Books About Witches

Enchanting books about witches

When I was growing up, I was terrified of witches and anything that evoked spooky autumnal feelings. I stopped trick-or-treating when I was in the third grade, and I refused to watch spooky movies in the fallalthough I did watch Hocus Pocus every year … with my hands covering my eyes at the scariest parts. That all changed when I started reading books about witches. I’ve always been an avid reader, preferring to stick my nose in some of the best books rather than play in a pile of orange-hued leaves. Reading offers so many benefits, and over the years, books have helped me understand the world better and feel more empathy toward otherseven, it turns out, witches.

Reading books about witches in the fall has become a tradition of mine. Luckily, this is something of a trending topic, so it’s easy to find witchy women these days, whether they’re in a cozy romance novel filled with sweet, small-town magic, an atmospheric horror book about witches that are up to no good or a historical nonfiction book about the plight of women accused of witchcraft throughout history.

As fall approaches, I get more excited about pulling up a cozy chair, making a steaming mug of tea and curling up with my cat and a good book. And while you could gobble up a Halloween book this time of year (or return to your favorite Halloween book for kids), I suggest you grab one of these books about witches to get in the spirit.

What are the seven natural wonders of the world?

Riffing on the wonders of the ancient world (more on those below), the Seven Natural Wonders foundation named the seven natural wonders of the world to highlight earth’s most awe-inspiring spots. (The organization got compilation help from CNN when creating the list.) Unlike the ancient wonders, though, these natural wonders still exist, and you can see them in person todaythey’re spread across continents and countries.

The ultimate reason for naming these natural wonders isn’t tourism. It’s the desire to conserve and protect these special places by raising awareness of both their special place in the world and the need for education about the delicate balance of tourism and preservation. The hope is to keep them safe for future generations.

What is the eighth natural wonder of the world?

Unlike the seven natural wonders of the world list, which has been agreed upon by several global organizations and foundations, there is no “official” eighth natural wonder. That doesn’t mean you won’t see many truly worthy natural wonders billed as “the eighth natural wonder,” including Niagara Falls in New York and Canada, Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, Ngorongoro Crater in Kenya and the Pink and White Terraces of New Zealand.

What are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

The concept of the seven wonders is hardly a new one. More than 2,000 years ago, Hellenic travelers and poets in ancient Greece enumerated the world’s seven greatest achievements. Yes, humans have been making “best of” lists for more than two millennia!

These lists date back as far as the fifth century B.C., according to National Geographic, so it might not come as much of a surprise to hear that almost all of them no longer exist, with the exception of one: the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, one of the most breathtaking man-made structures in the world.

These are the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:

  • Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Statue of Zeus
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Temple of Artemis
  • Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
  • Colossus of Rhodes
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria

What are the new seven wonders of the modern world?

In 2001, the New Seven Wonders Foundation created a worldwide poll to name the new seven wonders of the modern world. Mind you, these aren’t “modern” in a 21st-century sense. Some are many hundreds of years old. But you can still visit them, and all are attractions in the modern world.

These are the new seven wonders of the modern world:

  • Machu Picchu (Peru)
  • Chichn Itz (Mexico)
  • Christ the Redeemer (Brazil)
  • Great Wall of China (China)
  • Petra (Jordan)
  • Taj Mahal (India)
  • Colosseum (Italy)

Visit the seven natural wonders of the world

Anyone with a case of wanderlust can visit the seven natural wonders of the world today. I personally have been to two of these incredible places, and I interviewed travelers who’ve visited the other five in person. Their insights underscore the importance of preserving the natural landscape through conservation and education.

Excited to start exploring the world? Read on to find out why these seven spots put the wonder in wonderful.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon - North Rim

Let’s start with the most accessible of the seven natural wonders of the world for anyone based in the United States: Grand Canyon National Park. One of the most popular national parks in the country, with an estimated 5.9 million annual visitors, the Grand Canyon was formed tens of millions of years ago. A series of extraordinary geologic events created deep chasms and massive rock formations, giving it an average depth of 4,000 feet for its entire 277 miles.

“It’s truly awe-inspiring. Because I could drive to the Grand Canyon, I wasn’t quite prepared for how completely breathtaking it was when I arrived,” says Mark Sullivan, a travel writer and editor. “I had driven from Sedona, in the summer, where it was very hot, and the Grand Canyon had trees, shade and a breeze, which made it feel completely different from other spots in the Southwest.”

Something about the way it’s situated makes it seem endless, adds Sullivan, who also told me that he was amazed by how quickly the scenery changed when doing even a short hike around the popular South Rim. “Every time I looked up, there was another view that was unlike anything I had ever seen,” he says. “I was completely captivated.”

Plan a visit: Summer is the busiest time at the Grand Canyon, and July and August are also the hottest months. Try visiting in the shoulder seasonlate spring and early fallwhen you’ll have temperate weather and fewer crowds. For a glamping experience under the stars (don’t worry, there are four-poster beds, indoor plumbing and wood-pellet stoves, so you won’t exactly be roughing it), head just 25 minutes from the South Rim to the luxury tents of Under Canvas Grand Canyon.

Plan a Visit

Northern Lights

Beautiful Northern Lights aurora borealis borealisgreen Norway nature

Unlike the wonders that are located in a single destination, the aurora borealis (aka the Northern Lights) is a phenomenon that occurs in multiple destinations above the Arctic Circle and occasionally even in spots across the Northern United States. It’s a technicolor light show that definitely creates an argument for winter travel.

I saw the dazzling aurora borealis on a trip up the coast of Norway in February. Yes, it was cold. Very, very cold. And the first time I spotted the lights, just to the north of the Arctic Circle, they were a faint green ghost in the distant sky, not the light show I had imagined. But several days later, farther north and many miles above the Arctic Circle, on the completely frozen Lofoten Islands, snowmobiling in the pitch black and worrying about my contacts freezing to my eyes (did I mention it was cold?), I had a completely different experience.

Everyone in my group turned off their motors and their lights. There was complete darkness, and then I looked up to see dancing helixes of purple and green looping through the cosmos. The inky sky was filled with galaxies of stars, and the entire sky seemed to bend. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And yes, while the glowing Northern Lights ribboned around the velvet darkness, I forgot about how cold I was.

Plan a visit: If you want to see the Northern Lights, you have options: Visit Alaska, Finland, Canada, Iceland or other northern countries. I had an awe-inspiring view of them in Norway, and I’d recommend the trip to anyone.

The northernmost point of Europe, right on the border of Russia, is really, really cold in winter (like 16 degrees in the sun). But it has to be cold for the Snowhotel Kirkenes to welcome visitors to its ice-sculpted rooms. I’ve stayed here, and I didn’t love spending the night on ice. Instead, choose to stay in one of the property’s cozy glass-roofed Gamme Cabins, where you can spot the ethereal vision of the aurora borealis from your bed.

Plan a Visit

Mount Everest

Evening view of Ama Dablam

Towering at 29,000 feet above Tibet, Mount Everest (locally known as Chomolungma, which means “the goddess mother of the world” in Tibetan) is the pinnacle, quite literally, for many mountain climbers and adventure travelers. It’s also dangerous and often fraught with inexperienced climbers who have made a “mess at the top of the world,” according to some sources. But the scenery is beyond compare, even from base camp.

“After many dusty hours in a jeep passing through remote Tibetan villages and over several high passes, we finally arrived at Rongbuk monastery,” recalls Nick Fulford, who has spent the past 20 years leading tour groups around the world. “The views along the way of the Himalayas stretching into the distance have been tantalizing, but now, at the head of the valley, bathed in soft evening sunshine, is what we’ve been waiting for: Chomolungma in all her glory.”

After dismounting at base camp, Fulford walked very slowly up to a viewpoint, breathing heavily in the thin air. “At 5,100 meters, we stop and stare at this stunning mountain as the colors of the setting sun change the mood constantly,” he says. “Not far from here, we were surprised to see a small hill in the moraine, which acts as a memorial for lost climbers. These include legendary explorers such as Mallory and Irvine but also climbers from the current season who made the ultimate sacrifice in order to fulfill their adventurous spirit.”

As Fulford notes, the peak isn’t on everyone’s bucket list, and that’s OK. Just seeing the immensity of the mountain in person is enough. “For me, this was as close as I wished to be to this iconic mountain. This was my summit,” he says. “I feel privileged to have had this moment to enjoy the raw natural beauty whilst appreciating the dangers of such a harsh environment.”

Plan a visit: Climbing Everest is a major undertaking, one that not only takes a great deal of physical stamina and training but also costs anywhere from $10,000 and (way) more to reach the summit with the necessary guides, gear and oxygen. Visiting base camp is less of an undertaking but still requires advanced planning and physical agility. In other words, this isn’t a trip to take lightly. But if you think you’re up for it, there are numerous multiday treks and tours, most of which depart from Kathmandu.

Paricutin Volcano

Paricutin Volcano

As the youngest volcano on earth, Paricutin fascinated scientists back in 1943 as they witnessed the birth of a volcano for the first time in this century. This lesser-known of the seven natural wonders of the world is hard to reach and rarely visited by travelers, but it offers an intriguing visit for intrepid explorers willing to venture off the tourist trail in Mexico.

“A visit to this volcano requires a grueling hike or an uncomfortable horse ride from a nearby Purpecha community, and as volcanoes go, it is perhaps a little underwhelming,” says Louise France, a Welsh mountain leader and snowboard instructor who has visited Paricutin several times. “It’s not a particularly large volcano, and there’s no magma to be seen in the depths of the crater. But what makes this site special for me and for many locals lies nestled amongst the lava field at the base of the volcano.”

During its eruption, lava destroyed two nearby towns, leaving a single structure standing: the church of San Juan Parangaricutiro. “From a distance, the church spire can be seen standing incredulously amongst the blackened lava field,” she says. “The seemingly miraculous nature of the building’s survival has resulted in the church becoming a major pilgrimage site.”

She didn’t know that before her first visit, though. Only after arriving did she learn just how important the church is. “Mexicans had traveled far and wide to see this holy site,” she recounts. “I was also very aware that this was not a destination for most Westerners traveling to Mexico, with little to no English being spoken. I felt truly off the beaten path. I was lucky enough to visit Paricutin several times, and I always enjoyed making the exploration to both the church and the volcano itself.”

The short scramble to the crater summit wasn’t too strenuous, she told me, adding that running down the volcano elicited peels of laughter.

Plan a visit: Paricutin is not an easy site to reach, and there is no modern tourism infrastructure in place. While this is wonderful from a preservation perspective, it makes a trip here difficult to plan. The closest international airport is Morelia, a 2.5-hour drive. And as France mentions, there are no roads here, so you’ll need to hire a tour guide and hike or horseback ride to the site.

Victoria Falls

Aerial view of famous Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia

Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “Smoke That Thunders” in the local Lozi language, these massive waterfalls are a sight to behold, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit them three times now over the past two decades. More than twice the height of Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls in southeastern Africa (one of the places I most love to visit) straddles the Zambezi River running between Zimbabwe and Zambia and measures in at a whopping 355 feet tall and more than 5,500 feet wide.

I’ve been able to visit in different seasonsspring, summer and winter. I’ve experienced everything from visiting an island in the middle of the river during the December “dry” season (I had a romantic lunch with my husband while hippos wallowed around us and the falls plunged into the river just upstream) to getting drenched with my daughter when the falls were at their pounding apex in June. All of it was spectacular, not just because Victoria Falls is so epically proportioned but also because of the natural world bordering it.

On a small, motorized boat on my June trip, we watched tiny, colorful birds called bee-eaters dash in and out of the muddy river walls as they built nests. After, I joined a ranger for a hike into an adjacent national park, where I watched some of the remaining white rhinos in Zambia peacefully nibble high grass.

On a May trip, a helicopter “flip” (as flights over the falls are terrifyingly called) showed me how vast the watery wonder is, including the secluded natural pool where intrepid visitors can take a dip. On foot, on the wettest visit, droplets drenched my clothes while rainbows filled the misty air, truly giving the waterfalls a magical glow. I can’t wait to return again to see more wonders of Africa’s beautiful “smoking” falls.

Plan a visit: It’s easy to fly into Livingstone International Airport on the Zambian side of the falls, where you’ll be able to reach the majority of lodges and activities offered here. My favorite spot to stay at Victoria Falls is also the property with the best location, the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara.

The luxury property perches right on the Zambezi River, with a cocktail bar set on a deck with views of the mist from the falls on one side and resident gentle zebras resting on the green lawn on the other. Being able to follow an easy walking path to arrive at Victoria Falls from the hotel in just a few minutes may make this the easiest of the seven natural wonders of the world to visit (after you fly to Africa, that is).

Great Barrier Reef

Australia. Whitsundays. Great Barrier Reef. Aerial View

This 1,429-mile ecosystem is the largest living thing on the planet and a stunning deep-sea sight. It’s so enormous, astronauts could even see it from outer space. This natural wonder wows with its dazzling array of fish, mollusks, dolphins, sharks and turtles.

Intrepid traveler and AwardWallet editor Ryan Smith visited the storied reef for a honeymoon getaway. “It’s one of the world’s most interesting places, and I’ll never forget scuba diving here on my honeymoon,” he says. “We saw countless fish, beautiful coral and even an octopus that quickly buried itself in the sand to hide. Many people dream of visiting this place, and seeing it up close made it even more magical.”

For other honeymooners, a romantic spot worth seeking out is located in the Great Barrier Reef of the Whitsundays in Australia: The Heart Reef is 55 feet in diameter and one of nature’s best mysteries. The coral formed into the shape of a heart by itself over time and was discovered in 1975 by a pilot. By air is still the best way to visitthe only way to see the heart shape is by plane or helicopter. (It isn’t a surprise that a lot of those flights turn into in-air proposals!)

Plan a visit: You can’t go wrong with a stay at the InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, which is positioned right at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Surrounded by verdant cliffs, white-sand beaches and celestial-blue sea, the resort’s 182 rooms, suites and villas will immerse you in the spectacular scenery of the area and give you easy access to explore the watery wonders here.

Harbor of Rio de Janeiro

Sugarloaf Mountain

Almost 5,400 people per square kilometer are packed into urban Rio de Janeiro, the storied city on Brazil’s golden coast, making it one of the most populated places on earth. It’s also one of the most popular travel destinations in South America, due in no small part to its breathtaking harbor, also known as Guanabara Bay. The turquoise bay is surrounded by a stunning beach and framed by granite monolith mountains, including iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statue stands watching the entire city. Just past the harbor, numerous islands dot the water.

“While the beaches might be your first thought [when you picture Rio], my fondest memories of the harbor come from above,” says Smith, who has visited the area multiple times. “The Mirante Dona Marta, or Dona Marta Lookout Point, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood offers spectacular views of the whole harbor, plus Christ the Redeemer. From this height, you can see everything, and that view is what comes to mind when I think of Rio de Janeiro.”

Plan a visit: The Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort sits directly on the beach and offers a tropical resort setting in busy Rio. You’ll have direct access to the sand and surf, plus access to a large pool, landscaped gardens and a range of restaurants and spa experiences to truly make you feel like you’re in a beach oasis.

The post The 12 Chinese Astrology Signs and What They Mean for You appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
For more than 2,000 years, the Chinese zodiac has played an integral role in Chinese culture. You may have heard that 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, but if youre not familiar with Chinese traditions, you might not understand the significance ofChinese New Yearand the Chinese zodiac system. While Western astrology is detailed, Chinese astrology is even more complex and nuanced, incorporating not just the 12 Chinese astrology signs but also the five Chinese zodiac elementsearth, metal, water, wood and fireand yin and yang energy. But let’s begin with the basics: What are the 12 Chinese astrology signs, how did they come to be, and what do they mean for your personality? And if you’re looking to learn more than just your animal sign, read up on the Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year foodand Chinese New Year traditions.

What is the Chinese zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac, also known as Shengxiao (“born resembling”), is a repeating cycle of 12 years, and each year is represented by a different animal. In order, the 12 animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The order of the Chinese astrology signs is related to the most commonly accepted legend of the Chinese zodiac: the Jade Emperor’s Race. As the story goes, the Chinese emperor held a race to determine which lucky animals would have the honor of being added to the calendar. The first-place winnerwho ended up being the ratwould claim the first year of the 12-year cycle, and so on.

What is my Chinese astrology sign, and what does it mean?

Juleen (Zhuqing) Wang, Student Services Advisor for Montclair State University’s School of Business, grew up in Hangzhou, China. She loves to share Chinese culture and history with her students, and she also sometimes teaches Chinese language classes. As a native of China, she and her family always clung to the superstition of the Chinese zodiac. “Nowadays,” she says, “[fewer] people care about it, but it’s still in people’s minds.” For example, zodiac traits and compatibility are often cited as reasons for why two people don’t get along. (“They’re a Tiger and an Oxof course they’re fighting!”)

While that may sound a lot like Western astrology, Wang notes that the very natures of Western and Eastern astrology are inherently different. “In Western astrology, horoscopes change,” she explains. “Chinese astrology is pretty set in stone.” Unlike Western astrology, which is governed by the constant planetary movements, Chinese astrology is predetermined by birth year; an Ox is an Ox, and that never changes (though the personality of a Water Ox will be somewhat different from a Fire Ox’s). So, what does your animal sign say about you?

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: rabbit

Rabbit

Birth years of the Rabbit: 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011

Next year of the Rabbit: 2023

People born in Rabbit years are described as smart, kind and docile. Rabbits do not get along with Snakes, which Wang knows from personal experience. “My dad was an Ox,” she reminisces. “I’m a daddy’s girl. My mom is a Rabbit and she said I bullied her!” Rabbits are said to get along famously with Dogs, Goats, Monkeys and Pigs.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: dragon

Dragon

Birth years of the Dragon: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012

Next year of the Dragon: 2024

Dragons are incredibly important to Chinese culture, so naturally, the Dragon is a very popular Chinese astrology sign. “Dragon is warmhearted and enthusiastic. The birth rate will actually even increase during that year because everyone wants a Dragon baby,” Wang reveals. “There is such a huge competition when Dragon babies need to go to college, because [they] are facing more competitors.” She also notes that Jack Ma, owner of Alibaba and one of the richest men in China, is a Dragon. Dragons pair best with Roosters, Rats and Monkeys.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Snake

Snake

Birth years of the Snake: 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013

Next year of the Snake: 2025

“We say that Snake is like the mini Dragon, so that is very popular as well,” says Wang. “They’re very curious and wise, but they can also be jealous and greedy. Snake goes really well with Oxand I actually married an Ox!” Dragons and Roosters are optimal matches for a Snake.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Horse

Horse

Birth years of the Horse: 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

Next year of the Horse: 2026

The horse has been one of the most influential animals in all of human history, which is why, Wang says, the Horse “is a leader and very generous as well.” People born in Horse years are also said to be talented and energetic. This Chinese astrology sign matches well with Tigers, Goats and Rabbits.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Goat

Goat

Birth years of the Goat: 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

Next year of the Goat: 2027

Often seen as being followers and not leaders, people born in Goat years are gentle, decent and a little timid. “Goat is actually an animal that a lot of people try to avoid, because Goat always has a hard life,” says Wang, adding that the birth rate tends to decrease in Goat years. If you’re a Goat, you’d be wise to make a match with a Horse, Rabbit or Pig. Even if you’re not the biggest on astrology, these zodiac memes will still probably make you chuckle.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Monkey

Monkey

Birth years of the Monkey: 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

Next year of the Monkey: 2028

Pretty much everyone loves a Monkey, likely because this is the animal most genetically linked to humans. “Monkey has really good social skills and is very humorous,” Wang says. Those two personality traits also make Monkeys playful and even sometimes mischievous. Ox, who is patient, and Rabbit, who is kind, are ideal matches for this sign.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Rooster

Rooster

Birth years of the Rooster: 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

Next year of the Rooster: 2029

One can literally and figuratively set their clock by the Rooster, a sign that’s defined by reliability and consistency. For this reason, Roosters tend to do very well in Ox years. “They are also very brave and very entertaining,” Wang says. Ox and Snake are the best matches for a Rooster. When it comes to compatibility, you may want to cross-reference your zodiacs. According to Western astrology, these are the zodiac signs that should never date each other.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Dog

Dog

Birth years of the Dog: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

Next year of the Dog: 2030

“Dog sign is exactly what you think about dogs,” Wang says of man’s best friend. “Dog is very loyal, playful and selfless.” This sign is also considered practical, much like how the real animal is used for protection or bred by humans for specific purposes. Dog’s best bet for a partner is a Rabbitsomeone who is as kind and loving as they are.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Pig

Pig

Birth years of the Pig: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Next year of the Pig: 2031

“The Pig is loving, happy, direct and persuasive,” says Wang. The Pig may have come in last in the emperor’s race, but this animal sign is no slouch. 2019 was the year of the Earth Pig, which was predicted to bring steadiness, wealth and opportunity. (How was it for you?) Tigers, Rabbits and Goats will make a Pig happy.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Rat

Rat

Birth years of the Rat: 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

Next year of the Rat: 2032

“We normally say Rat is smart, charming and imaginative,” Wang says. “That’s how he got first place.” The Rat secured first place in the emperor’s legendary race by riding on the back of the Ox and jumping off just in time to cross the finish line. This enviable wit is a source of pride for people of this Chinese astrology sign. As it happens, Rat is most compatible with Ox, as well as with Dragon and Monkey.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Ox

Ox

Birth years of the Ox: 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

Next year of the Ox: 2033

Duped by the Rat, the Ox came in second place. “Ox is very determined and generous and patient,” Wang says. “Ox is also considered very hardworking.” Those virtues may have helped people born in Ox years through 2021, the year of the Metal Oxbecause in Chinese astrology, your own year is actually considered unlucky. That’s because being born is said to antagonize a Chinese god of fortune named Tai Sui, earning you his curse. “He’s going to be against you,” Wang explains. “You’re trying to fight that monster.” One way to ward off the evils of your birth year is to wear red, an auspicious color in Chinese culture. Snakes, Rats and Roosters are the best matches for an Ox.

Illustration of animal from the chinese zodiac: Tiger

Tiger

Birth years of the Tiger: 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Next year of the Tiger: 2034

“Tiger is very adventurous,” explains Wang. “[The Chinese] consider people in that year very lucky. The negative side is that Tigers can be kind of dramatic and cocky.” Interestingly, Forbes once did a study of the 400 richest Americans and found a disproportionately large number of them were Tiger babies! Tiger goes well with Dragon, Horse and Pig.

When decorating your home for Halloween, you don’t have to blow your budget. Amanda Everhart, at Harts and Crafts Design, came up with this clever idea using inexpensive dollar-store items for some scream-worthy DIY Halloween decorations that will cost you just a few bucks.

Everhart uses two small laundry baskets to create “cages” for skeletons that she then hangs from her front porch. She found all the items needed at a dollar store, making this a great idea for bargain Halloween decorations.

“I make many of my own decorations for holidays, and friends and family always love them. I always get the questions ‘Did you make that!?’ or ‘How did you do that?'” Everhart told our sister brand Family Handyman. “These baskets are super easy to put together.”

Supplies needed

Simple Halloween Cage Props 1 Https Www.rd.com Wp Content Uploads 2023 08 Simple Halloween Cage Props 1 Courtesy Of Amanda Everhart, Harts And Crafts Design

  • Zip ties or shower curtain rings
  • Two round laundry baskets (if they’re available in black, buy those to save a step later)
  • Fake chain
  • Black and metallic silver spray paint

Making skeleton cage Halloween decorations

For her first step, since the baskets had slightly raised handles, Everhart cut out a spot for the handles on one of the baskets. This is so the two baskets can sit flush with each other. She used the cut basket as the top of the cage so if they are placed in an area that will get rained on, the water can drain out instead of creating a puddle on top of the basket.

“The hardest part is cutting the handles from the baskets, but that step could always be omitted if someone doesn’t feel comfortable cutting them out,” she said.

Next, use a shower curtain ring or zip tie at each end of the chain to attach it to the bottom side of one basket. Everhart also used a couple of extra rings to hold the two baskets together.

While Everhart used skeletons in her cages, you can use any fall or Halloween decor, such as scarecrows, ghosts or witches. Check out a craft store for these types of decorations.

Everhart then spray-painted the baskets and shower curtain rings using a flat black paint (you can skip this step if your baskets and rings are already black). Once that was dry, she went over them with a metallic silver to make the baskets look dirty and aged.

Then, just put everything together and hang it up!

With outdoor celebrations and yummy food, the4th of July,Memorial Dayand other holidays that featurefireworksare definitely something for us humans to get excited about. Our dogs, though? Not so much.Firework displays(whether they’re legal orillegal in your state) can strike fear in the hearts of even the bravest dogs, causing them to scamper off, hide and shakethe moment the first pop goes off. So why are dogs scared of fireworks, and what can you do to comfort your pups when they’re exhibiting this type of behavior? Heres what the experts have to say.

GetReader’s Digest‘sRead Up newsletterfor more pets, humor, cleaning, travel, tech and fun facts all week long.

Why are dogs scared of fireworks?

Obviously, the loud sound is jarring, but dogs dont react that way toallloud noises. So what is it about firecrackers, specifically? From your dogs perspective, theyre not able to reason out where that noise is coming from or why that noise is happening, says Gary Richter, DVM, a veterinarian and the founder of Ultimate Pet Nutrition. To them, loud, unexpected noisesespecially noises that can come from an unknown sourcecan be very disconcerting, as it could mean danger. The booms, cracks and pops trigger your dogs fight-or-flight response, which can present in a number of ways.

While you might think that hearing the same sort of noise over and over again would eventually cause your dog to relax, the opposite can actually happen. Rather than becoming desensitized, a dogs fight-or-flight reaction can be heightened boom after boom, or year after year, notes Kwane Stewart, DVM, a veterinarian based in California. So if it seems like your pups reaction to fireworks gets worse every year, youre probably not imagining things.

What dog breeds are most scared of fireworks?

While it’s tough to narrow down which dog breeds are most scared of fireworks, as there are a number of behavioral and environmental factors to consider, there is some research that sheds light on which dog breeds are more likely to be scared by the booms and bursts of fireworks. A study out of Finland from August 2020, which gathered data about pups from 13,700 dog owners, found that 70% of the dogs were scared of fireworks. Of those dogs, these breeds were the most fearful of fireworks:

  • Cairn terrier
  • Mixed breeds
  • Pembroke Welsh corgi
  • Jack Russell terrier
  • Finnish Lapponian

And the breeds least scared of fireworks were:

  • Labrador retriever
  • German shepherd
  • Miniature poodle
  • Chinese crested
  • Chihuahua

The study also notes other things to consider when talking about dogs and a potential fear of fireworks, including their level of socialization, age, the types of activities they do, if they’re neutered and if they live with fur siblings.

What are some signs your dog is afraid of fireworks?

According to Dr. Stewart, clear or extreme signs your dog is afraid of fireworks include:

  • Whining
  • Barking
  • Howling
  • Shivering
  • Cowering

Other signs include:

  • Hiding
  • Pacing
  • Panting heavily
  • Wanting to be right next to you
  • Not leaving your side
  • Engaging in destructive behavior to cope, such as destroying your belongings
  • Peeing or pooping inside

Its not always clear, however, when dogs are feeling anxious, afraid or stressed out from fireworks. Instead, Dr. Richter explains, they might exhibit more subtle signs, like sitting in a place they dont usually sit, going to a room they dont usually venture into or even hanging out in the corner. He adds that lip licking and frequent yawningcan also be signs of anxiety.

Every dog has a unique reaction to stress, and even though we sometimes brush it off as Oh, hes fine, simply because the signs are not obvious, we need to pay close attention to all cues, Dr. Stewart adds. In short, if your pet is not acting like its normal self during an event like this, its their way of saying something is wrong, and its worth mentioning to your vet. Whether mild or extreme, prolonged exposure to stress is not healthy and can lead to future medical and behavioral problems.

How do you calm down a dog from fireworks?

The best way to keep dogs from experiencing fear or anxiety from fireworks is to minimize how much popping and cracking they can actually hear. Heres what you can do:

  • Head somewhere thats going to be quieter that night, or move to a room in your house thats away from windows and exterior walls.
  • Drown out the sound of fireworks with calming music orwhite noise.
  • Create a space thats safe and cozy. This might mean bringing your dog into a room with their favoritedog bedandtoys, and giving them some yummytreats.
  • Be patient with themeven if theybarkorhowlfor long periods of time and even if they have an accident inside. Giving them love and speaking to them in a calm and reassuring way is the best approach.
  • Dr. Stewart says that a calming vest, such as aThunderShirt, can be beneficial for some dogs experiencing anxiety. The pressure on their body can release natural hormones and endorphins that are calming, he explains.
  • Consider soothing your dog with CBD. CBD has shown positive signs of promoting calm in pets, says Dr. Stewart. I always advise checking with your own veterinarian before using these products, but some that might be particularly helpful this time of year and are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council includeCharlottes Web Pet Calming Chews, which have full-spectrum hemp extract (2.5mg CBD per chew) in an easy-to-administer chicken flavor.

Next, find outif dogs can eat hot dogsbefore you head out to this years 4th of July barbecue.

The Modern Family star talks to Reader’s Digest about navigating life as a dad of two—and the tricks that keep him sane.

Ask Jesse Tyler Ferguson about the biggest adjustment in going from a dad of one child to a dad of two, and he has a highly relatable answer. “You’re so focused on being a parent of one, and when the second comes in or the third or the fourth, if you’re having triplets, my god, the division of attention is so immediate,” theModern Family star tells Reader’s Digest. “It really does ask a lot of everyone involved, including the kid you already have.”

Being a dad may seem like a Herculean feat some days. But Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita, who welcomed son Beckett in 2020 and their second son, Sullivan, in 2022, manage by divvying up everyday duties according to their respective strengths. “Justin’s much better at the calendar and planning things, so all things around school and extracurricular activities, he’s really good about that. I’m really good at meal prep, I’m good at packing lunches, and I’m really good at organizingI love it. Nothing makes me happier than getting a drawer organized.” We’re guessing he also tells his fair share of dad jokes.

Taking a short break from their buzzing two-toddler household, Ferguson and Mikita recently treated themselves to a preFather’s Day beach staycation in Santa Monica, California, arranged through Citi Travel with Booking.com, which offers more than 1.4 million hotels worldwide. Ferguson opened up to Reader’s Digest about the importance of spending some alone time as a couple, which of his Modern Family castmates he turns to for parenting advice and how he thinks his own character, Mitchell, and on-screen husband, Cam, fared at fatherhood.

Reader’s Digest: Why did you decide to take a preFather’s Day trip, just the two of you?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: We’ll probably do something with the kids on the actual day, but it was nice to do something that was just the two of us for the two of us. I think it’s so important to stay connected to your spouse and do things that don’t involve the kids. We have Justin’s mom, who lives close to us and is very helpful when we need to get away.

Reader’s Digest: How did you and Justin spend your staycation?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: You can also book activities through the Citi Travel site, so we booked bikes and took them around Santa Monica and Venice. We went to dinner, and some friends of ours met up with us. You forget what it’s like interacting with adults when you have children. But it was pretty low-key. I’m a big proponent of not overplanning. I think it’s important to overplan with kids, to have things set up, visit attractions and have things to do. When it’s just adults, it’s like, Having time to just read a book for an hour or twoisn’t that great?!

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita

Reader’s Digest: The two of you have an upcoming trip to Greece as well?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: Yes, for our 10th wedding anniversary. We’re very excited about that. We’re going to New York for a little bit before, because we got married in New York, and seeing some theater and some friends.

Reader’s Digest: Who from the Modern Family cast would be most helpful with childcare tips?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: Well, the characters are different from the actual people. For the character, I would probably ask Gloria. She went through a lot of hardshipshe’s resilient, and she has it all figured out. The last person I’d ask would probably be Haley. (Laughs) If we’re talking real people, Julie Bowen is someone I get parenting advice from all the time, mostly because she’s close, and if she needs to come over, she’s available. She’s really great.

Reader’s Digest: What about Mitchell and Cam? Looking back, how do you think they did as parents?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: So many people ask if I got any parenting advice from playing a father for 11 years, and the answer is no. We definitely dealt with universal themes like Ferberizing the babythat was something I definitely was dealing with. I relate to them a lot as new parents, but I don’t necessarily look to them for advice.

I do think they did the best they possibly could with the given circumstances. We left them in the series starting fatherhood again with another baby. I hope whatever alternative universe those characters are living in, they’re having a great time with that.

I’m a Drag Queen—Here’s What Really Happens at a Drag Queen Story Hour https://www.rd.com/article/drag-queen-story-hour/ https://www.rd.com/article/drag-queen-story-hour/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2023 15:48:40 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1840272 Instead of fearing the unknown, learn what drag queen story hour is really all about.

The post I’m a Drag Queen—Here’s What Really Happens at a Drag Queen Story Hour appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
Picture it: a cozy living room with an inviting red armchair, surrounded by stuffed animals, tasteful knickknacks, an antique radio, baskets, flowers, a rainbow umbrella and the soft glow of a leg lamp, like the one from A Christmas Story (which was filmed here in Cleveland). Whimsical music plays as I make my entrance and introduce myself to my guestsa theater full of children and their parents and caregivers. My name is Veranda L’Ni, and this is drag queen story hour.

It’s been 15 years since I first stepped on stage, seven years since I created the drag pride flag (one of more than 30 LGBTQ flags) and three years since I founded the Cleveland chapter of Drag Story Hour, the national nonprofit organization behind year-round literacy events. (Drag performers don’t disappear at the end of Pride Month!) We don’t simply read children’s books: We’re also providing safe spaces for kids and their families to create new memories while experiencing art together. It’s also a chance for kids to see a colorful character come to life in front of them, rather than on a screen.

Like any performer, I love a big crowd. But lately, not everyone who shows up to drag queen story hour is there to enjoy a few stories and some silly dancing. Instead, they come to disrupt our events, making false claims about who we are and what we do. But, as was the case during other moral panics throughout American and LGBTQ history, these baseless theories come from an innate fear of the unknownin this case, what actually goes on at drag queen story hour. Whether you fall into that category, are a staunch LGBTQ ally or are simply curious to find out what the fuss is all about, allow me to be your guide.

GetReader’s DigestsRead Up newsletterfor more current events, humor, cleaning, travel, tech and fun facts all week long.

What is drag queen story hour, exactly?

Though each event is unique, drag queen story hour programs typically consist of one or more drag performers reading picture books, singing songs and doing crafts or other activities with children at public libraries, bookstores, theaters or other venues, with their parents or caregivers also in attendance. Like actors in a play, drag performers dress up and embody a character on stage in order to tell a story. The programs typically last between 45 minutes and an hour, and they’re geared toward children ages 3 through 8, though we have families attend with infants, teenagers and everyone in between. Not every drag queen story hour is affiliated with the Drag Story Hour national nonprofit organization; there are also groups that have started putting on similar programs independently.

The Drag Story Hour organization began in San Francisco in 2015 as Drag Queen Story Hour, but officially dropped the “Queen” in October 2022 to reflect the diversity of the storytellers. Currently, there are more than 30 official Drag Story Hour chapters across the United States, plus a few in Europe and Asia.

What actually happens at drag queen story hour

Drag Queen Story hour stage

My goal was to create a live version of a kid’s TV show, and having the same set (“Veranda’s Living Room”) at each event helps establish that viewing experience for the audience. I kick off each show by welcoming everyone to my living room, then put on my special glittery cat-eye reading glasses and jump right into the first story. Behind me is a large screen where the books are projected, page by page, so the audience can read along. Once we finish the first book, we get up from our seats, stretch and then go into a movement song, like “Simon Says” or the “Hokey Pokey.” After that, I introduce our next storyteller, and the fun starts all over.

Once we’ve read three books, we close out the show and invite the audience to visit Veranda’s Living Room for a photo or two. Before they leave, each family receives a copy of one of the books we read, so they can revisit the story at home. While drag queen story hour was developed for an audience of children, it’s imperative that parents, guardians or other caregivers are in attendance. The program isn’t daycare: It’s an opportunity for adults to share this experience with their little ones and form new memories together.

Despite what you might have heard or read, absolutely nothing about our program is adult-themed. The stories we read aren’t medical textbooks, psychology books or anything contextualizing sexuality. We’re reading children’s books that talk about acceptance and love, and how it’s OK to be angry or happy or sad or like the color pink: books about the experience of being a kid.

Why drag queen story hour matters

I’ve always believed that drag performers have an immediate audience that we can use to share messages of hope, love and inspiration. In fact, having that platform is what has inspired me to continue to do dragespecially when it comes to fundraising efforts for local LGBTQ nonprofit organizations. For me, drag is about more than entertainment: It’s a way to give back to my community.

The goal of Drag Story Hourand my goal as an organizer and a performer at the eventsis to provide a safe space for reading and creativity. In Cleveland, for example, there was a void in our community that the program helped fill: bringing together those who want to share our rich cultural diversity with their family and broaden their minds. Though drag performers are involved, it is, above all else, a literacy program filled with colorful characters and fun songs.

What people get wrong about it

Drag queen story hour isn’t, nor has ever been, about grooming children. Out of all the misinformation circulating about what we do, this one is particularly infuriating, and it stems from people who have never been to one of our programs or researched what they’re really about. This deep-seated fear of the unknown clouds people’s judgment, and it can drive someone to believe the worst.

While there has always been and may always be a disdain for the LGBTQ community in the United States, over the past several years, something has shifted. Rather than keeping their views largely to themselves, more people now feel empowered to externally vocalize their hatred, creating an even sharper divide in the country.

Recently, I’ve been among the drag performers targeted by groups who actively oppose what we do. In addition to significant online vitriol, I’ve received phone calls and even threatening letters. Protesting is now common during our events, but knowing that people are coming directly for you isn’t the type of thing you ever really get used to. Their presence continues to scare meespecially because I never know whether they’re there as a passive threat or intend to get aggressive and physical.

If I didn’t doubt myself, I wouldn’t be human. But I’ve made the decision to push my doubt aside, and strengthened my resolve to continue to be a resource and voice of compassion and acceptance in my community.

Why I love participating in drag queen story hour

I’m always humbled by the families who come up to me after the shows and express their appreciation for the program. The kids are either really shy or super happy, and they want to tell me all about how much they loved the story I read or the colorful outfit I’m wearing. The adults usually lament the lack of a program like this when they were children. But growing up in the era that gave us Sesame Street, The Electric Company and Reading Rainbow, I think we were being told stories of acceptance and belongingjust in a different way.

When it comes to meeting and interacting with a 7-foot-tall drag queen in a brightly colored outfit, kids’ reactions run the gamut from inquisitive to jubilant to being very much unfazed. Some are fascinated by our costumes, our wigs or our makeup. Others are all about the story. And some just want a hug. When I see kids’ faces light up during the story or watch them dance their little hearts out during the songs, I’m witnessing pure joy and happiness that only a child can have, because they are not yet weighed down by the world. I walk away from these moments with a full heart.

After reading a book called Julin Is a Mermaida story about a little boy who loves the mythological creaturea young boy told me how he also really likes mermaids and was going to dress up as one when he got home. I made eye contact with his parent, who told me that they had just ordered him his own mermaid costume. It filled me with joy knowing that this child was allowed to explore and express himself in such a positive way and had the opportunity to experience what he enjoyed. Moments like these, when kids are able to share their thoughts, ideas and creativity, are what make Drag Story Hour an important part of the community. Because that’s what it’s all about: using the power of books and storytelling to make children feel loved, accepted and included.

Veranda L’Ni is the founder and chapter administrator of Drag Story Hour‘s Cleveland chapter. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches naturally, and 7 feet tall in heels, she has been dubbed “Cleveland’s tallest drag queen.”

What Is Jewish American Heritage Month? The post What Is Jewish American Heritage Month? A Proud Jew Explains appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
The Jewish calendar is filled with well-known holidaysmost people have heard of Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah and Passover even if they don’t celebrate them. But every May, Jewish American Heritage Month invites people of all faiths and observance levels to celebrate in a different way. The holiday is all about acknowledging and celebrating the contributions Jewish Americans have made to this country.

“All of this is an antidote to antisemitism,” says Emily August, chief public engagement officer for the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, which organizes the monthly holiday. That’s important, because there’s been an alarming increase in antisemitism in America (cases rose by 36% from 2021 to 2022) and internationally. With that in mind, the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism and the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History partnered on a monthlong campaign using the hashtag #StandUpToJewishHate to raise awareness of and stand up to antisemitism.

But the celebration goes beyond that. Jewish American Heritage Month is a way of inviting people to embrace all things Jewish in the most positive ways possible. It centers on our cuisine and our major contributions to science, law, tech, literature and, yes, the movie industry. “Jewish Heritage Month is about history, culture and knowledge,” says historian Miriam Mora, PhD, director of academic and public programs at the Center for Jewish History.

As for me, I have always been proudly Jewish, if not vocally or visibly Jewish. My faith and observance, though deeply ingrained, were mostly shared with family and friends. But as the child and grandchild of Holocaust survivors in a world tainted by antisemitism, I feel that I must speak up and speak out often about my Jewishness. Where it once felt like a responsibility, it now feels like an honor to share my love and great pride in Judaism. One of my role models in all things Jewish pride, Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism for the U.S. Department of State, mentioned something in a Zoom meeting for female chaplains that stuck with me. She said that no matter where she travels in the world, even throughout the Middle East, she proudly wears her Jewish Star (aka the Magen David or Shield of David) necklace. Inspired by Ambassador Lipstadt, I do too.

When is Jewish American Heritage Month?

Feast Of Purim Celebrated In 1929

Mark your calendar! This holiday is celebrated throughout the month of May each year. It may not have as long a history as some other Jewish holidays, but it’s far from a new celebration. “Jewish American History Month has been celebrated formally since May 2006, following the 2004 events recognizing 350 years of a Jewish presence in America,” says Mora.

While we know that President George W. Bush established the national holiday in 2006, we’re less clear on the significance of the month. No one seems quite sure why May was chosen for the celebration. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that it’s easier to go to events or lectures during the springtime. Or maybe it was related to the Jewish calendarMay is a relatively quiet time of year in terms of traditional holiday observances.

Jewish American Heritage Month is far from the only monthlong celebration of a culture or faith. In fact, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is also celebrated in May. “The United States recognizes several heritage and history months as celebrations of the diversity of the American mosaic,” says Mora.

What is Jewish American Heritage Month?

Fred Astaire and Irving Berlin Playing Instruments

“Jewish Heritage Month acknowledges the distinctive contributions Jewish people have made to this country that welcomed so many of us when we had nowhere else to go,” says actress Mayim Bialik. “This country is where my grandparents arrived with very little in their possession except the hope for something better.”

The Jewish American Heritage Month statement is straightforward: It not only focuses on preserving, celebrating and educating the public about Jewish peoples contributions to broader American culture but also explores how America has shaped the culture and the gratitude of the Jewish community, says August. It plays out in the form of outreach programs, entertainment, food festivals and other events centered on the collective contribution Jews have made to American life.

Our impact on the United States has been far-reaching. It’s estimated that Jews make up only 2.5% of society. But while we’re a small percentage of the population, our contributions have been significant, touching every industry and cultural pursuit.

The Great American Songbook would not exist without Jewish composers Irving Berlin, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Jewish doctor Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine and changed the face of immunology. Computer science and engineering pioneer Harold Abelson is founding director of Creative Commons and the Free Software Foundation, while Sergey Brin co-founded Google.

Photographers Diane Arbus and Richard Avedon changed the way we look at the world. Scarlett Johansson, Lenny Kravitz, Adam Levine, Natasha Lyonne, Lisa Kudrow, Daveed Diggs and countless other entertainers are all Jewish. Bob Dylan (born Robert Zimmerman) changed the face of American folk music, while my fellow Brooklyn homegirl, the late great Ruth Bader Ginsburg, fought for gender equity and became the second female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

So what’s worth celebrating? “Anything that raises the profile of the rich and diverse nature of Jewish American culture is valuable,” says Malka Z. Simkovich, PhD, the Crown-Ryan chair of Jewish studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Why do we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month?

Jonas Salk in his Laboratory

During Jewish American Heritage Month, we get the opportunity to highlight the way in which Jews have changed the country for the better. The holiday is also a way of fighting antisemitic tropes by reframing the narrative.

“Some people use our contributions as a way of fueling antisemitism,” says Max Con, the incoming business development lead for the Israeli Ministry of Economy’s Economic Mission to the East Coast. “The truth is that we have had our hands in a lot of things … in some ways disproportionate to our size. And people are apologetic about it.”

Instead, it should be a great source of pride for everyone. “They should believe they can have an effect on culture and science and history,” Con says. “And being a Jew doesn’t limit us. It can be a driving force to inspire others to mimic that success.”

Bialik agrees. “The Jewish people have added a tremendous amount to our culture in so many fields, and besides the notion that ‘Jews run Hollywood’ or ‘Jews run the banks’neither of which is true!our contributions to many fields are significant and deserving of acknowledgment,” she says. “I am a proud American and a proud member of the Jewish people, and I wish my grandparents were alive to witness this month in all its enthusiasm. Im grateful my sons are able to experience it, especially in a time in our American and global history when being Jewish is a source of conflict and hatred. There is much to celebrate!”

As for me? To be honest, I never thought I needed a month to celebrate my people and history. But in learning more about Jewish American Heritage Month, I see how important it is to commemorate who we are and what we’ve accomplished and contributed. “Jews continue to be the ‘other’ in spite of our more than 350-year presence,” Mora says. “Simply by self-identifying as Jews, Jews make a statement: ‘I am here.'”

Do other countries celebrate Jewish Heritage Month?

The celebration of Jewish heritage isn’t unique to the United States. It’s recognized elsewhere in the world, most notably in Canada. “The Jewish community in Canada, much like in the United States, has a long history of migration, acculturation and contributions to Canadian history and is all too often left out of the broader American Jewish story,” Mora says.

Like their American counterparts, Canadians celebrate this national holiday during the month of May.

How to observe Jewish American Heritage Month

Father and son in yarmulkes sitting in synagogue

Just as every family puts their own spin on holidaysconsider the various Hanukkah traditions and Rosh Hashanah traditionseveryone celebrates Jewish American Heritage Month differently. If you’re looking for some inspiration, I compiled a list to get you started.

Research your own Jewish story

If you’re curious about your heritage, Mora suggests taking steps to “discover your own American migration story.” She notes that the Center for Jewish History is home to the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute and the DNA Reunion Project. You can reach out to the staff, make an in-person appointment or attend an online class. It’s a great option even if you’re not practicing or otherwise involved with your personal Jewish history

Seek out diversity

There is no single country, culture or origin story when it comes to being Jewish. We come from all over the world and every racial designation. Discover Black Jews, Sephardic food and music, or ways to celebrate that are out of your typical comfort zone.

Listen to an older relative’s stories

I’m the child and grandchild of Holocaust survivors, and so many of my family’s stories have been lost permanently. We don’t have medical records, and until earlier this year, I had no remaining photographs of my father as a child. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that personal history is powerful.

Honor your history by visiting a great aunt or other relatives, and really listen to them. You’d be amazed by just how powerful their stories can be.

That’s something neither I nor my family take for granted. My sister Kiki is currently creating a video series of talks with American-based Holocaust survivors about their lives after tragedy. There’s so much emphasis on the suffering these people have faced, but my sister is chronicling the joy and resilience they’ve found in America.

Host a Jewish book club

Religious books, a small part of the Jewish bi millenial bookcase

Gather fellow bookworms to read books that are important to the Jewish population, and don’t just stick to Holocaust books. Read widely! August recommends choosing books by Jewish authors or on Jewish topics.

Connect with modern Judaism

“Sometimes people who are not living in the Jewish community might think about Jews through the lens of history,” says Simkovich. Their minds may turn to the Holocaust, the first century or the Jews of the past. What she asks is that “anyone interested in celebrating this month would make a proactive effort to encounter living Judaism, whether sharing a Shabbat or going to a Jewish neighbor or cultivating a friendship that brings you to the current living Judaism. I think that’s more effective than reading a history book.”

Create your own heritage project

Alan Locher, host of The Locher Room YouTube show, is the child of two Holocaust survivors. But it was only during his late 20s that he started to strongly identify with his Jewish heritage. In 1996, he traveled with his parents to Holland (both of them were born and raised in Amsterdam) to meet the family who hid his mother during World War II.

Still, his heritage didn’t intersect with his work until recently. During the pandemic, Locherwho has a long history of working with daytime and prime-time actorsstarted interviewing people via his YouTube channel to cheer them up. But when he noticed the disturbing increase in antisemitism, he started to focus his interviews on people standing up to hate.

“My belief is that conversations like this can change hearts and minds,” he says. “We all must do everything we can to stop hate in all its forms.” If you think that you have a unique way of combating hate in this country, consider starting your own channel or recording your personal experiences.

Support a Jewish business

Carlos Huber, a fragrance designer and founder of Arquiste, was born in Mexico but currently considers New York his home. Huber describes his upbringing as including a mix of Sephardic heritage (by way of Istanbul and Greece) and Ashkenazi (by way of Poland and Lithuania). He channeled that mix into L’Etrog cologne, which celebrates both his heritage and the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, during which a citron fruit plays a major role.

That’s just one example of the many Jewish-owned businesses in the country. By shopping at one of these stores, you’re putting money in the hands of the community instead of giant corporations.

Enjoy Jewish experiences

Heap of sweet round sabbath challah bread with white and black sesame seeds in vintage metal bowl and on small cutting board over white table with plastered wall at background.

Make a Jewish recipe, go to a Jewish bakery, listen to some Jewish musicwhatever moves you. There are no rules or ideals to the observation of this holiday. It’s just a way to speak up proudly or reclaim a part of yourself that you may have lost.

Take to social media

Whether or not you consider yourself a social media influencer, your posts matter. Talk about Jewish American Heritage Month and the Jewish role models who inspire you most.

What Jewish American Heritage Month means to me

I celebrate every single Jewish holidayand I’m not kidding! I even celebrate the ones no one has ever heard about. So I initially figured I could take a pass at celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month.

But the fact is that culturally, we’re combating a loneliness epidemic and still finding our footing after the pandemic. In addition to being a journalist and author, I’m also a certified chaplain. And that means I’m going to try to find ways to help even unaffiliated or uninterested Jews reclaim some pride in their faith this month, even if it means treating them to some kugel or kokosh cake (a Hungarian chocolate roll loaf). Connecting with others, be they fellow members of the faith or allies, is perhaps the greatest testament to being proudly Jewish.

My late father, David, was a child slave laborer to the Nazis before he was sent to a concentration camp. He was persecuted as a small boy for the crime of being Jewish. I will honor him by finding ways to commemorate my faith this month, and I really hope you’ll join me.

The post Birthdate Candles Are the Best Birthday Gift—and They’re on Sale appeared first on Reader's Digest.

Our birthdate is something we own, so it’s easy to see why folks feel a deep connection to it. Sure, we all share our birthday with at least one other person (and usually several million people), but that doesn’t stop it from being a sentimental date. After all, who doesn’t find it at least a little exciting to sport birthstone or zodiac jewelry? That’s the fun behind Birthdate Candles.

What are Birthdate Candles?

Birthdate Candles

Unlike a birthday cake-scented candleor Zodiac candle, Birthdate Candles are entirely unique to a single date out of the year. Each coconut, apricot and soy wax candle includes a blend of different fragrances. Working with master perfumers, Birthdate Candles craft these bespoke fragrances based on the astrological personality traits associated with each date.

To see some of the available scents, I put my own birthdate into the Birthdate Candle website. The January 7 candle boasts a lofty description: “A sacred woodsy mysticism centers this fragrancewith bottom notes of frankincense, myrrh and eucalyptus. Middle notes of oakmoss and a top scent of sage bring a feel of relaxing escape to the determined, strategic, patient souls born on January 7.”

If eating an entire batch of croissants in one sitting is determination, they have me pegged to a tee. Am I patient? I would say yesbut my mischief-loving cat would probably disagree. Either way, just the knowledge that this candle was carefully created with my special day in mind was enough to make me buy one. I also plan to pick one up as a Mother’s Day gift for my mom and one as a birthday gift for my sister.

Are Birthdate Candles worth it?

If you have a Zodiac-loving friend who relies on astrology readings to find a new hobby or determine their luckiest months, it makes the perfect present. But those who are into astrology aren’t the only ones who will love it. The candle also covers your bases both for boyfriends and as general “thank-you” gifts, so it’s worth it to pick one up if you want to make an impression.

Birthdate Candles recently went viral on TikTok as the perfect birthday gift. Whether you’re shopping for your wife, searching for a clever gift for your boss or simply need to send something to your sister-in-law, this unique gift is a go-to. There are also other finds on the Birthdate Candle website that you can send along with your birthday wishes, including a customized Birthday Book and Tarot Candles.

On TikTok, users like @..luvlyn posted their own birthdate scents. The video garnered over 60,000 views, with many folks inquiring where they can get their own.

These Are the Rarest Birthdays in the United States https://www.rd.com/article/rarest-birthdays/ https://www.rd.com/article/rarest-birthdays/#respond Mon, 20 Mar 2023 15:58:18 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1818116 How popular is your day of birth? Celebrate the rarest birthdays—and the most common!

The post These Are the Rarest Birthdays in the United States appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
Happy birthday to youand you and you! Wait a minute, how many people have the same birthday here? The answer may actually surprise you. According to the “birthday paradox,” in a random group of 23 people, there’s about a 50% chance that at least two people have the same birthday. And that’s the case whether they have one of the rarest birthdays or were born during the most popular birth month. (It’s a math problem with 253 chances for matching birthdays, says the Scientific American.)

So which months have the most birthdaysand better yet, which have the fewest? We’ve got you covered. We have the data on which dates are the most common to celebrate and which are the rarest birthdays, and unlike presents, we’re not afraid to share them. While you may not have the rarest eye color or rarest personality type, having a rare birthday is worth bragging about. So whether you’re a September baby (September babies are more successful, by the way), born during March Madness or anywhere in between, read on to find out where your birthday ranksand what happy birthday messages you can share about it.

What’s the rarest month to be born in?

According to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Social Security Administration (SSA), the rarest month to be born in is February, making Aquarius the rarest zodiac sign. This makes logical sense, since February is the shortest month of the year, even with a leap year. Another factor that makes February a rare birth month: Conception would have happened in May, and when the weather is warmer and days are longer, fewer babies tend to be conceived.

What are the rarest birthdays?

February babies are special, but which dates are actually the rarest birthdays? Surprisingly enough, none of the rarest birthdays fall in February. Instead, many of them coincide with major holidays, such as Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Christmas Evehow’s that for a birthday meme? This is most likely due to the fact that there are fewer inductions and cesarean sections scheduled during the holidays. These are the rarest birthdays in the U.S. and the average number of births on that day each year.
