When you’re in the great outdoors, it’s best to be prepared. Being stuck outside with insufficient heat or unpredictable weather is a pesky problem. And finding camping gear that protects the planet is also a priority for nature lovers. Outdoor must-haves aren’t just tents and fire starters. Campers are also raving about this Rumpl blanket.
The Original Puffy Blanket is a hefty $125, but with all its great features, read on to see why we think it’s worth the investment.
What is a Rumpl blanket?
The Rumpl blanket is a lightweight, compressible blanket that provides lasting warmth to anyone, camper or otherwise. Each of the sustainable blankets is constructed using a 100% post-consumer recycled polyester shell and 100% recycled 3D hollow-fiber, synthetic insulation. Depending on the size (there are junior, one-person or two-person sizes), the blanket uses 16, 60 or 100 recycled plastic bottles, respectively.
A durable water-repellant (or DWR) finish on the shell adds stain and water resistance. The one-person size has a cape clip that adjusts on the chest for hands-free multitasking and corner loops stake the blanket to the ground.
The junior size weighs less than a pound, while the two-person size weighs just under four pounds. But don’t be fooled by its light construction. Almost every reviewer points out that it keeps you warm for hours.
Our Deputy Editor Reina Galhea takes her Original Puffy Blanket to just about any outdoorsy location, not just campgrounds. “I won’t reach for any other blanket when I’m venturing into nature,” she says. She also notes that even the one-person size is large enough for two adults to sit comfortably alongside a cooler full of snacks. Plus, the securable corner loops are well-designed to keep the blanket from flying around on windy days.
Her favorite feature is the DWR fabric. “Nothing makes packing up from an outdoor trip easier than simply lifting your blanket and watching the dirt, liquid and debris slide right off.” She does warn that the fabric can be slippery, especially on an incline, making those corner loops a welcome feature.
How to use a Rumpl blanket
Wrap yourself in this blanket like you would any other blanket. The difference is there’s no shortage of places you can take this sustainable accessory. Campers swear by it, but it’s also perfect for the park, a picnic, a tailgate, an outdoor game or even the couch.
They’re not temperature regulated, but a single-person blanket is ideal for any setting above 45 degrees. Battling a colder day? Opt for a two-person size or layer two blankets.
Keep in mind that the blanket is water-resistant, not completely waterproof, so it probably won’t keep you dry in a downpour. However, its water-repellent properties are great at sliding water right off, as you’ll see in the photo below. Still, Rumpl has a 100-night trial period to test it out for yourself. It also makes for an excellent camping gift.
The Rumpl blanket comes in a carrying pouch that’s perfect for on-the-go or storing in a backpack. Galhea says the Rumpl squishes to the size of a rolled-up towel to fit into the carrying case. She also mentions putting it into the washing machine immediately to get rid of any lingering sand or dirt.
It’s recommended to use a front-loading washing machine on a warm setting and add Grangers detergent to best preserve the DWR fabric. While air drying is preferred, you can also tumble dry on low.
The best user reviews
At $125, it’s not exactly considered discounted camping gear. However, the DWR fabric, sustainable element, easy packing and washing, beautiful prints and ease of use make the Rumpl blanket a must-have for all outdoor enthusiasts. Campers everywhere love their Rumpl blanket for that versatility.
Verified buyer Lesley R. says in her review that she usually needed two blankets while camping until she found the Rumpl. “This is the PERFECT blanket for anyone who gets cold easily,” she writes. “I was skeptical at first because it’s so lightweight and we have tried some knock-off blankets of similar design. But WOW, the Rumpl really keeps you warm! Worth every penny. Love the National Park design, too.”
Another five-star reviewer, Staci B., writes, “Took it camping this weekend and it was amazing in the windy weather to be able to wrap up! Got so many compliments and questions about it from family and friends!”
On a final note, Galhea adds that “the hardest decision you’ll make about this blanket isn’t whether to buy it, it’s which version you like best—the brand features more than 70 colors and patterns, including some original designs from American artists across the country (such as Bob Ross!).”
