Aki Kaurismäki's Proletariat Trilogy (Eclipse)

Three-DVD set collects Kaurismäki's Proletariat trilogy. 'Ariel' (1988) / 'The Match Factory Girl' (1990) / 'Shadows in Paradise' (1986).
The poignant, deadpan films of Aki Kaurismäki are pitched somewhere in the wintry nether lands between comedy and tragedy. And rarely in his body of work has the line separating those genres seemed thinner than in what is often identified as his "Proletariat Trilogy," Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, and The Match Factory Girl. In these three films, something like social-realist farces, Kaurismäki surveys the working-class outcasts of his native Finland with detached yet disarming amusement. Featuring commanding, off-key visual compositions and delightfully dour performances, the films in this triptych exemplify the talents of a unique and highly influential film artist.

Shane Ryan himself is the killer, a guy who seems at first nothing more than your standard, 18 year old pervert with a penchant for filming his sexual escapades. What unravels is a story far darker, unsettling, and downright mesmerizing then what originally presents itself in the first few minutes of the story.

KILLER'S MOON (special edition): Redemption USA

The UK's answer to 'I Spit On Your Grave' - only sleazier and with a three-legged dog. Alan Birkinshaw, 1978.

Produced in the late seventies it mixes lurid scenes of rape with Clockwork Orange Droog style menace, drugs and dollops of ultra violence all of which combined make this a true 'video nasty'. Centered on four drugged-up escaped prisoners whose only purpose in life is to 'loot, kill and rape' and who in true exploitation style seek refuge in the nearest girls school Killer's Moon starts off mired in sleaze and stays there.

Full of gratuitous sexual violence, a three-legged dog and some truly repellent dialogue this film is not to be missed. Not released anywhere since the halcyon days of the early 1980s this version has been completely re-mastered from the original negative.

SIMON, KING OF THE WITCHES (special edition): Dark Sky
simon cover
Simon Sinestrari is a warlock. Though he lives in a storm drain and sometimes talks to trees, he's the real deal, no smoke and mirrors. Deadly serious about his craft, he despises falsehoods and misconceptions toward his witchy profession. And as for those who don’t believe...

After being picked up for vagrancy, Simon spends a night in jail with Turk (George Paulsin), a young hustler with connections to powerful people in powerful places. One such character is Hercules (Gerald York), a skeptical philanthropist who hires Simon to work a party of hipsters and the well-to-do, among whom is beautiful Linda (Brenda Scott), the pill-popping daughter of the local district attorney. In-between romantic dalliances and colorful sex-magik ceremonies with Linda, Simon must contend with those who dare to challenge his magical prowess, eventually forcing him to summon dark forces of revenge and murder.

Also starring Warhol Factory regular Ultra Violet as Sarah, and an array of trippy 2001-styled special effects, Simon King Of The Witches is a shining vehicle for Andrew Prine (Grizzly, The Centerfold Girls), who gives a mesmerizing performance as Simon in this hip, funny, and often bizarre countercultural cult classic by director Bruce Kessler (The Gay Deceivers).

VAMPYR (1932; special edition): Criterion
cover
With Vampyr, Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer's brilliance at achieving mesmerizing atmosphere and austere, profoundly unsettling imagery (as in The Passion of Joan of Arc and Day of Wrath) was for once applied to the horror genre. Yet the result—concerning an occult student assailed by various supernatural haunts and local evildoers at an inn outside Paris—is nearly unclassifiable, a host of stunning camera and editing tricks and densely layered sounds creating a mood of dreamlike terror. With its roiling fogs, ominous scythes, and foreboding echoes, Vampyr is one of cinema's great nightmares.

Special Features
- New, restored high-definition digital transfer of the 1998 film restoration by Martin Koerber and the Cineteca di Bologna

- Optional all-new English-text version of the film
- Audio commentary featuring film scholar Tony Rayns
- Carl Th. Dreyer (1966), a documentary by Jörgen Roos chronicling Dreyer's career
- Visual essay by scholar Casper Tybjerg on Dreyer's influences in creating Vampyr
- A 1958 radio broadcast of Dreyer reading an essay about filmmaking
- New and improved English subtitle translation

- PLUS: A booklet featuring new essays by Mark Le Fanu and Kim Newman, Martin Koerber on the restoration, and an archival interview with producer and star Nicolas de Gunzburg, as well as a book featuring Dreyer and Christen Jul's original screenplay and Sheridan Le Fanu 1871 story "Carmilla," a source for the film

This lurid cult classic serves up an enticing brew of horror and perversion that seems to appeal to cult movie fans as well as mainstream viewers in equal measure. It stars the fabulous sisters Ann and Vicki Michelle (from BBC tvs ‘Allo, Allo’ series) as a pair of scantily clad, ‘dolly birds’ who are lured by a sleazy lesbian to a country house inhabited by satanists intent on using the pair in a demonic sacrifice. Virgin Witch is a great example of british exploitation cinema and is not to be missed.

Machine Girl (Media Blasters)
 cover
Japanese splatter about a schoolgirl who outfits herself with a machine-gun arm and a drill-bra while hunting down her brother's killers. Minase Yashiro, Noboru Iguchi, 2007.
"Ami is a tough but otherwise average high school girl, trying to lead a normal life. Her world comes crashing down when her brother and his friend are killed by ruthless bullies. As Ami tracks down the ringleader, she is surprised to discover the bullies' association with a sinister ninja yakuza family. When she goes after her revenge, she soon finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving, Ami escapes and seeks out shelter from two kindly garage mechanics. They take pity on her, fitting her with a high-powered machine gun where her arm used to be. She then teams up with the chainsaw-wielding mother (Asami) of her brother's slain friend and together they unleash an unholy, non-stop, over-the-top kill fest against the equally creative machinery (drill bra, flying guillotine) of their relentless ninja enemies.

When the very idea of THE MACHINE GIRL was introduced to the world, an internet phenomenon was launched. Many believed a film so outrageous couldn't possibly exist. But here it is, in all its uncut, gory glory from the creators of DEATH TRANCE, MEATBALL MACHINE and SUKEBAN BOY. "

Japanese sci-fi/splatter-horror about an invasion that has alien parasites turning their human hosts into mindless 'Necroborgs'. Yudai Yamaguchi, Junichi Yamamoto, 2005.
If you’re craving an experimental science-fiction/horror rollercoaster that will have you feeling like you just had your entire brain and body shaken and stirred, Meatball Machine is exactly the full-strength cinematic potion you need. A feature-length expansion of a short film previously created by co-director Junichi Yamamoto (the other director here is Yudai Yamaguchi, responsible for the comedic cult favorite Battlefield Baseball), Meatball makes the early aggressive cyberpunk endeavors of directors Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo) and Sogo Ishii (Burst City) look like models of restraint and tranquility.

Meatball Machine puts its cinematic foot all the way down on the gas pedal and doesn’t let up.
