Dear
Diary:
August
3, 1991.
Opening
store for first time. Must sober up. Have signing with Gunnar (Leatherface)
Hansen. Wonder if middle name is reference to someone on mother
or father's side. Doesn't matter, we're doomed.
August 4, 1991.
Signing went well. Must sober up. Must get Gunnar out of my house.
September 1992.
Become involved with Toronto Festival of Festivals (film festival).
Hate schmoozing, love free booze. Must sober up. Have signing with
Dario Argento. Great guy but needs tailor. Can't understand a word
he says. Think he's Spanish. Or Irish.
September 1993.
Signing with Peter (Heavenly Creatures) Jackson. Asked him if he
had two sheds. Private joke. Extremely humble but refused to drink.
A-type antisocial misfit. Sweater around shoulders must be kiwi
thing.
September 1994.
Signing with Jorg (Nekromantic) Buttgereit. Overly friendly, hope
he doesn't ask for place to sleep.
October 1994.
Publish 'Suspect Culture' magazine. Took absolutely forever to put
together, good thing I have no life and didn't miss anything. Limited
print run. Sells very well in States. Will never deal with Tower
Records again.
November 1995.
Win Now Magazine's readers' poll for best video store. Hope first
prize is case of Vodka. Take that you smelly chain stores.
April 1996.
Opening second store on Queen street. Hope the food is better down
here. Bar right across street. God does exist.
November 1996.
Win Now Magazine's poll again. Hope vodka comes this time.
September 1997.
Another signing with Dario Argento. This time, brings translator.
Think he likes us. Maybe not.
October 1997.
Quentin Tarantino and Mia Sorvino came into the store, felt weak
in the knees. Wasn't sure if it was because I was in awe or if it
was because he had such a massive head in proportion to his body.
November 1997.
Win Now award for best Alternative Video Store again. Will settle
for quart of Uzo. Runner up for Best Video store, lost to Blockbuster.
Guess millions in advertising really DOES pay off.
November 1998.
Won Now's poll again for Best Alternative Video Store. Beginning
to think prize does not include alcohol. Runner up to Blockbuster
for Best Video Store again. How do they keep their stores so clean
and free of pesky ideas? Must find out.
March 1999.
Won Eye Magazine's award for Best Video Store. Hope first prize
is a case of vodka.
November 1999.
Won Now's Alternative Video Store award again and runner up to the
blue-and-yellow evil down the road. Bet THEY got THEIR wine spritzers.
September 2000.
Launching
website. Still get a kick out of corporate people using the term
'webmaster'. Dungeons and Dragons anyone?
