousands of dollars, without a doubt,” Ocamb says, noting that having this cost-saving opportunity led him and his wife to book regular weekend trips. “But you have to want to travel a lot for it to be valuable.”

He notes that it can come in handy for business purposes too. His colleague, who owns a small business, regularly uses it to transport an employee, free of charge, to reduce the company’s business expenses.

How to get a Southwest Companion Pass

Now here’s the hard part. Earning the Southwest Companion Pass is the highest level you can reach in the airline’s Rapid Rewards loyalty program, and to qualify, members have to fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 135,000 Companion Pass Qualifying Points in a calendar year. Those points can come from flying Southwest or in a couple of non-travel ways, like spending on Southwest credit cards.

The airline previously awarded one-year Companion Passes as a welcome bonus for members who added certain Southwest credit cards to their wallet. This is how Ocamb and his wife got their pass. The airline has since discontinued this offer, though.

However, having a Southwest credit card makes it a lot easier to reach the Companion Pass qualification benchmark though everyday credit card spending. Just about every dollar you spend on qualifying purchases charged to a Southwest card counts toward the 135,000-point benchmark you have to reach. New card members who reach spending requirements can also earn a one-time bonus (often tens of thousands of points) that can put you nearly halfway to the threshold. Additionally, a number of Southwest’s cards provide an annual 10,000-point “boost” toward your Companion Pass qualifying progress.

Is the Southwest Companion Pass for life?

Sadly, the Southwest Companion Pass doesn’t last forever. Once you qualify for the Companion Pass, you’ll have it for the remainder of that calendar year as well as the next year. So, if you earned the pass in August 2023, you’d have it through the rest of 2023 and 2024. In order to keep it for another year, you’ll have to meet the qualification requirements again.

If you’re looking to save in other ways when traveling (and who isn’t?), here’s what you need to know about hotel rewards programs.

Be aware of Southwest Companion Pass restrictions

There are a few restrictions you need to know about when it comes to Southwest’s Companion Pass. Here are the most important:

  • You have to designate your companion before booking a flight. You’re only allowed to change your companion three times in a calendar year.
  • Once you change your companion, any existing reservations for your previous companion will be canceled.
  • Your companion will not earn Rapid Rewards points or make progress toward A-List elite status when flying with you.
  • Converting points from a partner company, like a rental car company or hotel, into your Rapid Rewards account will not count toward your progress to earn the Companion Pass.

Other airline companion passes worth checking out

Delta Companion Pass

While it’s clear why Southwest’s buddy pass stands out among U.S. airlines, other carriers also offer their own programs. Here’s where to look and what you can expect from them.

Delta Companion Certificates

Delta awards companion certificates once annually to members of its SkyMiles loyalty program with certain airline-affiliated American Express cards. Though terms vary depending on the specific card, the general idea with the Delta companion pass is that you get one each year after renewing your card. This allows a partner to tag along for free on one flight. Some higher-end cards get domestic First Class or extra legroom (Comfort+) certificates, while others are limited to main cabin fares. Most often, these tickets must be used for travel within the 48 contiguous states.

Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

Alaska Airlines also gives companion passes to its Mileage Plan loyalty program members who carry certain airline credit cards. Each year after opening a card, members who reach a minimum spending requirement will receive the pass. It’s good for a round-trip coach ticket valued at up to $122. It’s worth noting, though, that members and their companions eligible for upgrades can still be upgraded when traveling using the Companion Fare.

American Airlines Companion Certificate

Credit card holders with certain American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards through its line of Barclay’s Aviator cards can earn a Companion Certificate annually. This is good for one guest on a ticket valued at $99 for members who meet minimum spending requirements and keep their account open 45 days past their card anniversary date. These certificates can be used for a companion on a domestic flight in the main cabin.

Hawaiian Airlines Companion Discount Codes

Hawaiian Airlines also gives its credit card holders annual discounts for a companion. Certain cardholders can receive a $100 companion discount as well as a 50% companion discountboth for round trips booked in coach.

Advice for using companion passes

If there’s one piece of advice Ocamb would offer to fellow Southwest fliers hoping to get the Companion Pass, it would be to take full advantage of its potential cost savings. “You have to be someone who is going to use it and do a ton of weekend flights,” he says. “My best advice is: Book early, book often. If you think you want to book the flight, book the flight.”

After all, Southwest’s cancellation policy allows all customers to get full trip credit or, for certain fares, a full refund, as long as they cancel at least 10 minutes before departure. (Yes, you read that rightjust 10 minutes before departure.)

“Even if you don’t know whether you have off a weekend, book it anyway,” Ocamb says. “Just book it, and worst thing is you have to cancel.” Ready to start racking up those rewards points? Check out these affordable family vacation ideas around the country and book that first trip.

Finding fabulous but cheap places to travel has required a bit of creativity over the past year, as people try to make up for lost vacations during the pandemic and rising costs have crunched travelers’ budgets. At the start of this summer, hotel prices were up 11%, according to booking app Hopper, and prices for lodging at top vacation destinations were spiking as high as 51%. Ouch!

Lucky for you, a new study has a few ideas on where you can go for sun, fun and savings. Travel site Upgraded Points analyzed the cost of staying in dozens of the nation’s best beach towns and compiled a list of the cheapest (and most expensive) places to visit in 2023. And while you may have never heard of the city that earned the top spot, you may want to do a little research ASAPso you can book a surprisingly affordable weeklong getaway or a quick trip before word gets out.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletter for more travel, tech, humor, cleaning and fun facts all week long.

Which factors determined the best cheap beach towns?

Upgraded Points devised its list of the cheapest beach towns in America by looking at the nightly and weekly cost of Airbnb rentals in some of the nation’s most popular beach hot spotsspecifically, the 75 best beaches as identified by Travel & Leisure and Southern Living. The goal was to find the places where you could get the best ocean view for the least amount of money over the course of a seven-night stay.

Spoiler alert: The Hamptons, Malibu and Key West were among the priciest.

But the study also revealed some great beach destinations that won’t break the bank, starting with an island off Florida’s Gulf Coast.

What is the cheapest beach town in the United States?

Scenic Back Bayou in Cedar Key, Florida

Cedar Key, Florida, is the beach destination with the cheapest beach accommodations, according to the study by Upgraded Points. In this tiny town, located about three miles off the West Coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico (and about an hour southwest of Gainesville), you can expect to pay an average $189 per night for a vacation rental home, or $191 per night for a hotel. For the whole week, average costs ring in around $1,330.

Compare that with the $6,400-plus you’d pay for a week in Montauk, New York, according to the same study. But is it worth it? What, exactly, will you find when you arrive in Cedar Key, and is it truly one of the best beaches in Florida?

What does a vacation in Cedar Key look like?

If you haven’t heard of Cedar Key, Florida, you’re not alone. Described by its chamber of commerce as a “tranquil village” and a “quiet island community,” the municipality has just 800-plus full-time residents and one road into town: Highway 24, which crosses over marshes and waterways on the way out to the island.

In contrast to densely packed beach destinations found up and down much of the nation’s East and West coasts, you won’t find towering hotels and bustling boardwalks here. Instead, you’ll be treated to a community of quaint cottages, single-family homes and waterfront properties, so your best bet will likely be a home rental, though you can also find some options for motels, hotels and camping spots.

Of course, there are a lot more than 800 people in Cedar Key on any given dayparticularly during peak vacation seasons, when thousands of guests stream in to enjoy the beach and so much more. The island is known for its annual festivals centered around seafood, pirates and the arts, not to mention being a prime location for bird watching, nature trails, kayaking and coastal tours.

Looking for a day trip? Responsible, eco-minded tourists can visit Cedar Key Wildlife Refuge, a federally protected haven for wildlife that’s reachable only by water.

Whether you’re visiting one of those beach towns or found another that suits your travel hopes, you can often tailor your booking to your budget.
